Young State Park Campground welcomes pets throughout its 560-acre property on Lake Charlevoix, just three miles from Boyne City. Dogs must remain leashed in all camping areas, including the Oak, Spruce, and Terrace loops. Whiting Park Campground also permits pets with similar leash requirements and provides convenient access to Lake Charlevoix. Both campgrounds feature designated pet walking areas away from swimming beaches where dogs are prohibited. The campground roads provide good walking routes for exercising dogs. Sites at Young State Park include fire pits, picnic tables, and electrical hookups, with water spigots scattered throughout the camping loops. The park's pet policies are strictly enforced, especially during busy summer weekends when the campground reaches full capacity.

Hiking trails throughout Young State Park offer excellent opportunities for dog walking, though some trails become overgrown during summer months. Nearby Avalanche Park in Boyne City provides additional pet-friendly hiking options with stairs leading to panoramic lake views. Boyne City features an off-leash dog park for pets needing more exercise space than campgrounds provide. When planning camping trips with pets, visitors should note that summer temperatures can reach uncomfortable levels for dogs left at campsites. The nearby towns of Charlevoix, East Jordan, and Petoskey offer veterinary services and pet supply stores within a 20-minute drive. Petoskey State Park and Fisherman's Island State Park also allow pets in designated camping areas but enforce strict on-leash policies throughout their grounds. During peak season, early reservations are essential as pet-friendly sites fill quickly.

      Young State Park Campground

      Young State Park.

Here’s what we really liked about this park … it sits on beautiful Lake Charlevoix, is just a few miles away from the super cute town of Boyne City, some campsites with access to water right out of their back door, and the park has lots of beach to enjoy. Young State Park has a typical rustic campground feel. The park covers 560 acres which encompasses a campground, hiking trails, a large beach area with concessions, boat launch (located in the Terrace Campground loop), picnic area, playground, baseball diamond, basketball courts, and fishing pier.

Reservations can be made on-line via the Michigan DNR site. The advantage of making reservations online is that you get a really good description of the site which includes length, width, hook-ups, amount of shade, length of site, distance to restrooms, and best of all - pictures.  We visited Young State Park in the summer but in talking to locals this place is wonderful in the winter and great for cross-country skiing with trails that wind through wooded areas. The price ranges from $20 to $33 per night depending on the season and electric hook-ups.

There are three camping loops – Terrace, Spruce, and Oak.  Campsites in the Spruce loop don’t have a designated “pad” so you can arrange your RV or tent any way you like. This was the case with groups of friends who had two or three sites and arranged them so they faced each other with a common area in the center. The Terrace and Oak loops have less sites and seem a little quieter. The other plus of these loops is the easy access to water (some of which have great water views). All campsites are a mix of 20/30/50 amp or 20/30 amp with water spigots scattered throughout the loop. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit (firewood is for sale in the campground on the honor system with the nice thing being that you have access any time of day to purchase it).

The pros about this park are the easy access to Lake Charlevoix and being just a few miles from Boyne City (which has a great weekly farmers market, delicious food and beer at 7 Monks Tap Room, and a weekly Friday “Stroll the Streets” with live music). The park has a large beach area with a camp store/concession stand that has food and items for rent. It is really convenient that you can rent beach chairs/umbrellas/watercraft instead of having to bring them. Behind the concession stand is a fishing pier that was really popular with the kids.

The cons are that the roads in the campground are pretty narrow and when someone was backing into their site it caused a traffic jam.  Sites are close together and the park has a very crowded feel. The bath/showers are not large enough for the amount of campers in the park and despite being cleaned daily they got lots of use and were always busy and by the end of the day, they were pretty dirty.

      Wooden Shoe Campground

Great place to relax and enjoy the water.

Wooden Shoe Campground in Ellsworth, Michigan is a small campground set on a hill above Ellsworth Lake. This park is great if you want to sometime explore Michigan’s waterways. When we visited the park, it was about 25% full which made it very quiet and relaxing. There are some great sites that overlook the lake that are inviting for an evening fire and enjoying a pleasant view.

The park has 45 RV sites with water, 30 amp electric, cable TV, and internet. There are seven designated tent sites in a heavily wooded area with some glimpses of the lake. Some sites have a nice amount of shade while those towards the front of the park are more open and have a better water view. Picnic tables and fire pits are at each site. The main road throughout the park is paved, in good condition, and easily navigable with even large RV. There is a dump station at the entrance of the park that is easy to get in and out of. A camp host is on site. The price per night to stay here is $25 and they offer a super inexpensive price of $125/week. Reservations can be made by emailing a reservation request or calling the city.

The town of Ellsworth is quite small with a couple of shops and restaurant or two. The quaint coastal town of Charlevoix is 10 minutes away where you will find plenty of shopping, restaurants, a pretty harbor, weekly live music (in the summer), a farmers market and really great library with a large room that has a great selection of books for sale for a few bucks. The towns of Boyne City and Boyne Falls are about 20 miles away and also worth visiting if you have the time. For dog owners, Boyne city has an off-leash dog park and Boyne Falls has a large ski resort that is perfect for walking dogs in the summer.  The larger town of Petoskey is about a 45 minute drive but well worth a visit.

