Sterling State Park campground offers camping sites along Lake Erie, with full hookups available for campers who prefer more amenities. The surrounding area provides flat terrain with elevation changes primarily along the shoreline and wetlands. Camping options near Carleton include sites with varying levels of privacy, with some parks providing more wooded surroundings than others. Weather conditions can change rapidly due to proximity to Lake Erie, with mayflies emerging seasonally.
What to do
Boating and fishing access: Sterling State Park Campground features boat launches for direct Lake Erie access. "There is a boat launch which is extremely popular and the bass and walleye fishing can't be beat. No boat, no problem. The park has several fishing piers as well as a kayak launch into a small inlet which is navigatable all the way to the beach," notes Frances V.
Walking trails and boardwalks: Maumee Bay State Park Campground offers nature exploration through preserved wetlands. "A beautiful and extensive boardwalk constructed by the Ohio Civilian Conservation Corps is available only for foot traffic. Several lakes are good for fishing or boating. Many trails, some grassy and some paved are good for walking, running, and biking," explains Lee D.
Winter camping options: While many parks close seasonally, Camp Lord Willing RV Park operates year-round for those interested in glamping in Carleton, Michigan during colder months. Sites with full hookups remain accessible even when other campgrounds have closed for the season.
What campers like
Large level sites: Campers appreciate the spacious areas at Harbortown RV Resort, where concrete pads provide stable foundations. "All concrete roads and pads. Basketball court, sand volleyball, playground, dog run, batting cages and go karts within walking distance," mentions Bill B., highlighting amenities beyond basic camping.
Clean facilities: Bathroom and shower cleanliness ranks high among camper priorities. "This is a nice, clean and beautiful campground. The employees are very friendly and helpful," reports Albert S. about Camp Lord Willing, while Timothy G. notes about South Bass Island, "Asphalt pads. Good water pressure. Can be muddy after rains and trash dumpster may be far depending on where you are camped."
Privacy between sites: Proud Lake Recreation Area offers camping with natural screening. "One of my favorite things about this campground is that your spots are close together which is great for safety, however with the bushes and brush, it feels super private," shares Kayla H.
What you should know
Site selection matters: At East Harbor State Park Campground, choosing the right area significantly impacts your experience. "The key is site selection at East Harbor...we happened to be in section C which was a newer section of the park. Section C was nice, though in hot sunny days there is very little shade to protect you. The other sections of the park have tall shade trees that work out great," advises Mark S.
Seasonal insect activity: Lake proximity brings insects during warmer months. "Everything great- except may flies! First two nights were perfect but then the may flies hatched (in mid June) and covered everything," reports Kourtney D. about Sterling State Park.
Noise considerations: Proximity to highways affects some campgrounds. "Another big issue is how close it is to the expressway which is noisy and there are trains that go by during the night. There must be a few crossings near by because they blew the horn for 5+ minutes at 4:30am," warns Trent T. about one location.
Tips for camping with families
Water recreation options: Family-friendly water activities provide entertainment beyond traditional camping. Bishop Lake Campground offers multiple options, with one camper noting, "Such a cool place to enjoy with the kids, we had a blast at Jump Island!" Jump Island is an inflatable water park that requires separate admission.
Halloween camping events: South Bass Island State Park Campground and other parks offer special fall activities. "Halloween weekends this place is packed - but empties out Sunday Afternoons. Tons of activities for all ages during the weekends," shares Gordon D., describing the festive atmosphere.
Playground access: Many campgrounds feature play areas for children. "Nice campground- clean with many pull through sites. Nice size pool with enough lounge chairs. Sites feel a bit small but still very nice. Right next to camping is go karts, putt putt and arcade. We had a blast!" reports Beth G.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling requirements: RV campers should prepare for varied site conditions. "Some sites have concrete pads for picnic tables, although the sites in our loop did not. All camper pads are paved and long enough to accommodate large RVs," mentions Lee D. about Maumee Bay.
Hookup availability: Full service sites are limited at many campgrounds. "Sites 1-11 and 21-29 have full hookups (water, sewer, electric)," notes a Maumee Bay camper, while at Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park, "They offer 50 amp full hook-up sites, 50 amp/water, and 30 amp/water sites with pull-thru and back-in options."
Delivery services: Firewood delivery is available at select campgrounds. "Great staff, delivered wood that you have to purchase here," mentions a Harbortown RV Resort visitor, saving campers the hassle of transporting materials.
