Within the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway system, Pickensville Campground operates under US Army Corps of Engineers management along Alabama's waterfront corridor. The 176-site facility sits beside the waterway where commercial barges navigate toward the lock and dam system throughout the day and night.
Finding the entrance requires attention since GPS often directs visitors to the recreation area instead. Jaimee D. notes to "take side road on left when you see the welcome to Alabama sign on the right" rather than following standard navigation. Sites include both pull-through and back-in configurations with water and electric hookups, while some locations offer full sewer connections.
The campground's waterfront sites provide direct views of barge traffic moving through the Tennessee-Tombigbee corridor. Mirror Lake within the facility features wooden walking bridges for exploration. Neil T. describes "wonderful wooden bridges" that make the swampy areas "easily explored." Fishing opportunities exist along the waterway, and the facility maintains a community dump station for those without sewer hookups.
Bathhouses show their age but receive regular cleaning according to multiple reviews. Water pressure runs strong, though initial flow may appear discolored after periods of non-use. Cell service varies significantly with Verizon coverage described as inconsistent. The campground can experience flooding during heavy rains, though most sites remain accessible.
Summer months bring heavy mosquito populations, while cooler seasons offer relief from insects. Commercial services including Dollar General and fuel stations operate 2-3 miles away. For different camping experiences, Tom Bevill Visitor Center provides an alternative just over a mile southwest.
