Cabins near Stevensville, Michigan provide easy access to Lake Michigan's eastern shoreline, situated in the southwest corner of Michigan's lower peninsula where summer temperatures average 75-85°F during peak camping season. The area sits on ancient glacial deposits, creating distinctive dune formations and sandy beaches that stretch along the shoreline. Winter cabin rentals remain available at select locations, though facilities may be limited from November through March.
What to do
Paddle the St. Joseph River: At Shamrock Park in Berrien Springs, campers can access the river directly from the campground. "A clean and friendly municipal campground on the St. Joseph River... What impressed me most was that they have a building specifically for cleaning fish, with scales, cutting boards and sinks," notes Brian O. Bring your kayak or canoe to explore the waterway at your own pace.
Explore historic sites: Take a train ride through Eden Springs Park Campground, which features restored historic buildings from the early 1900s. "You can walk around the campground and check out the restoration on these early buildings (and a flower bed shaped like a battle ship), take a train ride with the kids around part of the grounds, and hang out in a large beer garden area and get mesmerized by a fountain," shares Daniel B. The train runs weekends only.
Pick fresh blueberries: When staying during summer months, several campgrounds offer berry picking opportunities. "This KOA has blueberry fields everywhere on the property. For a period of time in summer and early fall, you can pick your own blueberries in the morning to have in your breakfast pancakes!" reports Cindy B. about the Covert/South Haven area.
What campers like
Beach access: The proximity to Lake Michigan beaches ranks highest among camper preferences. "The beach is very nice and it's a great lake. Water is warm and the lake is big enough to have boats on it. You can rent canoes & paddle boards, and there's a section of beach that allows dogs to play and swim as well," explains Curtis about Fuller's Resort and Campground.
Family-friendly amenities: Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday receives praise for its recreational options. "There are a lot of lodging options, tons of kids activities, both free and for a small fee, great pool, cafe and store! Lots of sports equipment to loan as well. Not too big, very clean and well taken care of," reports Melissa B. Activities include barrel train rides for children.
Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention facility cleanliness as a highlight. "Wonderful campground! Lots of shade and plenty of privacy between sites. The bathroom seemed newer (South modern loop) with clean bathrooms (cleaned at least twice a day) and private shower stalls," notes Heidi S. about Warren Dunes State Park Campground. Most cabin accommodations maintain similar cleanliness standards.
What you should know
Site spacing varies dramatically: Some campgrounds offer significantly more privacy than others. "Although the campground was at full capacity it still didn't feel overcrowded," reports one visitor about Warren Dunes, while at other locations: "Campground sites can be on top of one another," notes a reviewer about Weko Beach.
