Best Dispersed Camping near West Wendover, NV

Dispersed camping around West Wendover centers primarily on BLM lands near the Bonneville Salt Flats and Silver Island Mountains. Several free primitive sites exist within a short drive of Interstate 80, including the Volcano Peak area, Silver Island Mountains dispersed sites, and BLM land adjacent to the Salt Flats. These locations offer no facilities or services but provide accessible public land camping with minimal restrictions. Most sites lie on the Utah side of the border, though some dispersed options exist in Nevada as well.

Many access roads in this area feature hard-packed dirt with occasional washboarding and exposed rocks. While some sites can accommodate larger vehicles and RVs, others require high-clearance or 4WD capability, particularly at Cave Hill and Pilot Peak Lookout. There are no water sources, toilets, or trash services at any of these locations. Camping is generally limited to 14 days. Fire restrictions may apply seasonally, especially during summer months. The terrain is typically hard-packed desert soil that may present challenges for tent stakes. Cell service varies but is generally available due to proximity to I-80.

The dispersed sites in this region provide panoramic desert views across the salt flats with mountain backdrops. Many campers note the extreme quiet and isolation despite relative proximity to the interstate. The area is known for dramatic sunrises and sunsets, with several elevated camping areas offering particularly spectacular vistas. Wind can be a significant factor, especially at higher elevation sites. As one camper noted, "Watching the sun rise over the salt flats the next morning was just short of spiritual." Another review mentioned that "The wind on top of the hill was brutal around 8pm so I went back down the road a little ways to set up camp." Stargazing opportunities are excellent due to minimal light pollution, though proximity to Wendover provides convenient access to supplies.

    Volcano Peak Campground (Dispersed)

Easy access close to salt flats

You can’t camp on the salt flats but this is the next best thing. Unpaved road but very reasonable for even 2WD. There are plenty of sites along the road here and more private ones further in if you have 4WD and high clearance. Easy to get to West Wendover for supplies (and casinos!)

Silver Island Mountains by Bonneville Salt Flats

    Salt Flat camping

Set up camp near Bonneville salt flats above the Silver Island Mountains backcountry byway. There are many campsites and all are far away from each other. As well as far away from highway. Site is very quiet but the flies before sundown are crazy. No bug spray works at all. They lick it off your skin and bite you regardless. Once sun goes down it's calm and peaceful. Great place to camp.

BLM by Salt Flats - Dispersed Site

    Wide open free BLM

Exit Bonneville Speedway. Head N past Sinclair (on right). Veer to left, which is Leepy (if you stay right youre on the Peninsula easy turn around at end) about a mile in Leppy veer to the right on the dirt road. It is wash boarded but totally doable. That leads you to the BLM parking lot. There are tons of spots all around there. To the left will lead you back to Leepy. To the right there are tons more spots. Some level, some not. You will be able to find a turn around spot (I'm towing 33' TT) if you don't want to go the, what I was told 40 mile loop. It is wash boarded. Only potable water I found was KOA in West Wendover. They also have a dump. Has a tendency to get VERY windy.

    Volcano Peak Campground (Dispersed)

Close to town, but feels far away. Can get busy.

    Stayed: 5/14/2021

    Cost: FREE

    Site: SEE PIC

    Vehicle: Volkswagen Atlas

    Equipment: Tent

    AT&T: Weaker 5G

    T-Mobile: 2 bars LTE

This is a great area, just outside of the Bonneville Salt Flats, and minutes from the towns of Wendover and West Wendover, at the Nevada and Utah state line. Apple Maps had some issues with us getting to these sites, because it thought it was only walkable, and that there was no road. So, if you plug it in and there is a crazy long commute, that could be why.

Once you take the turn off of Leppy Pass Road, there is an open area that had some RVs and others camping out. If you continue east, passing the ‘Silver Island Mountains Back Country Byway’ sign, you will end up at the Volcano Peak Dispersed area. We traveled about 2 miles down this road, going around a curve with a flat area and big rock to the right. There are many more sites this way, but we turned around and chose the site marked in the map picture. Heads up, the road can be a little rough!

We had some cool views of the flats, I-80 in the distance and surrounded by the mountains. It is a little close to the road and there was quite a bit of traffic, so noise and dirt/dust could be an issue. However, it is a beautiful site!

    Fantastic camping near Salt Flats

Private and quiet spot off the highway to camp near the Salt Flats. If you get a spot that can prevent some of the major winds in this area it will be best for you if you’re camping in a tent. If you’re sleeping in a camper or vehicle it won’t matter.

    Volcano Peak Campground (Dispersed)

    Stunning view and very dispersed

This is an absolutely breathtaking spot. Right in the middle of nowhere. Quite far away from the highway and very dispersed camp sites.

You have the mountains in the back and the salt flats in front of you. Very beautiful and calm. There are plenty of spots and you will barely see your neighbors.

You have the occassional biker, hammering through the plains and the access road is a pain for any motor home or any vehicle for that matter. It got that wash board feeling and I was afraid it might rip appart my RV when I was going over pedestrian speeds. And its not serviced, so no hook ups or any other amenities.

Other than that its a beautiful place to stay if you enjoy the deserted landscape and prefer to have a very private spot for the night.

    Volcano Peak Campground (Dispersed)

    A thing of beauty

This is a pristine area elevated a bit off the salt flats but with views for miles. With the mountains as the backdrop, they make for a great day hike. Wendover is nearby for supplies, and you’ll need them here as there are no hookups. This is a great wide open boon-docking stop over on our way west. Close to Hwy 80, and only slightly off the beaten path, but well worth the detour. BLM land.

