Camping spots near Imperial, Missouri range from rugged tent sites to full-facility RV parks within a 30-mile radius. Winter temperatures generally remain mild enough for year-round camping at most locations, with occasional freezes between December and February.
What to do
River activities: Robertsville State Park offers river access popular with paddlers. "There's also a lake within a few minutes walking, although the current was too strong to swim we were told it's home to many large catfish," notes a visitor who enjoyed the serene setting.
Hiking trails: Washington State Park Campground features multiple trail options, including the challenging 1000 Steps Trail. "We hiked the 1000 step trail. Most of the campers did fine but those who were not use to hiking did struggle a bit. If you are use to hiking, then this trail should not be any problem for you," according to one Scout leader who visited with his group.
Historical exploration: Washington State Park contains Native American petroglyphs and structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. "This park is so rich in Missouri and USA history - from buildings constructed by the African-American CCC stonemasons to Native American petroglyphs, there's some fascinating stuff here," shares a visitor who explored the historical features.
Local attractions: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Resort offers proximity to Six Flags amusement park. "We spent a weekend here because we wanted to be close to six flags. I swear this place was more fun!!! There's swimming, games, lots of activities and you can go from rustic rent a tent to a really nice cabin with lots amenities!!" writes an enthusiastic camper.
What campers like
Proximity to St. Louis: Many campers appreciate the convenient location of Draft Kings at Casino Queen RV Park. "Great location for the arch or downtown visit. We felt safe in a rough looking area of STL. Big rig friendly. Pay attention to email for check in process and gate code," notes one visitor who used it as a base for city exploration.
Swimming holes: St. Francois State Park has natural water features that visitors enjoy during summer months. "It has decent camping sites and they are right next to the river and swimming holes. The hiking trails are a few of my favorites in MO. The park is big and has several picnic and swimming areas," shared a summer visitor.
On-site dining options: The restaurant at Cahokia RV Parque receives consistent praise. "Convenient location for a city visit. Getting in after a long drive and seeing the on-site BBQ restaurant was a huge positive. Facilities are clean and orderly. We have booked a return trip already," writes a repeat camper who enjoyed the amenities.
Shaded sites: Greensfelder County Park offers tree cover that campers value during hot months. "Quieter despite the surroundings. Due to foliage, seems much more spacious and nature rich," according to a visitor who appreciated the natural environment despite proximity to urban areas.
What you should know
Train noise: Several campgrounds near Imperial experience train noise due to proximity to rail lines. At St. Louis West / Historic Route 66 KOA, "It was a nice campground with tree cover over most of it. Our site was gravel to park on with grass around it. Close to train tracks and highway, but didn't notice with AC on in the camper."
Reservation requirements: State parks in the area often require reservations well in advance, especially for weekends. "But if you go during the week you can have the place pretty much to yourself. And the raccoons. Just saying," notes a visitor to Robertsville State Park regarding weekday availability.
Site layout challenges: Some campgrounds have unusual layouts that affect camping experience. At St. Francois State Park, "The campground has oddly shaped campsites causing a crowded feel. The campground is also loud on the weekends especially if there are races at the nearby Bonne Terre drag strip."
Seasonal facilities: Winter campers should note reduced amenities at some parks. As one visitor to Babler Memorial State Park observed, "Not having water available except at the camp host, and no open restrooms and showers until after April 1, regardless of when the last freeze is was inconvenient for a spring break trip."
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Greensfelder County Park offers programs suitable for children. "If you are a family with children, if you want to enjoy Six Flags and then go camping, if you would like mountain biking, if you need facilities such as bathrooms and showers" you'll enjoy this park, according to a reviewer who evaluated its family-friendliness.
Playground access: Cahokia RV Parque includes facilities specifically for children. "There was after hours check in! But also a so friendly staff in the office. Beautiful coded bathrooms with showers. They were heated and warm and very well marked... Oh and an awesome playground for the kids!!"
Pool availability: During summer months, swimming pools provide relief from heat. At St. Louis West KOA, one visitor noted, "Stayed here for trip to six flags, well taken care of. People are friendly, has a nice and clean pool. Little shop with all sorts of stuff."
Safety considerations: At Washington State Park, campers appreciate the secure feeling. "It is quiet and feels extremely safe. There aren't many sites, but the ones they have are quiet and spacious. There is one bathroom, centrally located, that was a 2-3 minute walk from our campsite."
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Covered Bridge RV Park & Storage offers varied spaces for different RV sizes. "Only sites 20-29 have electric and 28 can't be reserved. Most sites are great for trailers 26' or less and 1 slide (sites 24-26 can fit a fifth wheel probably no bigger than 36-38 ft)," advises an RVer who stayed there.
Utility setup: RVers should note the layout of hookups at campsites. At Draft Kings Casino Queen, "Utilities are set up weird on all sites - Water and electric are at the very rear of the site by the sewer, so you will need a decent sized hose to reach if your water intake is in the front of your camper."
Leveling requirements: Terrain can require additional equipment for comfortable RV setup. At Robertsville State Park, "This is a nice quiet campground but the lots are pretty uneven so make sure you bring plenty of cribbing. The spaces are electric only, so if you are wanting full hookups you better look elsewhere."
Laundry access: Some campgrounds provide laundry facilities convenient for extended stays. "Showers and restrooms are in the horse camping portion of the campground," notes a Greensfelder County Park visitor, while another reports, "The showers house needs some help. But the camp sites felt secluded. The dump station was a little broke down," at Robertsville State Park.
