      Davis Lake Campground

      “Literally lake front camping!”

Davis Lake Recreation Area is situated just 4 miles from the Natchez Trace Parkway. The campground is adjacent to the Eastern shore of the 200 acre Davis Lake. 14 sites are right on the lake front offering spectacular sun rises and evening sun sets, The lake is known to anglers, and wildlife and birds are a given…we had a Great Blue Heron"friend" during our entire stay. The sites were level, paved, and all had nice spacing, picnic tables, fire pits and well cared for electric service (50 amp) and water. Bathhouses were clean and laundry was available. Dump Station. Plenty of historic places to visit in the area and groceries are available in Houlka just 4 miles away. We visited in late September with only 6 sites in use…felt like we had the place to ourselves…and being located in the Tombigbee National Forest there was no light pollution making the night sky a spectacular sight to see.

Jeff Busby Campground, Milepost 193.1 — Natchez Trace Parkway

      FREE but....

This Natchez Trace Parkway free campground offers oddly placed paved parking areas, grills, tall fire rings, and picnic tables (most appeared in disrepair). Bathrooms were clean however older and not heated...and no hot water or soap. The parking is pull through but not clearly defined. Grills and tables were randomly placed. The park is rolling hills and drop offs at the curb side of some sites. No electric or water hook ups but there is a single outside faucet at the bathroom for potable water. Large shade trees made for minimal solar power. Honestly I had an eery unsure feeling during my 2 night stay. It appeared like mostly men were staying there and was just an odd placement of sites in general. I suppose it was the undefined site borders. I stayed in a pull through that was the nearest to the restroom. Had I not watched a YouTube video by 2tiredteachers when researching my trip, I would have been very confused on where the site were to even park at. But the highlight was Little Mountain!!

      Natchez Trace RV Park

      Not a fan

This campground is huge with tons of stuff to do for families and large groups. There are lakes, trails, riding trails, swimming pool, party house, cabins to rent just to name a few. RV sites are mostly long term and very full. If you are looking for just an overnight, my advice is to keep looking. Otherwise have a great week long stay at this campground.

      Davis Lake Campground

      Easy rv camping

We took our 23 foot forest river TT on its maiden voyage here in mid June. It was easy to navigate even though it was dark. Nice level site. There is 30 and 50 amp electric and good water pressure.

We stayed in site 18 by the water, most lakeside sites are about 20 feet from shore, and are mostly grass besides the driveway and tent pad. While we loved the campground we probably wouldn’t go back to this site. There were 2 knockdown trees in front of the site, which made fishing hard. There was also a beehive in the tree close to the fire pit.

The sites away from the water looked to be uneven and on a slope so beware if you take an rv.

There is a swimming beach, a pier, and plenty of place to tie up a boat. We plan to return and explore some more!

      Pickensville Campground

      Nice Campground

We visit Pickensville Campground a lot because my MIL lives in Pickensville down the road from the campground. Friendly staff. We stayed at site 126. It was on the river across from the bathrooms. Site we stayed at had power and water hookups. They have a community dumping station. I think some of the sites have sewer hookup but ours didn’t.

      Choctaw Lake

      Made for RVs

If you get a spot on the lake it is definitely worth it but it is more like an RV resort not really made for tent camping. Very well maintained, excellent for fishing. Hardly any cell signal with ATT but better than nothing.

      Starkville KOA

      Friendly Staff

I really don't have much to say because I am a newbie. This was our first KOA site. I will say it suited us very well. It was shaded, our site was level, pet friendly, they were expecting us, and free firewood was provided. Also, we got in a little chat with some interesting local info built in.

      Davis Lake Campground

      Natchez Trace Parkway recreation area

Pretty wooded area. This is a fairly developed area along this scenic drive, with swimming, rail-to-trail biking and hiking trail, wildlife viewing, etc. The campsite is simple, open with trees, and many sites are right along the water (the rest are a tiny walk away).

Yay: simple but clean with extras like showers, piers, etc. Lots more to do nearby in the National Forest.

Nay: No complaints. The hiking trail is very short though.

Surprise: Great wildlife! Came here for bird watching. Will return to bike the Tanglefoot Trail.

      Davis Lake Campground

Decent enough for a couple days.

This is very near my home. It's a decent enough area for a day or two but not enough for an extended stay for me personally. Facilities are really only maintained during peak season and even then I've been greeted by dirty showers and restrooms more than once. The swimming area steps are quite slippery as well and muscle shells are ever present so i would recommend aquatic footwear if you plan on using this area.

    Guide to Starkville

Starkville, Mississippi offers RV and camping options beyond the city limits with several accommodations located within 30 miles of town. The area sits at approximately 335 feet above sea level in Mississippi's Golden Triangle region, characterized by rolling hills and nearby waterways including the Tombigbee River. Most campgrounds remain open year-round with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F and mild winters rarely dropping below freezing.

    What to do

Explore Elvis's birthplace: Natchez Trace RV Park provides a convenient base for visiting Elvis Presley's birthplace in nearby Tupelo. "Close to Tupelo if you like Elvis," notes Joel R., who found the park to be "quiet" with "sites large enough to relax."

Visit recreational lakes: The region offers multiple lake access points for fishing, boating and swimming. Natchez Trace RV Park features several amenities beyond standard camping. "This campground is huge with tons of stuff to do for families and large groups. There are lakes, trails, riding trails, swimming pool, party house, cabins to rent just to name a few," reports Wendy T.

Attend Mississippi State events: During university events, campgrounds fill quickly. The John W. Starr Memorial RV Park provides closest access to campus with electric hookups and shower facilities, though availability becomes limited during football weekends and graduation ceremonies.

    What campers like

According to Jason R., "This is great little campground. The Cabins were recently added and is a nice feature. Always quiet and owners are very accommodating."

Convenience to Interstate: Parkwood RV Park in Columbus provides easy access to Highway 82, allowing campers to reach Starkville in approximately 25 minutes while having proximity to Columbus amenities and shopping.

    What you should know

Limited amenities at some locations: Country Dogs RV Park offers electric service with 50-amp connections but lacks water hookups, shower facilities and other amenities common at larger establishments.

Seasonal considerations: During football season, advance reservations become essential as RV sites near campus fill quickly, often months in advance for SEC conference game weekends.

    Tips for camping with families

Cabin options: For families without RVs, several parks offer alternative accommodations. "The Cabins were recently added and is a nice feature" at The Oaks RV Park, according to Jason R., providing weather protection for those not equipped for tent camping.

Overnight vs. extended stays: When seeking quick overnight accommodations, consider campground occupancy patterns. At Natchez Trace RV Park, one camper advises: "RV sites are mostly long term and very full. If you are looking for just an overnight, my advice is to keep looking.