    Pilot Peak Lookout

Pilot Peak Lookout - Dispersed BLM

Bonneville Speedway Access Rd > Left on Leppy Pass Rd till you reach a strange mysterious government building > Right on Silver Island Loop Rd > veer right on Volcano West Rd

Dope spot on a bluff looking out at the entire valley, with Pilot Peak prominently featured.   Plenty of space to maneuver and very level.  Already some fire pits.

Watch the rocks on Volcano West rd as you approach the lookout - I made it with my 25 ft travel trailer, but be careful you don't bottom it out.

You can see for miles in every direction, but limited protection from wind.   Wasn't too bad when I was there but I imagine it could be.

Super close to West Wendover and the salt flats.  There's dozens of campsites in this area so definitely go exploring.  While the roads are generally in good shape, some of have pretty bad wash boarding, especially when towing.

Some cell reception, great for Starlink obviously.

Guide to West Wendover

Dispersed camping opportunities near West Wendover, Nevada exist primarily on the Utah side of the border, with several free camping areas located within the Silver Island Mountain Range. The region sits at approximately 4,300 feet elevation, featuring a high desert climate with significant temperature fluctuations between day and night. Hard-packed desert terrain can make tent staking difficult, requiring specialized stakes or rocks to secure shelters in many locations.

What to do

Explore Silver Island Mountains Byway: The 54-mile backcountry loop offers numerous pullouts for camping and hiking. "We stayed pretty close to the road and located a fire pit. The spot was beautiful and we had a full moon, which was amazing to watch rise over the flats," notes one visitor at Silver Island Mountains by Bonneville Salt Flats.

Rockhounding: Search for agate specimens throughout the volcanic hills. At Volcano Peak Campground, one camper shared, "If you want to rock hound there are better pieces of multicolored agate high up near the ridges of the range. There are still some lower on the slopes but are mostly clear to white from being thoroughly picked over."

Visit caves and rock formations: Several small caves dot the hillsides. "This particular spot is at the base of the mountains and had a large flat area perfect for our Sprinter, a fire pit, and large rock formation great for climbing," reports a camper at BLM by Salt Flats. For more adventurous travelers, Cave Hill Dispersed Site requires "4x4 and some ground clearance" to reach the top, but rewards with "a great secluded spot."

What campers like

Sunrise views: Many campsites offer spectacular morning vistas. "Camped here to go onto the salt flats for sunrise was a beautiful place," shares a visitor to Silver Island Mountains. Another camper at BLM by Salt Flats mentions, "This spot has gorgeous views of the flats and the mountains."

Star visibility: Minimal light pollution creates excellent stargazing conditions. "The wind settled at night and the stars were highly visible due to little light pollution," notes a camper at BLM Site next to Salt Flats. Another adds, "Love this place, so quiet and serene. You can see for miles all around you."

Solitude and quiet: Despite proximity to I-80, many sites feel remote. A Volcano Peak visitor reports, "Surprisingly quiet given the proximity to the freeway, gas station, and touristy area on salt flats." At Pilot Peak Lookout, a camper notes the "Dope spot on a bluff looking out at the entire valley, with Pilot Peak prominently featured. Plenty of space to maneuver and very level."

What you should know

Wind patterns: Strong winds affect camping quality and timing. "The wind on top of the hill was brutal around 8pm so I went back down the road a little ways to set up camp," reports a Pilot Peak visitor. At Silver Island Mountains, a camper warns, "Like others have said, there's plenty of spots for everyone... The wind picked up sometime in the early morning hours and never stopped, which made packing up the tent an interesting feat."

Road conditions: Access varies significantly between sites. "Road is bumpy but not the worst we've been on," notes a Silver Island Mountains visitor. At Volcano Peak, a camper explains, "Road in is passable with 2wd but very washboarded. I used 4 high on a wet, muddy day and still slid around just a bit."

Wildlife hazards: Local fauna may cause problems. A Volcano Peak visitor warns, "Rodents chewed through our windshield fluid lines and god knows what else. Very unfortunate lol. 10/10 other than that so just be aware."

Tips for camping with families

Consider accessibility: Choose sites based on vehicle capability. A BLM by Salt Flats visitor recommends, "This is a great spot. Just to view the flats in the morning is awesome." Another adds that "The road is washboard but not bad at all in comparison to a lot of them we have been on at other sites."

Hard ground preparation: Bring appropriate sleeping gear. At Silver Island Mountains, a camper advises, "The ground is hard, so make sure to bring something soft to sleep on. The stacks were also a bit hard to get into place, even with a mallet."

Pet-friendly options: Many sites work well for dogs. "If you have dogs with you, this was also a great place to have them off the leash and play fetch since no one was around," shares a BLM by Salt Flats visitor.

Tips from RVers

Leveling challenges: Prepare for sloped parking. At Silver Island Mountains, an RVer notes, "Be ready to level your rig as everything slopes towards the salt flats. Easy access though from the interstate and only about 5 miles to two towns and casinos."

Washboard road management: Drive slowly on rough sections. "The access road is a pain for any motor home or any vehicle for that matter. It got that wash board feeling and I was afraid it might rip apart my RV when I was going over pedestrian speeds," warns a Volcano Peak visitor.

Amenities access: Plan for complete self-sufficiency. "The Maverick at exit 410 in town has a free dump station," shares a Silver Island Mountains camper, providing a valuable resource for free camping near West Wendover, Nevada.
