Best Campgrounds near Bloomfield, MO

Campgrounds near Bloomfield, Missouri range from developed state park facilities to private RV parks, with most concentrated around Lake Wappapello. The area features several established campgrounds including Wildwood RV Park in Dexter and multiple recreation areas at Lake Wappapello State Park, such as Ridge Campground and Asher Creek Campground. Most sites accommodate both tent and RV camping, with some locations like Ridge Campground also offering cabin rentals. Campgrounds in this region typically provide electric hookups, drinking water, and designated fire rings, while amenities vary from basic to full-service facilities with showers and dump stations.

Missouri's southeastern region experiences high humidity during summer months, making electric hookups particularly valuable. "From April to September, you're gonna want electric so you can run AC (or at least a fan), Missouri humidity is not a joke," noted one camper at Lake Wappapello State Park. Many campgrounds in the area remain open year-round, though some recreation areas like Redman Creek operate seasonally from March through October. Water access represents a significant draw, with several campgrounds offering boat launches, fishing opportunities, and swimming areas. Cell service varies throughout the region, with most developed campgrounds maintaining adequate coverage for basic communication needs.

Waterfront camping receives consistently positive reviews, particularly at Lake Wappapello and along the region's rivers. Campers frequently mention the peaceful atmosphere and scenic water views as highlights of their stay. Sites at Asher Creek Campground provide lake access with relatively uncrowded conditions, especially during weekdays. According to visitor reports, "On a Monday in July, I counted 2 other campers in the ridge campground." The region's conservation areas and state parks offer varying levels of privacy between campsites, with some locations providing well-spaced, shaded sites separated by trees. Visitors appreciate the family-friendly amenities at larger state parks, including playgrounds, hiking trails, and nature programs, while those seeking more solitude can find quieter options at smaller conservation areas or campgrounds during off-peak periods.

Mark Twain National Forest Markham Springs Campground

Beautiful out of the way spot.

This is a very clean, well kept campground in Mark Twain National Forest. It has electric, vault toilets showers and a potable water spigot. Very reasonably priced. The water was cut off for repairs shortly after I arrived but, no problem, stuff happens. Been here 12 days and it has been very enjoyable. I did a field report and it tested my "cell" reception but I have no signal here so I am using Starlink and have a great connection so that will skew the test results. They need to ask if using Starlink before doing that test.

South Campground — Reelfoot Lake State Park

Pontoon Tour Offered by the State Park WAS WORTH IT!

Did a 2 hour pontoon tour offered at the TN State Park Visitor Center (https://tnstateparks.com/parks/reelfoot-lake). Guide was excellent. Neat to see a bald cypress in one of TN's only 2 natural lakes. The history of Reelfoot is interesting, parts of the tour feel like you are in a cypress swamp, not a lake. Saw 10 bald eagles, osprey, egret, blue heron. Worth the price and time!

    Columbus-Belmont State Park

Nice, clean campground, back sites have sewer, be prepared to level out.

Stayed here for 2 nights at site 25 on the back side of the campground. The back sites have sewer. These sites were paved, but not level, so be prepared to level. TIP: If using those yellow camco "lego" block to level, be sure to put a canvas tarp or rubber mat between the blocks and the pavement, otherwise they will slide when you try to roll on top of them. My daughter used the bathhouse, and she said it was not good. Leaky, standing water. The park was awesome, which made the bathhouse an oddity. The little snack shack over by the chain was a nice evening diversion of ice cream and funnel fries. The camp host couple was wonderful. The park is clean and well maintained.

Ridge Campground — Lake Wappapello State Park

    Great campground

Love it here, it’s got tons of campsites to choose from. Fees are very reasonable, and 30A & 50A options available. Fishing & boating close by. Laundry at restrooms.

    Piedmont Park

    Better than Expected!!

Despite living in this general area my entire life I’ve never been to Clearwater Lake, the trip was better than I expected. We got an amazing spot with 10/10 views. The first day it did rain, keeping us in the car, but after that we were able to set up our site and head straight to the water! It was pretty hot tent camping but not unbearable.

    Blue Bank Resort

Fourth of July, stay at Bluebank Resort

On our way across the Tennessee border, my fiancé decided he wanted to stay here as this is where he spent many childhood memories. Beautiful, small secluded resort on Reel foot lake. RV campground with hook ups, as well as a few different cabins to stay in surrounded by locals who live on the lake. Kayaking and motor boating, and cute little gift shop.

    Magnolia Campground & Country Store

    Highlights

    🌳 Highlights

Welcome & Hospitality Newly opened in October 2020 and family-run by Rick & Glenda Wilson, guests often highlight their warm, friendly service . One reviewer said:

    > “Owners and staff all super friendly, engaging and kind.”

Campground Quality Features include full hookups (30/50 amp, water, sewer), gravel pull-through sites for big rigs (up to ~43 ft), free WiFi, dump station, propane fill, fire pits, picnic tables, laundry, and a shower house .

On‑site Country Store & Deli A notable perk is the store with fresh deli items and daily lunch specials—particularly Friday catfish dinners—plus occasional breakfast on Saturdays .

    ⭐ Guest Reviews Snapshot

    Mick & Karla (30 Mar 2025)

Booked same-day, chose pull-through site, enjoyed 40 psi water, decent WiFi/cell service.

Friendly staff and solid amenities, though gravel/dirt sites got dusty or muddy depending on weather.

Road noise from nearby I‑57 noted. Felt $40/night was a bit high.

