Last night and taking out at Lake One access

We found a pretty good campsite that was tucked away from main traffic. It was a nice campsite but it was a little buggier than the last campsite. Also, the trail to the toilet was very buggy, very rugged and overgrown and the toilet needed to be emptied or moved (it was really full). The view at the campsite was great though, a few really good trees for a bear bag and hammocks. It was also a great location for a quick 2 mile paddle the next morning to take out at the Lake One access, and nice because it was past the 2 portages that were into Lake Two.

Frequently Asked Questions

What permits do I need for camping at Lake One in the Boundary Waters?

You need a BWCA entry permit to camp at Lake One. Permits are limited, with only 7 issued daily for this entry point, so advance reservations are strongly recommended, especially during peak season. These permits must be obtained through the U.S. Forest Service reservation system. Additionally, all overnight visitors to the Boundary Waters need a user fee and potentially a Paddle Pass depending on the time of year. Check with the Forest Service for current regulations and reservation timelines.

Where is Lake One located in Ely, Minnesota?

Lake One is located in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) near Ely, Minnesota. It's accessible via Canoe Access Point #30, which serves as the entry point for paddlers heading into this section of the BWCA. The lake is part of a connected chain of lakes, including Lake Two, Lake Three, and Horseshoe Lake, making it a popular starting point for wilderness canoe trips in the area.

What campsites are available at Lake One in the BWCA?

Lake One features several wilderness campsites scattered along its shoreline. These are primitive backcountry sites that include a fire grate and wilderness latrine. Most sites are tucked away from main traffic routes, offering some privacy despite the lake's popularity. Site locations vary in terms of sun exposure, wind protection, and accessibility. Keep in mind that latrines at some sites may be along rugged, overgrown trails. All sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis once you're in the BWCA with a valid permit.
