Notable options include Hernando Point on Wheeler Road with both tent and RV sites, while Arkabutla Lake hosts multiple campgrounds including Dub Patton and South Abutment Recreation Areas. These mixed-use campgrounds provide varying levels of amenities, from primitive tent sites at Kellys Crossing to full-hookup RV parks like EZ Daze in Southaven, which features concrete pads and modern facilities.

Most campgrounds in the Hernando area remain open year-round, though seasonal conditions affect facility availability and comfort. Summer temperatures frequently exceed 90°F with high humidity, making spring and fall more comfortable for tent campers. Many campers note the accessibility of facilities during winter months when crowds thin significantly. Several campgrounds provide sanitary dump stations, electric hookups, and drinking water, though primitive sites with minimal amenities are also available. According to one visitor, "Area of the park is very clean, bathrooms are always very clean and nice. Only complaint is the lack of usable WiFi. But over all we love it."

RV enthusiasts praise the concrete pads and full hookups available at several Southaven facilities, while tent campers can find more natural settings at lake-adjacent sites. Proximity to Memphis makes these campgrounds convenient bases for exploring urban attractions while maintaining access to outdoor recreation. Water-based activities dominate during warmer months, with boating access available at multiple Arkabutla Lake campgrounds. A review mentioned that EZ Daze RV Park offers "Level, nice concrete pads. Good hookups. Workers all very pleasant. Quiet location close to gas station and stores." Noise levels vary significantly, with highway-adjacent sites experiencing consistent traffic sounds while lakeside options provide more tranquility. Family-oriented amenities are prominent at Jellystone Park Memphis, which features playgrounds, a swimming pool, and seasonal water activities that appeal to campers with children.

Roundabout Oxford RV & Water Resort

      Not bad

This place was nice and had wonderful food and employees when it first opened. I believe they changed management and it has gone downhill.

      Puskus Lake

      Closed

This area is closed. I spoke to a ranger this morning who said the road is full of widow makers. People are moving his barricades and going in anyway.

      Mississippi River State Park Campground

Mississippi River State Park — Worth the Drive Into Nowhere

This place is a hidden gem. The campground is small, but the sites are surprisingly spacious — you won’t feel stacked on top of your neighbors here. The lake is gorgeous, the facilities are clean and well-maintained, and the birdwatching is honestly next level — more birds than you can imagine, all day long.

Just know what you’re getting into: this park is genuinely in the middle of nowhere. Don’t plan on going out to dinner — there isn’t anywhere to go. A decent grocery store nearby covers the basics, so stock up before you settle in. Free WiFi at the campground was a nice surprise touch given how remote it feels.

If you want a peaceful, well-kept campground away from crowds and noise, this is it. Just come prepared and ready to unplug — except maybe for the WiFi.

      Puskus Lake

      Gorgeous Place!

Stayed here three beautiful nights. Take the road down slow - there are some big chunks missing, but it didn’t cause me any issues. The lake is beautiful and they have decks right by the waterfront to relax in. I can’t speak to the facilities since I brought my own water and didn’t check out the toilets, but if you just need a pretty place to sleep, this was perfect!

      Hurricane Landing

      Very nice

Showed up after rain and the grass was a little long. They showed up to mow the day after we arrived. There are showers and bathrooms and the spot was very affordable. Walking distance from the water. I could see the water from my spot.

      Puskus Lake

      Neat little place

Nice place but since the ice storm hit, it is definitely in need of some clean up.

    Guide to Hernando

Campsites near Hernando, Mississippi provide varied terrain options from lakefront spots to wooded retreats within 20 miles of town. Arkabutla Lake dominates the camping landscape with a shoreline offering fishing access and boat launches at multiple locations. Winter temperatures typically range from 30-50°F, making year-round camping viable with proper equipment, while summer humidity remains consistently high from June through September.

    What to do

Fishing at the lake edge: At Dub Patton Campground, campers enjoy direct water access for fishing. "I love the fishing," notes one visitor who gave the campsite top ratings.

Observe river traffic: The Mississippi River provides unique viewing opportunities at Tom Sawyer's RV Park where campers can watch commercial vessels. "Tugboats pushed barges against the current at a slower than walking pace. Trees with root balls intact floated downstream," describes one camper about their riverside experience.

Hiking nearby trails: While many Hernando-area campsites focus on water activities, land-based recreation includes hiking trails at some locations. One reviewer at T.O. Fuller State Park mentioned "We were able to hike and enjoyed it" despite some facilities being closed during their visit.

    What campers like

Concrete pads at premium sites: Many RVers appreciate the solid foundations at EZ Daze RV Park where convenience meets comfort. "Such a gem of a campground - 15 minutes off I-40 East but felt like a safe option a little ways out of the busy downtown Memphis area. From the moment I pulled in I could tell I had made a great choice - super clean showers, bathroom and laundry," one reviewer reported.

Waterfront camping views: Sites with water views rank highly among reviews of South Abutment Recreation Area, where most sites feature direct lake access. "Beautiful clean and safe for families or solo campers. Many water view spots and full hookups throughout the campground," notes one reviewer who valued both the scenery and facilities.

Shade availability: Summer campers particularly appreciate tree cover. "We love this place! Clean, and quiet, with good sized sites," mentioned one visitor to Hernando Point who gave the campground five stars.

    What you should know

Airport noise impacts some campgrounds: Some campsites experience regular aircraft disturbances. At Southaven RV Park, one camper reported, "Incoming flights to Memphis start flying overhead at 4:15 am. They take a direct path over top of this park."

Weather-dependent closures: Some riverside camping options close during high water. At Tom Sawyer's RV Park, a reviewer noted, "Only problem is if the river is over its banks, then the campground is closed. We had to keep checking to see if the river was down, campground was cleaned up and open."

Primitive options limited but available: For tent campers seeking minimal amenities, Kellys Crossing Campground provides basic accommodations. "This is more of a boat ramp than a campground. There are a couple of picnic tables with a few areas to set up tents. The positive is that you won't be fighting a lot of other campers to be able to stay here," explains a visitor familiar with the site.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Sun Retreats Horn Lake provides extensive activities for children. "Traveling from California with kids who have been at the mercy of cross-country RV parks- this was a reprieve for them, pool, bikes, playgrounds. We've paid $100 a night for less," shared one traveling family.

Look for playgrounds: Some campgrounds offer better play equipment than others. At Hernando Point, one family mentioned, "Had a huge spot with lots of shade. Only complaint was there was no playground in the actual camping area."

Consider off-season visits: Family amenities vary by season at most campgrounds. A visitor to Sun Retreats Horn Lake observed, "We were staying off-season so there were no activities and they actually deflated the jumping pad, but my kids still had fun."

    Tips from RVers

Free laundry facilities: Some campgrounds offer complimentary laundry services. At Tom Sawyer's RV Park, a reviewer highlighted, "Clean restroom, free laundry and free WiFi. This is a campground we would like to stay at again."

Site leveling considerations: Many RVers note the importance of level sites. At Hernando Point, one camper mentioned "Sites are paved and full hookups at site. Nice view!" indicating the practical benefits of well-designed spots.

Utilities reliability: Power supply can vary significantly between campgrounds. One EZ Daze RV Park visitor reported an issue: "I checked my Powerdog app and it showed 142.5 volts on line 2," suggesting RVers should monitor electrical systems when connecting at some locations.