    CatTrailzz (24 Jul 2024)

Quiet despite being near the freeway. Loves the deli (noting salads and pulled pork).

    Clean facilities, new shower room.

    Plans to stay again.

    QueenMartell (16 Mar 2024)

    Friendly check-in, excellent service.

Accommodated a 43 ft fifth wheel with ease.

Highly recommends, loves the Friday catfish.

Other reviewers (Kitty, Kyla D, Tergeo)

Consistently mention friendly owners, clean/gravel sites, good common areas, and a strong likelihood to return .

    Pros & Cons

    👍 Pros 👎 Cons

Warm, personal service Sites are gravel/dirt—can be dusty or muddy Full hookups and big‑rig friendly Road noise from I‑57 On-site deli with fresh food & catfish dinners Wi-Fi and cell coverage are serviceable but not exceptional Clean shower/laundry facilities Price (~$39–40/night) might be a bit high for basic amenities

    Summary

Magnolia Campground is a great overnight or short-term stop if you’re looking for friendly hospitality, solid basic RV hookups, and the novelty of a country store with good food in southeast Missouri. It’s particularly suited for large RVs, travelers who enjoy a welcoming vibe, and those who appreciate a Friday catfish dinner. It’s not a destination resort, so if you're seeking plush amenities or a quiet nature getaway, plan accordingly.

    Bottom Line

If you're rolling through with an RV and want a hassle-free, friendly, quick stay with full hookups and good food, Magnolia is a solid choice. For longer stays, be prepared for gravel underfoot and some road noise—but clean facilities and warm hosts might still make it worth it.

Guide to Bloomfield

Camping near Bloomfield, Missouri centers around Lake Wappapello, which sits at approximately 360 feet above sea level. The southeastern Missouri terrain features low rolling hills with oak-hickory forests surrounding the 8,400-acre lake. Winter temperatures typically range from 20-45°F while fall camping offers milder conditions with less humidity than summer months.

What to do

Seasonal events: Redman Creek Recreation Area hosts special events throughout their operating season. "They do a Trick or Treating event at Halloween. Campers decorate campsites and the kids walk through. They also hold the Festival of Lights around Christmas time," notes a camper at Redman Creek Recreation Area.

Fishing opportunities: Multiple lakes and ponds provide fishing options at various conservation areas. "People's Creek has upper and lower campsites. Upper is basically less trees and isn't near the lake. People's lower has a mixture of sites that are very close to the lake but relatively less shade," explains a visitor to Peoples Creek - Lake Wappapello.

Hiking trails: Several conservation areas feature walking paths through paw paw forests and oak woodlands. "The paw paw loop trail was forested by hundreds of paw paw trees. The entire trail smelled of apple cider vinegar and was quite pleasant," reports a camper who stayed at General Watkins Conservation Area.

What campers like

Spacious campsites: Many campgrounds offer well-spaced sites with natural features. "Peoples Creek has nicely spaced sites and well maintained facilities. There is a public swimming beach and boat ramps located at the entrance. In addition, there is a private beach area where you can pull your boat up if you are a patron of the campground," according to a review of Peoples Creek - Lake Wappapello.

Clean facilities: Campers frequently mention well-maintained bathhouses at established campgrounds. "The bathroom/bath house was brand new and so very nice! Loved the huge fire pits for sitting around and watching the sun set over the lake," shared a visitor at Asher Creek Campground.

Multiple water access points: Lake access varies between campgrounds with some offering beach areas. "The sites closest to the lake are very level, and everyone in the campground is only a short walk from the cleanest park restrooms I've ever seen," notes a camper who stayed at Asher Creek Campground.

What you should know

Limited services at conservation areas: Primitive sites typically have minimal amenities. "There are about 5 primitive sites. No water sewer or electric. There are multiple lakes in the area and hiking trails as well," explains a reviewer at General Watkins Conservation Area.

Seasonal operation: Some campgrounds close during winter months. Redman Creek Recreation Area operates from March 15 to October 31, while others like Peoples Creek and Holliday Landing remain open year-round.

Varied site conditions: Quality and maintenance differ between campgrounds and specific loops. "I felt like this campground was cramped. We stayed at the East campground. The sites were a little closer to each other than what we are use to," reports one camper at Ridge Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Some campgrounds feature dedicated play areas for children. "Has a playground in the middle by the shower house. They do a Trick or Treating event at Halloween," mentions a visitor to Redman Creek Recreation Area.

Swimming options: Natural beach areas provide alternatives to pool swimming. "The lake is great to swim in - very clean bottom and not slimy at all. We did take our kayaks and paddled around a little but mostly stayed on beaches and swam," shares a camper who visited Ridge Campground.

Educational programs: Some parks offer nature activities. "They had some sort of eagle program they put on for kids/families twice during our stay - didn't attend, but nice that they offer it," notes a camper at Redman Creek Recreation Area.

Tips from RVers

Electric hookup variations: Power options differ between campgrounds. "Sites are only a few miles from our house, we use it to test out new gear. Spots are perfect for smaller rigs," explains a local camper about General Watkins Conservation Area.

Dump station locations: Not all campgrounds offer on-site sewer connections. "Decent cell service for both ATT & Verizon. Some site are full hook up, but most are e&w only," notes a visitor to Peoples Creek.

Navigation challenges: Some campgrounds have difficult access roads. "The twisty turns will grab your stabilizers and bumper if you're not very careful. Our original site was extremely unlevel but thankfully we were able to get into a level one last minute," warns an RVer who stayed at Peoples Creek - Lake Wappapello.
