Upper Campground - Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge

    Great BLM site

We looked for a last minute camping spot as we went from LA to Colorado and came across this spot. It was free and pet friendly and right next to the lake which made for a beautiful sunset. The only downside is that you do hear quite a bit of traffic driving past since it’s right next to the road but it’s definitely worth it for being free.

Upper Campground - Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge

Beautiful scenery, lots of bugs & 💩

We got in on a Thursday night right around 6:30 pm. We knew we were going to be cutting it close and in our 26 foot rig out of the 10ish spaces that could fit us (some spots are only for vans or tents) only 2 were left so we suggest getting here earlier. We found a space that was available next to another camping couple who were very kind. They were pulling a Bighorn maybe a 28 ft with slides and we both fit in spots 2 and 3 with ease. The road heading in is incredibly washboarded. Stick to the left side of the road if you want a slightly less bumpy ride. Scenery was gorgeous. Lots of shade for Nevada. Amazing view of the stars too! You are close to the highway but at night the road settles down and it was not a problem for us. Being so close to the lake be prepared to be inundated with bugs at night time if you have any lights on at all. Also, people do not seem to pick up after their pets (maybe even themselves?) as the closer you get to vegetation the more poop you’ll see alongside the grass/bushes. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here. It is a donation only park and it is first come first serve! We arrived Sept 17th around 6:30 pm with only two spots left and right after we pulled in another van and camper pulled in so I’m pretty sure it was full by 7 pm. Temps were low 60s at night and 85 when we arrived up until about 8:30 pm! Each site is spaced far enough apart where you aren’t necessarily on top of each other (except for our site which was meant for two rv’s)! There are also picnic tables, grills and fire pits at each site.

    Kershaw-Ryan State Park

    SO NICE!

Hands down the nicest campground I have ever stayed at! Friendly staff, super clean and nice bathrooms,(bring quarters for the showers) RV hook ups at each space on nice lighted pedestals.

Right at the entrance to Kershaw Ryan State Park!

Super beautiful little park that has a hiking trail at the back that will take you up to some spectacular views, as well as some really cool mountain bike trails! Of which there several others in the area. If you Mountain bike, dont miss this opportunity to take advantage of these trails.

Caliente is only a few miles away, so if you forget anything, like I always do, there are places to shop. The locals couldn't be any nicer!

Dont let the name of the town fool you, it can get quite cool at night.

In short, great place and I will be back!

Eagle Valley Resort & RV Park

    Eagle Valley Resort

Stayed here in July for a family trip. Rented a small cabin for my mom and adult sons and an RV space for myself and husband. The cabin was surprisingly clean and well maintained. The rest of the park, not so much. Most of the spaces were filled by permanent residents in mostly run down trailers and spaces full of trash and other “stuff”. Dogs and cats were wandering with no leashes. The spaces were small and overgrown with weeds. The picnic tables were falling apart, warped with peeling paint. The bathroom’s were clean but the fixtures were old and mismatched. The store seemed well stocked and actually affordable. The bar was dingy but had a lot of character. The park was for sale so I assume they weren’t interested in maintenance. I’m glad we only paid $25 for the site with the Passport America membership but the $90 for the cabin seemed like a lot. It did allow us to all be together so that bumped up the stars.

    Dope little place

A super neat little spot right before you enter Spring Mountain, State Park. This Resort has cabins to rent, RV spaces available, a laundry room, pet friendly, a bar with pool tables, a store with everything you need in case you forgot it..... I mean who doesn't love a  nice cup of hot coffee. The store is run by a chill older guy who is super friendly...

The cabins have an open living area with a full/queen bed and bunk beds, Each cabin comes with a fully functional kitchen which includes: a stovetop, microwave, refrigerator, sink, coffee pot, dishes for 4, pots, and pans. It's a little small but it works. You can also get a two-bedroom perfect for grandparents and their grandkids.

Love this place, we didn't camp here but we checked everything out and had to buy new propane tanks for our heater, worms for fishing, and yummy hot coffee.

Upper Campground - Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge

    Great location with lake

Stopped here short of intended destination due to lateness of the hour and long drive. Great sites along the lake with tables and fire rings and fireplaces. Able to set up in one of the RV sites next to the water. Bike trails available, boating allowed but no swimming. Visitor center is nearby. Reasonable temps. Proximity of water does mean bugs of all kinds(gnats, nozzles, dragonflies etc.) 8 person occupancy. Only downside is proximity to the highway but not as heavily trafficked as it could be.

    Kershaw-Ryan State Park

    Pricey for Primitive

We didn’t stay in the Primitive camping because it was $15 a night. We ended up staying on the road in a pull-off section.

The road was flooded and in very bad shape. The site was very spacious.

There looked to be a Pull-behind in one area with no vehicle. A resident i presume.

The mountain view was spectacular. Very cold as it snowed the day we decided to set up.

We heard a coyote just outside our camper around 3am. It’s howls echoed throughout the range.

Right next to a railroad track. There is no crossing so the trains don’t blow their whistles through there. We are used to trains as we have a home along the Mississippi river and about 10 yards away from BNSF railway. Felt like home.

I would come back for sure, in warmer months.

