Cabin camping options span across Michigan's eastern region, approximately 25-40 miles from Goodells. The area features a mix of oak forests and lakefront properties with elevations ranging from 580 to 850 feet above sea level. Summer temperatures typically reach 75-85°F during peak cabin rental season, with cooler spring and fall temperatures ranging from 45-65°F.
What to do
Rock collecting on Lake Huron beaches: Lakeport State Park Campground offers exceptional rock hunting opportunities near their cabin accommodations. "I have found the most beautiful Petoskey Stones at Lakeport. I have also found a large pudding stone. My husband brings his chair down to the water and I walk the short for hours and hours looking for rocks," shares Stephanie C.
Enjoy water activities: Jellystone Park North Port Huron combines cabin rentals with extensive water recreation. "Big sites with lots of fun amenities, plenty to do which justifies the high cost," notes David B. The campground features a shallow pool, splash pad, water slides, and sandy beachfront access.
Explore hiking trails: When staying at cabin rentals near Pontiac Lake Recreation Area, take advantage of the trail system. "Nice hike to the lake. Large sites and great biking area," explains Wendy K. The trail network connects to a 1.8-mile path leading to the beach area.
Disc golf courses: Addison Oaks County Park provides cabin accommodations with disc golf nearby. "Tons of trails for hiking and biking. They have kids activities on the weekends, a lake for swimming, great playgrounds and everything is really clean," says Wendy K.
What campers like
Private cabin settings: Cabin renters appreciate the secluded feel at some locations. "The East campground is more open and had 3 small cabins that can be rented. The West camping is more wooded and isolated," notes a reviewer about Pontiac Lake Recreation Area.
Family-oriented amenities: Port Huron KOA provides cabins with abundant family activities. "Lots of trees, cabins, tents and campers welcome. Many shower houses/bathrooms. Jumping pillow, tons of scheduled activities, equipment rentals, trails nearby," explains Melissa B. The campground also features "a movie theater, old one room schoolhouse, camp store, pools, number boats and putt putt."
Seasonal events: Cabin rentals at certain campgrounds offer special programming. "We come for Halloween camping every year! We love this campground. There is a ton to do for all ages. The kids keep busy all day long!" writes Wendy K. about Port Huron KOA.
Clean facilities: Thousand Trails St. Clair cabin guests enjoy well-maintained grounds. "This place is beautiful and we'll absolutely be back! The entire facility was clean and staff couldn't have been friendlier," shares David B.
What you should know
Varying cabin quality: Cabin conditions differ significantly between locations. "We really enjoyed our cabin. The people were very nice. I like the putt putt course and the bouncing pillow," reports Trevor O. about Thousand Trails St. Clair.
Cell service limitations: Some cabin rental locations have connectivity issues. "The only downside was the abysmal Verizon signal. I'm talking 3 mbps bad," notes David B. about Thousand Trails St. Clair.
Reservation requirements: Lakeport State Park Campground cabins book quickly. "This campground is amazing. My suggestion is to book six months in advance because it is extremely hard to get into this campground on the weekends," advises Stephanie C.
Weekend crowding: Certain cabin rental locations become busy during peak periods. "Campground is peaceful during week- due to cabins can be very roudy and crowded on weekends. Owner is very strict but tons of staff always on site to help," explains Lindsey S. about Port Huron KOA.
Tips for camping with families
Bring water shoes: When renting cabins near beaches, pack appropriate footwear. "The beach is rocky so don't forget to pack some water shoes but the rocky beach comes with finding cool rocks to either paint or just collect!" advises Cole G. about Lakeport State Park.
Consider weekday visits: For a quieter cabin experience with children, avoid weekends at busier campgrounds. "My family and I had a great time! We stayed for 3 nights and couldn't really find anything hing to complain about," shares Jon G. about Jellystone Park North Port Huron.
Select cabin location carefully: At larger facilities, cabin positioning matters. "We stayed in the rustic Aspen loop and it was fine for early season but come peak season, the sites lack privacy and are kind of small," notes Ashleigh M. about Holly Recreation Area.
Check beach proximity: Some cabins require transportation to water activities. "Clean campground and well maintained. Two different loops to choose from for camping. Only drawback is the distance from the lake. The lake is not within walking distance, you would need to drive," explains Renee R. about Pontiac Lake Recreation Area.
Tips from RVers
Extension cord requirements: For cabins with electrical hookups, come prepared. "If you are hoping to hook up to electrical, bring extension cords; some hook ups are exceptionally far away from the designated RV parking pad," suggests Mary H. about Pontiac Lake Recreation Area.
Site selection insight: When booking cabins at Groveland Oaks County Park, consider site placement. "Our campsite was a little difficult to get into because it was on a curve and there was a seasonal camper with a Class A right across from our site which didn't allow for a lot of space to maneuver," shares Debbie H.
Pet policy verification: Double-check whether cabins allow pets. "We came here two years ago. My husband suggested the place because his family used to come here when he was a kid. There were many activities for everyone to do, especially for the kids. I don't believe the cabins are pet friendly though," explains Andrea K. about Groveland Oaks County Park.
