Reservations at Croton Point Park require a phone call rather than an online booking, and campers won't learn their assigned site until they check in at the gate. Rates run $30 to $60 per night, with the higher end applying to those without a Westchester County pass. The campground sits on a peninsula along the Hudson River in Croton-on-Hudson, with drive-in access and a keyed gate separating the camping area from the rest of the park. Sites accommodate RVs up to 50 feet and include electric and water hookups, while tent sites occupy a separate section with newer picnic tables.
The layout divides full hookup RV sites from tent camping, though both areas are noted as fairly clustered. Trees separate the RV pads, but spacing is tight. Raccoons are active at night, and campers should store food securely. The bathhouse is dated but clean, and park staff and rangers conduct regular patrols throughout the day and night, enforcing a detailed set of rules that some visitors find more restrictive than typical county campgrounds. Quiet hours are set at 10 p.m., though noise from neighboring sites has run later.
The park itself provides more to do than the campground alone: swimming at a guarded beach area, walking paths, a playground, and a basketball court are all within reach. No on-site camp store means campers need to stock up beforehand, though a supermarket is a short drive away. A train yard adjacent to the park generates audible noise overnight. The campground works best for RV campers with hookup needs who want a base near the Hudson Valley and don't mind a structured, rule-forward environment.
Description
Croton Point Park is a 508-acre park situated on a peninsula on the east shore of the Hudson River. This park offers year-round events and activities and has facilities for camping, hiking and swimming. The park, rich in natural and human history, is also the site of historic wine cellars that are thought of be the oldest in New York State and the Croton Point Nature Center. The oldest oyster shell middens on the North Atlantic Coast uncovered by archeologists on Croton Point confirm that the peninsula was inhabited by Native Americans as early as 7,000 years ago. Croton is in fact named for the Indian sachem, Kenoten, which means "wild wind.” In the 17th century, Indians of the Kitchawank tribe on the Wappinger Confederacy occupied a large fortified village on the high flat at the neck of Croton Point, which they called Navish. This was one of the most ancient and formidable Indian fortresses south of the Hudson Highlands.
