Santa Fe Skies RV Park offers 97 year-round sites with full hookups and mountain views, while more rustic options exist in the nearby Santa Fe National Forest where dispersed camping is permitted along BLM Road 62. Camping conditions vary significantly with elevation and season throughout the Santa Fe region. Summer temperatures can exceed 90°F in lower elevations while remaining pleasantly cool in the mountains. Winter brings snow to higher elevations, particularly at Hyde Memorial State Park, where four-wheel drive vehicles become necessary for access. Cell service is notably limited throughout northern New Mexico, with many campers reporting "practically non-existent" coverage that creates what one visitor called "a total digital detox." Fire restrictions are common during dry periods, with several established campgrounds prohibiting open flames entirely. Campers should verify current regulations before arrival and bring adequate water supplies, as some dispersed sites lack potable water.

Visitor experiences highlight the stark beauty of the high desert landscape and mountain vistas. "I fell in love with New Mexico's wilderness many years ago with its sparse dry landscape and sagebrush, and the wide open starry skies at night," noted one camper at the Santa Fe Treehouse Camp. The region's camping areas provide access to numerous hiking trails, with several sites positioned near streams or rivers for fishing opportunities. Wildlife sightings are common, with reviewers mentioning deer, hummingbirds, and chipmunks frequenting campsites. Travelers seeking solitude should consider the more remote forest service roads, while those wanting amenities might prefer established campgrounds like Rancheros de Santa Fe, which offers clean facilities, hot showers, and seasonal amenities including a swimming pool.

    Villanueva State Park Campground

Very nice campground on the Pecos River

The campground was beautiful but the visitor center was closed without any information posted. Our site was right on the river under tall trees with an adobe shelter over the picnic table

    Pajarito Springs (Dispersed)

    Dirt roads on dirt roads

To enter the area you have to pass through a check point where they check your drivers license, I guess because it’s on ā€œlabā€ property. Anyways, once you arrive to the pin, you have the option to go left, where the road is a little rougher, and right, where the road is bumpy but more doable for vans and short campers. I went to the right. There’s so many roads crossing around trees and intersecting with other roads, there’s not much really differentiating a road from a camp site. That being said, just pick a spot anywhere that doesn’t block any main roads. I found a decently level spot and it worked great for the night. My dog loved the openness. A little chilly tonight, absolutely no bugs. Ground is packed dirt covered in pine needles, roads have some ruts and large rocks. There were a few other campers here but we were all spread out away from each other. Couple kids riding mini bikes around but they kept their distance. Quiet at night. Great primitive spot for the night!

    Santa Fe KOA

    Exceptional service & Facility!

We had 2 nights booked for an upgraded site that had a KOA PAW Pen Plus. Well, headed that way a day early. This site was not available that day.

So, no problem as we decided to move the next morning! Well, at checkout time 11 am, the people had not left!

Laura & Jess did an amazing job handling the situation. The person that had checked in decided to stay another day.

Laura explained that 1st you must talk to the office prior to checkout time. 2ndly, the site they were on was already reserved & paid

Laura & Andy(? maintenance mgr) were Johnny on the appt because they knew we were waiting.

Andy helped them pack up ans move. Quickly cleaned the PAWS PET PLUS. We headed over and moments later they were moved! 30 minutes max!

Excellent customer service, the people and attitude!

We enjoyed the short time we were with them!

    Strongly recommend!

PS.we have a dog & cat. The dog is black & didn't show up in the photos šŸ˜€

Manzanita Rec Zone Dispersed Camping - Sandia District

DO NOT DRIVE OUT HERE IN THE RAIN

The road is absolutely horrible. I drove out here in my 2wd express van in dry condition. The road is absolutely awful. Rutted up very bad but in dry conditions it’s passable. The camp land is very hilly. Kinda hard to find level ground.

    Forest Road 376 Cross

    FS 376 dispersed camping

I came in on a Sunday afternoon and loads of vehicles were leaving so I think the weekend was packed. Stayed 3 days and hardly saw anyone. Super beautiful and a herd of black cows roams up and down mooing at the end of the day. No services, pack your trash out and don't leave the trash bag at the entrance for critters to tear up like some sicko did.

    Las Vegas/New Mexico KOA Journey

    Enjoyable Park

Super hospitable, friendly staff. Cute cats and dogs all around. Pretty views and conveniently located within driving distance of a lot of attractions. Def recommend checking out the local hot springs. The breakfast is good and a great value, very convenient.

    Villanueva State Park Campground

Beautiful trails, spots kind of close together but nice

I have been to this campground multiple times during various seasons. In summer the river can be kind of brown/muddy looking but in the fall/winter months it's gorgeous.

The camping spots are kind of close together but they're in great spots between trees so it's not so bad. Just don't expect complete isolation or anything.

The site is very clean and well kept. I haven't interacted with hosts but see them around. It feels very safe there.

My dog and I enjoy the trails and cute little bridge to get to the trails. The landscape is beautiful and there are some excellent spots really close to the river. Those are my favorite.

I'll definitely be back here, likely in fall and spring.

    Balloon View RV Park

    Easy enough

Stayed one night while passing through and calling same day worked out perfectly. Super convenient, central location in Albuquerque. The park has a lot of long-term residents, so it feels more like an RV community than a campground, but it was fine for a quick overnight stop to charge the batteries and hook up to water. Easy in and out and did the job for a one-night stay.

    Villanueva State Park Campground

    Great creekside state park.

This is a great state park along the Pecos. Nice sites with Adobe looking table covers. There is water, electric hookups at some sites. There are showers and some porta John's. I think there is flush toilets were the showers are, but didn't go there. River is beautiful with places you can drag a chair up to the edge. Big cliff on other side where I watched squirrels jump around. Coming in on highway 3 is an adventure. It goes through center of the little town of Villanueva which has a small convenience store. One thing I'll mention is that they close the gate at a certain hour. Be sure to check when in case your plans might make you late.
