Sleepy Hollow State Park Campground welcomes pets year-round at their established sites across tent, RV, cabin, and glamping accommodations. Located near Laingsburg, 15 miles northeast of Mason, this pet-friendly park maintains clean facilities with electric hookups, drinking water, picnic tables, and fire pits at each site. Dogs must remain on 6-foot leashes throughout the camping areas and trails, with owners responsible for proper waste disposal. The primitive sites at Lansing Cottonwood Campground offer a more secluded option for camping with dogs, featuring large sites with ample trees for hammock camping and natural surroundings where wildlife sounds often drown out nearby highway noise.

Waterloo Recreation Area provides multiple pet-friendly camping options within 30 minutes of Mason, including both modern and rustic campgrounds. Portage Lake Modern Campground features black-topped sites in the north section, particularly convenient for RV campers with dogs, while Green Lake Rustic Campground offers more natural settings for tent campers with pets. The 6-foot leash rule is strictly enforced throughout all state recreation areas, with campers noting enforcement has been inconsistent during busy periods. Both recreation areas provide access to dog-friendly hiking trails, including the Waterloo-Pinckney Trail, allowing for extended day hikes with pets. The beach areas have designated swimming zones where dogs are prohibited, but pets can access water at boat launches and fishing areas when properly leashed.

      Pontiac Lake Recreation Area

      Private camping

Very private sites. I was surprised at how well each site was hidden from the others. Restrooms can be a bit far from some sites. Nice little dog park by the beach too.

      Holiday RV Campground

      Large RV Park

Nice Park Nice park for full timers. Large spots to accommodate big rigs and kids. Full hook ups. Cell service great with Verizon hotspot(22u, 20d, 38ms and AT&T cell(27d, 20u, 27ms). Playgrounds everywhere for the kids. Giant dog park and ponds. Pool was closed. Just needs more grass. Our spot was really patchy and resulted in a lot of mud. Great campground with polite and helpful staff. Don’t pass this one up.

Bathrooms were dated and we arrived Monday after Labor Day so I can't judge them. They had a FULL HOUSE on Labor Day per the front gate. I was very impressed there was no garbage at campsites and picked up very well.

      Proud Lake Recreation Area

      Clean and plenty of trees

First time out with the camper and we wanted to stay close to home so we found a campground right outside the city. You couldn't tell how close we were because there were so many trees in the area. Looked like up north

While there are plenty of trees around the grounds and lake there are not too many trees between the camp sites so you do totally see your neighbor. Bathrooms were clean at all times. Showers available. I saw basketball and ladder ball. There is a big lake with a boat launch and swimming area. Pets are allowed (leashed) Fire pit and picnic table at camp site. It was a grass site and not paved, some definitely looked more even than others. I did see more activities but we did not check them out. We also didn't go hiking due to the air quality/Canadian fires.

We would go again for a quick get away!

    Guide to Mason

Waterloo Recreation Area encompasses 21,000 acres of natural spaces with more than 40 miles of hiking trails about 30 minutes from Mason. The region features rolling terrain with elevations ranging from 850 to 1,100 feet, creating diverse camping environments across multiple campgrounds. Summer temperatures typically range from 65-85°F with occasional thunderstorms, while spring and fall camping seasons experience temperatures between 45-70°F with less rainfall.

    What to do

Fishing at multiple lakes: Blind Lake at Pinckney Recreation Area offers good fishing without leaving the campground. One visitor noted, "The lake was amazing to swim at night..must to it" while others mentioned the quality of fishing in the surrounding water bodies.

Mountain biking on established trails: Bruin Lake Campground connects to extensive trail systems. As one camper described, "We loved the trails for Mountain Bikes that are close to the Campsite! They are super fun!! 🚴🏼‍♀️🤙🏻" The trails offer varying technical difficulty levels for different skill levels.

Disc golf course access: Waterloo Portage Lake Modern provides dedicated disc golf facilities. A visitor mentioned, "Nice mix of camping & Disc golf. The course is mowed down and easy to navigate. Picnic tables, fire ring, primitive tent sites available!" The course is maintained year-round for campers.

Multi-day backpacking: The 35-mile hiking trail system at Pinckney Recreation Area allows for extended trips. A camper explained, "There are multiple camping opportunities with a variety of camping styles. Yurt rental, to hike-in rustic sites, there's good camping for anyone. A 35 mile hiking trail runs through the entire area with small day trails branching off to points of interest."

