Waterloo and Pinckney Recreation Areas provide diverse yurt and cabin options near Brooklyn, Michigan. The two connected park systems span over 25,000 acres of glacial terrain with kettle lakes and moraines. Winter temperatures often drop below freezing, making the wood stove heating in rustic cabins essential during cold-weather camping trips.
What to do
Hiking extensive trails: Access the Waterloo-Pinckney Trail system directly from Green Lake Rustic Campground. "We went on both east and west sides of the waterloo-pickney trail, located off the Campground access road. I believe it was the west trail after Cassidy road we experienced some steep inclines," notes Rebekah J. from Green Lake Rustic Campground.
Mountain biking: The trail system surrounding Pinckney Recreation Area offers challenging terrain for riders. "We loved the trails for Mountain Bikes that are close to the Campsite! They are super fun!!" shares Maria G. The trails connect multiple camping areas throughout the recreation complex.
Kayaking on multiple lakes: Many lakes in the area allow non-motorized boats. "I stayed at #6 and had a beautiful view of the lake. There is muddy lake access on that site and I paddled from there in my kayak. There is an official boat launch nearby," reports Melissa B. about Green Lake. Each lake has different shoreline characteristics and wildlife viewing opportunities.
What campers like
Privacy at rustic sites: Blind Lake Campground offers secluded sites away from the crowds. "We hiked into the blind lake campground and stayed one night. The campsites were very clean and the put toilets were clean. We really appreciated having a water pump near our campsite," notes Bryan T. from Blind Lake Rustic Campground.
Clean facilities: The modern campgrounds maintain high cleanliness standards. "The campground is very well maintained with a nice park and clean bathrooms. The campground has some nice full-grown trees, but isn't extremely wooded," shares Jonah H. about Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern.
Stargazing opportunities: The rural location provides excellent night sky viewing. "We also were able to see some awesome stars at night," mentions Rebekah J. The area between Chelsea and Brooklyn has minimal light pollution compared to nearby urban centers, making yurt camping near Brooklyn, Michigan ideal for astronomy enthusiasts.
What you should know
Reservation system changes: Many rustic sites now require advance booking. "While you technically don't need a reservation, we made our reservations through the DNR website about a month in advance. The campsite was listed as 'full' when we arrived, so I was glad we took the extra step," advises Alaine S. about Green Lake Rustic.
Site selection matters: Not all campsites offer the same amenities or privacy. "The sites are generously sized, with room to stretch out. There isn't much privacy between sites, with a few exceptions, but this campsite is so quiet and well-behaved that it didn't end up mattering much," reports Alaine S.
Insect preparation: Holiday RV Campground and other sites in the area can have significant mosquito populations. "Great campground with polite and helpful staff. Don't pass this one up. Just needs more grass. Our spot was really patchy and resulted in a lot of mud," notes Sean N., highlighting how wet areas can increase insect activity.
Tips for camping with families
Playground options: Multiple recreation areas have child-friendly facilities. "Facilities were nice and clean and many sites had trees to give shade at certain times of day. They rode bikes around the loop and loved swimming and the playground," shares Kim S. about her family's experience at Waterloo Sugarloaf.
Swimming beaches: Bishop Lake Campground provides safe swimming areas for children. "Nice lake for swimming and can take your pet as well! Big playground and nice bathrooms," reports Mary O. The beach areas typically have shallow entry points suitable for younger swimmers.
Bike-friendly loops: Many campgrounds feature paved roads for beginning cyclists. "Spent 4 nights and 5 days camping with my husband and 2 kids. We had fun and the kids had a blast. They rode bikes around the loop and loved swimming and the playground," mentions Kim S., highlighting how the campground layout supports family activities.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: Hell Creek Ranch Campground offers varied terrain for different rig sizes. "Great private campground with rustic, elec, water/elec (30 amp), and concrete pad sites. Very clean campground with nice shower house. Owners are very friendly," reports Jason F. The concrete pad sites require less leveling work upon arrival.
Limited hookups: Not all sites have full connections. "Absolutely love this place. Only downfall is no water hookups on site," notes Martin W. about Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern. RVers should arrive with filled fresh water tanks when booking electric-only sites in the area.
Proximity to dump stations: Plan bathroom usage accordingly. "The one thing that was bit unnerving was that throughout both campgrounds, there are sites on the outer edge that are next to a main road with nothing but a small, wooden split-rail fence dividing the state park from the outside world," observes Ari A. about a nearby state park, noting the limited privacy for some sites.
