Grenada Lake camping areas sit within the gently rolling hills of north-central Mississippi at approximately 230 feet above sea level. The lake spans 35,000 acres at summer pool level and offers camping options beyond the primary Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, with winter drawdowns exposing mudflats and summer levels creating ideal swimming conditions when temperatures typically reach 90°F from June through August.
What to do
Fishing from shore: Access multiple fishing spots at Davis Lake Campground, where most lakeside sites are within 20 feet of the water. "Literally lake front camping! The lake is known to anglers, and wildlife and birds are a given…we had a Great Blue Heron 'friend' during our entire stay," reports Stephen & Theresa B.
Disc golf: Play the course at George P. Cossar State Park Campground even during winter months. "There is a Frisbee golf course that has gotten better over time. The course is now marked very well," notes Steve G. The course is free to use for campers, though park entry fees apply.
Mini golf: Visit the Yokona Ridge area for putt-putt golf near the playground. "Bathrooms/showers were very spacious and clean. 4$+tax per person to play," shares Suzi T. The course, while basic, remains popular with younger visitors.
Wildlife viewing: Observe local fauna from your campsite at many locations. "The campground offered a playground, a couple of fishing piers and lots of room to play. Plus, the town of Grenada is close by for restaurants and stores," mentions Shana D. about North Abutment.
What campers like
Spacious sites: Enjoy ample room between campsites at many Grenada-area locations. "Large campground with a couple of different loops. The sites in the first loop are close together, but the other loops have spacious sites! Most sites are either water front or have a water view," says Shana D. of North Abutment.
Clean facilities: Access well-maintained restrooms and showers at Persimmon Hill(enid Lake). "Shower house was very clean with plenty of hot water that was controlable. Park was so clean the roads were blown clean of leaves & pine needles twice a day by worker on a driven power blower," reports Gary P.
Affordable pricing: Camp economically at Army Corps sites with senior discounts. "Full hookups, level, clean and top rated bathroom facilities. The view is great from every camp spot. $12 a day with geezer pass," notes Thomas W. about Persimmon Hill.
Lake views: Secure waterfront sites that accommodate boats at most locations. "Very big rig friendly with large concrete pads with a little extra room for a boat or toad. Great views of the lake, which is said to be one of the best crappie lakes in the United States," according to Gary P. reviewing Persimmon Hill.
What you should know
Weekend crowds: Book well in advance for Friday and Saturday stays, especially during summer. "We are only here for a few days during the week, but were assured that it would be packed on the weekends. Alot of locals come to use the lake, with a boat ramp right next to the campsites," warns Alana R. about Chickasaw Hill.
Water level changes: Check lake conditions before planning water activities. "Water level in Enid Lake was very low so the swimming beach was closed. That was kind of a bummer because Temps were in the 80's," reports Chip about their stay at Chickasaw Hill.
Site selection importance: Research specific sites before booking. "Do your research on the campsites. Some are pretty short and will not accommodate long rigs," advises Roscoe's R. about Davis Lake.
Cell service variations: Expect different coverage depending on location. "Our Verizon signal was strong enough to browse and stream with no issues but the over the air TV channels were non existent," notes Chip at Chickasaw Hill.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Choose loops near play equipment for easier kid entertainment. "Yokona ridge has a great playground for kids with the putt-putt golf course a short walk away," recommends Suzi T. about George P. Cossar State Park.
Swimming options: Verify beach status before promising kids water play. "There is a swimming beach, a pier, and plenty of place to tie up a boat," reports Nate S. about Davis Lake, though beaches may close during low water periods.
Kid-friendly biking: Set up near paved campground roads for safe cycling. "Nice place to ride bikes, at least all the kids thought so. Golf carts are popular with the locals," shares Bran P. about North Abutment.
Activity planning: Consider visiting during events for additional entertainment. "This place is beautiful and the amphitheater was used this past weekend for a wedding and it was absolutely gorgeous," notes Amanda F. about Howard Stafford Park Campground.
Tips from RVers
Leveling requirements: Bring leveling blocks for some campgrounds despite concrete pads. "Camp was quiet an very friendly camp host the rv pads are very short.an uneven," mentions Becky B. about Howard Stafford Park.
Campground layout considerations: Choose loops based on rig size and preferences. "The sites in the first loop are close together, but the other loops have spacious sites," advises Shana D. about North Abutment.
Full hookup availability: Select sites with complete utilities for extended stays. "With full hookups including sewer, which makes it nice. Not far from I-55 if you needed some place to stop for the night," shares Sandra V. about RV sites near Grenada Lake.
Parking space for towed vehicles: Look for sites with extra concrete pads for additional vehicles. "Very nice level concrete sites with plenty of parking space for coach & toad. Camp amongst the tall pines with a view of the lake from most every site," explains Gary P. about Persimmon Hill, making it ideal for larger RV setups.