    Kershaw-Ryan State Park

Beautiful gardens and desert trails surround this modest campground

There are natural springs and the flora is gorgeous!!! The short overlook trail is absolutely stunning. Our trip was in Fall so the colors were amazing. We camped for only one night but had a good visit and plan to return since this is a very nice place. This is a small first come, first serve campground with electric hookups, restrooms, and more. Each site has a picnic table, BBQ, and fire pit. The picnic table has shade and there are trees around the campground. There are showers but I didn't use them to verify they work well or are warm. There are water spouts, for use but not to hookup. There is a dump station at the park entrance but no sewer hookups. We got the last spot in the campground, it fills up quickly and people came after us who had to leave to find another place. Lesson: arrive early in the day probably between 10am-1pm will get you a spot. The campground is at the park entrance and is 0.8 miles from the main park area where the playground, wading pool, grassy areas, and most trail heads are. That main area is also where you will find maps and the stamp to use on your Nevada state parks passport. When we came the wading pool was empty. But I guess during summer it's a nice refreshing place for children to play. There are two spots to play horse shoes and one for volleyball. The playground equipment is old but usable. Cellular service is better up at the main park area than at the campground but the campground does offer wifi for a fee. Just outside the state park is a grazing area with cows and just past that is the railroad- you may hear the train from your campsite. We liked that but I'm sure some people wouldn't. Animals in the area we saw: turkey, rabbits, kangaroo rats, frogs, and various butterflies. The camping price is$15 per night without hookups,$25 with hookups OR if you get the state park all access pass then camping is free and you just pay$10 for the hookups if you use them. Read up on the Nevada State Park website for more details.

Guide to Caliente

Cathedral Gorge State Park offers campsites on flat, level gravel with electrical connections and hiking trails through unique clay formations. Located near Caliente, Nevada at 4,800 feet elevation, camping in this area features dramatic temperature shifts between day and night. The region's high desert terrain creates distinctive camping conditions with limited shade at many sites.

What to do

Explore slot canyons: Cathedral Gorge State Park provides access to narrow slot canyons and unique clay formations. "The caves were absolutely stunning. It was so much fun to play in all the slots and explore on your own. They aren't super long so it would take a lot to get lost," writes Hayley K. about Cathedral Gorge State Park Campground.

Wildlife viewing: Watch for various desert wildlife around camp. "What we noticed right away, before we even started exploring the park, was that the wildlife was super tame. The jackrabbits and lizards came right into our campsite to check us out, and there were birds singing everywhere - not what we expected from a desert landscape," notes Tara S.

Fishing opportunities: Spring Valley State Park offers fishing in its reservoir. "The reservoir was maybe 4 mins walking. Was very close depending on where you were. Plenty of places to sit and fish. It was stocked with rainbow trout," reports Cassie M. about Horsethief Gulch Campground.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Caliente maintain exceptionally clean restrooms. "Bathrooms are clean with a single shower. I had no problem with hot water," says Susan V. about Cathedral Gorge State Park. Similarly, at Kershaw-Ryan State Park, campers appreciate that "Restrooms were clean."

Dark night skies: The remote location offers excellent stargazing opportunities. "This is BLM land and we did not stay at the campground but on a level spot a few miles away. Very dark area so lots of stars," notes Joel C. about Chief Mountain West.

Peaceful camping: Many campsites provide quiet surroundings. "Nice spot to relax no close highways. Nice hike around camp," shares Breanna B. about Cathedral Gorge State Park Campground. The pet-friendly campsites throughout the area tend to be less crowded, especially during weekdays.

What you should know

Availability patterns: Campgrounds fill quickly during peak times. "This campground is super busy in the fall. We arrived at approx 3 pm and there were only 3 sites available. Within the next 20 minutes, the entire campground was full," warns Gina J.

Weather considerations: The area experiences significant temperature fluctuations. "It was cloudy night we arrived. Time of the year: July 13-16, 2022. Rain wasn't forecasted, but during the day is was about 75 and 67 at night," reports sunshine M. at Horsethief Gulch Campground.

Insects: Depending on season, bugs can be an issue. "Tons of flys at this time of the year. You must have bug repellent!" advises sunshine M. Similarly, at Chief Mountain South Campground, campers should prepare for seasonal insects, particularly in warmer months.

Tips for camping with families

Spacious sites: Some campgrounds offer larger areas for family setups. "The sites were level, groomed, and not a speck of trash to be found. Great Verizon service, no ATT," notes Nanine V. about Cathedral Gorge State Park.

Kid-friendly activities: Several areas have features children enjoy. "The nature hike to the slit canyons was super short and the kids loved exploring the caves!" shares Gina J. about her family's experience at Cathedral Gorge.

Wildlife encounters: Schedule time for wildlife viewing with children. "Every night the deer come down to graze in the field. So between 4-5pm i take the kids to watch them!" recommends Missy L. at Horsethief Gulch Campground.

Tips from RVers

Level parking: Many sites accommodate RVs with level spaces. "Campground is well maintained flat level gravel sites with some shade, power available," notes Donald J. about Cathedral Gorge Campground.

Pull-through options: At Chief Mountain South Campground, RVers appreciate the layout. "Easy access from highway. Several flat pull-through campsites," states brian S.

Hookup availability: Young's RV Park offers full services for larger rigs. "The owners of this campground are the best. This campground has plenty of shade trees and is full hookups," shares Ty A. about Young's RV Park.
