      Air conditioning in the bathrooms

Very nice campground with level sites and air conditioned bathrooms! That is amazing in the summer. They have trails that are a nice walk for the dogs and a pond to catch and release fish.

      Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

      Our Favorite

We camp here every year with our family since it is perfectly halfway between us, in Michigan, and my family in Chicago. The kids love the activities and the pool and my family who are not necessarily "outdoorsy" love that they can sleep in an air conditioned cabin with cable! This is an amazing campground!

      Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

      Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

      Amenities include:

      - a community fire pit

      -  game room with television

      - guest laundry

      - dump station

      - gift shop

      - pet friendly options

       -WiFi

      - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

      Very pleasant

Hope, the owner, is always so friendly & helpful. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean. You can get an entire 4 wheeler dump load of wood for $20. It’s nice dry wood. When we’ve camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months. There’s a nice little camp store. We were given a nice welcome packet at check-in with visitor guides for the area. They recycle also. Pool and small miniature golf course. We really enjoy camping here. We’ve camped on several different sites here. We’ve stayed on the deluxe patio sites a couple of times when they were available. They have patio table & chairs on extra wide concrete pad, gas grill, fire pit & seating area in back.

      Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

      Our first KOA

We weren’t sure what to expect given this was our first visit. But overall it was a good experience. Delivery service of food and firewood was great. Trash pickup was appreciated. WiFi reception was a welcomed surprise. Showers and bathrooms were clean. If you go, be sure to reserve one of the sites with the paved patio, pad and provided grill. Very nice. Most importantly, it was very quiet after 9pm when everything closed.

Downside - sites are a little cramped and the pool was very crowded.

      Camp 26

      May 1-5, 2026

site 322, 48 degrees and light drizzle at setup. Site is level, but drops down in the mud and grass, pad is barely wide enough to set up table without being on an angle.

Site barely fits 21’ trailer and RAM 1500

      Cellular T-Mobile 5g, 3bars Electric, 20, 30 and 50 amp.

Bathroom is separate from showers, older but decent. A nice grassy area close to site 322 and 324. Shade and sun Fire pit sits in low area, do expect puddles if raining. Firewood was$8, dry, burned well.

Close to bike/walking trail and a few hundred feet from store. Easy check in, Pokagon is a favorite park of ours as it offers miles of hiking trails.

      One of the Best

      10-2-24 thru 10-7-24 Site 370 C

Cellular, TMOBILE 5G, 3 bars. 21’ Apex Nano w truck. Gravel pad, fire pit and grass is about 12” lower than pad. Keep in mind if expecting rain.

Showers are old, warm with 2 hooks, 2 toilets and 2 urnials.

Fire pit needs to be reset in the ground, it sit too high. Awesome trails to hike. Maintenance was awesome changing out a breaker on the box.

8-27-22, update on site 348 and 350. These are pull through sites on the edge of the road. 350 is longer and had a 5th Wheel on it. We put our 19’ Nano on 348. Full sun during the day, 348 is uneven once you walk off of the pad. This site could use some TLC and more gravel for parking.

10-1-16, nice state park with hiking trails. Lot 322 was partially sun and shade. Restroom and shower(open stall, no privacy) was outdated but functional. 2-5-22 hiked 4 miles on the snow packed trails. Cold and awesome powder conditions.

Regular maintenance ensures comfortable accommodations throughout the camping season.

Privacy between sites: Many campers appreciate the thoughtful layout at Fort Custer that provides natural buffers between camping spots. A review highlights this feature: "We've stayed at both sites listed. 161 you do have neighbors pretty close, but we just stayed at 51 and it is extremely secluded! We had an amazing time tent camping it was so quiet!"

Night sky viewing: The minimal artificial lighting creates optimal conditions for stargazing near Galesburg. The reduced light pollution creates excellent visibility for constellation viewing and astronomical events.

    What you should know

Seasonal availability: While Fort Custer operates year-round, most glamping operations near Galesburg have limited seasons. According to a camper at Hidden Ridge RV Resort, "Hidden Ridge is a modern RV resort within 8 minutes of Gun Lake and sandwiched between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids." Most premium glamping sites operate from April through October with reduced services during shoulder seasons.

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds near Galesburg require advance bookings, especially for premium glamping accommodations. During peak summer weekends, sites often fill 2-3 months in advance. As one visitor noted, "We were in town for a softball tournament and decided to camp for the week."

Insect preparation: The natural environment creates ideal conditions for mosquitoes, particularly in early summer. A camper mentioned, "Lots need mowing so lots of bugs, bring insect repellent." Bug spray with DEET provides effective protection against biting insects during evening hours.

    Tips for camping with families

Accessible recreation: Hungry Horse Campground offers activities specifically designed for children. One family noted, "We have two young girls and they had plenty to do all week during our stay. Multiple playgrounds, toddler pool and regular pool, jump pad, and lots of room to run around." The structured activities provide entertainment options regardless of weather conditions.

The workers are the nicest people I have encountered at a campsite. They have a lake/beach for swimming, kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes to use at the lake." Most swimming areas maintain seasonal lifeguard supervision from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

    Tips from RVers

Utility connections: Pokagon State Park Campground provides electrical hookups but limited sewer connections. According to one RVer, "Sites have electrical service only. Must use the dump station." Plan water usage accordingly when glamping in Galesburg area campgrounds without full hookup service.

Site selection considerations: When making reservations for glamping near Galesburg, Michigan, research specific site dimensions. A camper noted, "Second time here. Sites are shorter and sometimes uneven. Bike trail, hiking trails, store, beach, inn, nature center." Larger RVs require careful site selection to ensure adequate space and leveling options.

Dump station timing: During busy checkout periods, dump stations often develop waiting lines. A visitor suggests, "Since there are no water or sewer hook ups, lines at the dump/fill station can get long." Plan departure timing to avoid peak usage hours, typically between 10 AM and noon on Sundays.