If you want to “get away” and enjoy water activities this is a good place to come. There is a canoe/kayak boat launch just down the hill from the park that puts you in a narrow stretch of water that connects Lakes Ellsworth and Saint Clair. A short (approximately 1 mile) paddle into Lake Saint Claire lands you in a beautiful nature preserve administered by the Little Traverse Conservancy.  Be sure to visit Friske’s Orchard which has a fruit stand, bakery with pizza and sandwiches, general store and petting zoo and is only six miles away on Rt. 31.

The good things about this park are the price, access to pretty water for kayaking/canoeing/fishing and the view from some of the sites. You are not too far from some of northern Michigan’s most popular towns yet only paying $25 night. The small size of this park gives it a quieter feel than some of the nearby state parks that have hundreds of sites. When we were there about half the campers appeared to be seasonal who come to enjoy the boating and fishing. Many of these people were not there during the week which made the park super quiet.

A couple dings for this park are that many of the sites are not level and even pitching a tent can be difficult. The bathroom/shower facilities are old and run down. The main bathhouse is located in the front of the park with port-a-potty’s scattered about. Some of the sites are close together and give a crowded feeling.

Overall, I would say this is an average park which is why it gets three stars.

      Young State Park Campground

      Location, location, location

The neat thing about Young State Park is its site on Lake Charlevoix. Three miles away is the lovely and cute town of Boyne City.

This is a typical state park campground designed to pack in the numbers. Sites are close to one another, no to little vegetation between the sites. Not much comfort for tent camping. The shower houses are not large for the number of campers and despite daily cleaning, there's a lot of use. By the end of the day, early evening, it's a bit dirty. There are lots of other things going for it that includes hiking trails, boating, beach area with concessions, picnic areas and playgrounds.

Location, location, location. In addition to easy access to Lake Charlevoix, there's traveling through the other quaint towns that include East Jordan (where the manhole covers were cast), Ironton (where you cross the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix on a ferry) and of course, Charlevoix.

Nearby, Boyne City has developed nicely over the past few years. The town's supporters are doing a great job of sustaining this village. Seven years ago, it was a fine little town that seemed to "get along" with its harbor and a couple restaurants. Now, its center has many nice and newer restaurants and pubs, a great weekly farmers market and weekly summer events with a really nice, spacious town park on the lakeside. A grocery store is also located here, with a Starbucks inside for those who have to have it.

      Young State Park Campground

      One of our favorites

We live relatively close but this is by far our favorite state park for a quick getaway. Some of the spots are a little close, but the park makes up for it with it’s amazing beach and proximity to Boyne City.

      Whiting County Park Campground

      Visit in July 2018

A decent campground on Lake Charlevoix halfway between Charlevoix and Boyne City. Most campsites have some tree coverage and campsites are packed pretty close together. Bathrooms were pretty nice. The campground has a decent beach as well.

Young State Park on the north side of the lake is a better option with nicer amenities, but it can fill up quick in peak season.

While in the area, make sure to check out Avalanche Park in Boyne City and hike up the stairs for a great view of the lake.

      Young State Park Campground

      Camping on Lake Charlevoix

We stayed for a week at Young State Park in September of 2020. Our site was at the end of a row and we enjoyed a decent amount of space for a truck and trailer, 30 amp service, and AT&t cell service. (I ended up needing to use Teledoc :( and my husband was able to turn on the hotspot and laptop and use the web.) The site is dirt but was level.

Some sites were not in use because of high lake levels and park water problems. Leaking pipe? The small dune area leading up to Lake Charlevoix makes you feel like you are at Lake Michigan. We saw some beautiful sunsets from the edge of the water. There are a walkway and observation platform. There is some hiking, a place to walk your dog, swimming, and bathhouses. We used the campground as a base to explore surrounding towns like Boyne City and Charlevoix, but mostly for kayaking. It was very quiet during the week and was packed on Friday and Saturday nights. The fall color was building toward a peak and the scattered maple trees mixed with cedar made it very pretty. We would stay again in the offseason.

      Young State Park Campground

      Busy but lots to offer

This campground has so much to offer, some of those things include a nice Beach, small store, fishing, paths, great location with a nice bike ride to downtown Boyne city. My only concern was the condition of the hiking trails. This park actually covers a ton of land and they advertise all the hiking trails that they have, but last summer we tried to hike it and it was hardly marked and so overgrown the trail just disappeared in the tall marsh grass, it hadn't been managed in a very long time, luckily we had GPS. The sites can be very close to your neighbor, so must be a people person and know that kids will be noisy, all night. There's a more rustic secluded section for camping where the sites aren't as close and there's actually trees. Despite those things, this campground is super nice and convenient for all needs and activities.

      Traverse City State Park Campground

Great Proximity to Downtown, Beach, and Breweries.

The location of this campground is great and it's best feature in my opinion! This park is just two miles to downtown Traverse City (one of Michigan’s most popular resort towns), a quarter mile from a pretty beach and the beautiful blue waters of Lake Michigan, and it sits along the TART Trail which is a 10.5-mile bicycle trail running through the city.