    What campers like

Spacious rustic sites: Green Lake Rustic Campground offers larger primitive sites. A reviewer observed, "The sites are generously sized, with room to stretch out. There isn't much privacy between sites, with a few exceptions, but this campsite is so quiet and well-behaved that it didn't end up mattering much."

Beach and playground facilities: Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern features family-friendly amenities. According to one camper, "The property is very well maintained with a nice park and clean bathrooms. The campground has some nice full-grown trees, but isn't extremely wooded. The trees offer shade, but are spaced out enough that a group can pull their campers around for privacy."

Star viewing opportunities: Green Lake Rustic Campground provides good night sky viewing conditions. A visitor shared, "We also were able to see some awesome stars at night." Light pollution is minimal at this location compared to other campgrounds closer to urban areas.

Varied hiking difficulty levels: Trail options accommodate different physical abilities. One camper at Blind Lake Rustic Campground noted, "This is a great trail for beginning backpackers or anyone looking for a quick escape to the woods. We hiked the 7.5 mile loop and stayed one night."

    What you should know

Leash rule enforcement varies: Dog-friendly campgrounds near Mason have inconsistent rule monitoring. A recent visitor to Waterloo Portage Lake noted, "The 6-foot leash rules are very clearly stated. There are many campers whose dogs remain the exception and don't abide by the rules. My leashed dog has been threatened by vicious larger unleashed dogs as I walk my dog more than once this month."

Campsite privacy levels: Site selection impacts your experience. At Bishop Lake Campground, one camper observed, "The campground is nice with good access to bikes, trails, water, beach. Unfortunately the sites are on top of each other and very loud."

Water quality varies between lakes: Swimming conditions differ significantly. At Pleasant Lake, one visitor noted, "There is a 'beach' area on the lake. That is made of gravel and a seawall." Another camper at Waterloo Portage Lake commented, "The beach area is very mucky and dirty. Seaweed just flats around and gets tangled around your legs and arms all the time."

Mosquito presence: Insect activity varies by location and season. A visitor at Green Lake Rustic Campground mentioned, "Most sited are shaded and all have a fire ring. Not always 100% level ground but nothing un-tentable. 2 sites probably won't take a trailer but most are fine for small rigs...rear sites sit near a wetland aka the boarder of the mosquito kingdom."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground availability: Lansing Cottonwood Campground offers multiple kid-friendly features. A visitor shared, "There is a large main building and large outdoor pool...Very clean and well kept. Nice Pool and great view. Kayakers and Paddle Boats."

Beach access considerations: Distance from campsites to swimming areas varies. One camper at Waterloo Portage Lake Modern noted, "The vista walkway was across from us, it led right to the beach concessions. The beach walkway is handicap accessible. The fishing pier is new, has two benches and tables for your stuff. It is a bit of a walk to get to but is handicap accessible."

Kid-friendly events: Seasonal activities are scheduled at many campgrounds. A Sleepy Hollow visitor mentioned, "Every year they put together an awesome Halloween trick or treat weekend, but be sure to book the day of six months before because otherwise you will not get a site." Similar events occur at other area campgrounds.

Biking within campgrounds: Paved loops provide safe riding areas for children. A camper at Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern shared, "Spent 4 nights and 5 days camping with my husband and 2 kids. We had fun and the kids had a blast. They rode bikes around the loop and loved swimming and the the playground."

    Tips from RVers

Electric access challenges: Extension cords are necessary at some campgrounds. A visitor to Sleepy Hollow noted, "Most electrical posts are designed to accommodate at least 2 adjoining lots, and as many as 4. This in itself is not a concern until you realize the posts are way too far away to reach without an extension."

Black-topped sites available: Paved areas benefit larger rigs. A camper at Waterloo Portage Lake Modern explained, "We like to stay in the north campground because most of the sites are black topped." These sites provide more stable parking for heavier recreational vehicles.

Limited full hookup options: Water connections aren't universal. One camper at Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern stated, "Absolutely love this place. Only downfall is no water hookups on site." Most campgrounds offer electric-only connections with central water access points.

Campground road congestion: Traffic varies by season and time. A visitor to Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern observed, "Nice beach but super busy on the weekend. Site was a little small for our 38foot - we had to go sideways which opened us up to other campers." Similar challenges exist at other popular campgrounds during peak periods.