While the park is small at just 47 acres, it holds pretty many campsites – approximately 350 (and two cabins). Campsites are set among tall pine trees so there is a bit of shade but that also means that they are sandy with little grass. Roads are paved and narrow if you are trying to maneuver with a large (40+ RV) and you may have difficulty backing into your site with the numerous trees lining the road. All sites are back-in with electric. Sites and patios are sandy with varying degrees of levelness. There is a dump station and water spigots are scattered throughout the campground. Picnic tables and fire pits are at each site. Sites are $31/night ($49/night for the cabins) and reserveable online.

This park is right on US-31/M-72 which means there is easy access in and out but it can be noisy if your campsite is close to the road. Expect the campground to be very busy on weekends and in the summer and tightly packed.

Amenities include: picnic area, beach, fishing, hiking/bicycling trail, three bathhouses, playground area, camp store, pet walk (no off-leash dog park).

Outside of the park there is a lot to do in Traverse City. Early July is the ever-popular Cherry Festival which lasts for a week. But you better book your campsite early if you want to enjoy all the festivities (which happen to be close to the park). The summer farmers market is great and held every Wednesday and Saturday. Early in the season, asparagus is plentiful and locally-grown asparagus is the best you will ever have being super sweet, tender, and inexpensive. For beer drinkers, consider paddling the beer trail that takes you from Boardman Lake to Lake Michigan and past numerous breweries where you pull over for a pint. If it's ice cream you want, you have come to the right place. There are multiple creameries with Moomer's being our favorite and for some reason eating it right at the farm stand was the best.

      Gaylord KOA

      Horrible

The owners were constantly driving around and correcting people. Rules are okay but they were over the top. They would even stop and just stare at our site while we sat outside.. it was very odd. Also not kept up at all. The playground was old and my 30 lb dog slipped out from under the “dog park” fence because it was so high off the ground where they were allowed to be unleashed, luckily we got her and she’s ok.

    Guide to Boyne City

Lake Charlevoix offers 17,260 acres of clear water along northern Michigan's glacial terrain with depths reaching 122 feet in some areas. Camping options near Boyne City provide access to this inland lake connected to Lake Michigan through a channel at Charlevoix. Summer temperatures average 75-80°F during day and can drop to 50-55°F at night.

    What to do

Trail exploration at Fisherman's Island State Park: Six miles of Lake Michigan shoreline perfect for searching Petoskey stones. "One of the most popular activities in the park is searching for Petoskey stones known for their beautiful honey-comb like pattern. These are actually not stones but pieces of coral that existed in warmer waters that covered the land hundreds of millions of years ago," notes Nancy W. from Fisherman's Island State Park Campground.

Biking on Little Traverse Wheelway: This 23.5-mile paved trail connects Harbor Springs to Charlevoix. "A short walk across the Little Traverse Wheelway bike trail that stretches 23.5 miles from Harbor Springs to Charlevoix, put you on a small sandy beach begging you to find a few of the elusive Petoskey stones," according to Patrick S. from Magnus Park Campground.

Boating on Lake Charlevoix: Multiple boat launches provide access to the lake. "Park covers 560 acres which encompasses a campground, hiking trails, a large beach area with concessions, boat launch (located in the Terrace Campground loop), picnic area, playground, baseball diamond, basketball courts, and fishing pier," explains Nancy W. about Young State Park Campground.

    What campers like

Proximity to local towns: Many campgrounds offer convenient access to area communities. "The park is located just south of the town of Charlevoix. This is a charming coastal town with a beautiful harbor set on Lake Charlevoix with a picturesque lighthouse," writes Nancy W. about Fisherman's Island State Park Campground.

Lake Michigan beaches: Several campgrounds offer Great Lakes shoreline access. "Huge park with three sections. Terrace is the best but hard to get. Lake side sites. Nice facilities and camp store. Lake Charlevoix sunsets rival the Caribbean. Breathtaking," explains Tracie S. from Young State Park.

Petoskey stone hunting: This unique fossil activity draws many visitors. "The beach is really nice and looks like the ocean. The water is very clear and has lots of small colorful pebbles and Petoskey rocks. We enjoyed walking up and down the beach looking for these fossils," reports John K. from Petoskey State Park Campground.

    What you should know

Campground layouts vary significantly: Some parks have multiple loops with different characteristics. "There are three camping loops – Terrace, Spruce, and Oak. Campsites in the Spruce loop don't have a designated 'pad' so you can arrange your RV or tent any way you like," explains Nancy W. about Young State Park.

Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds operate May through October. "Fall camped here. First time and it lived up to all the good reviews! Absolutely beautiful fall colors throughout the campground," shares Kathie M. about Fisherman's Island State Park Campground.

Site conditions: Ground conditions can affect camping comfort. "Sites are level, paved and had a paved patio and was full hook-up with cable and WiFi (which worked well at our site)," notes Nancy W. about Petoskey KOA.

    Tips for camping with families

Waterfront activities: Look for sites with beach access. "Barnes County Park Campground right on Lake Michigan. Great for kids, as a sand bar goes out quite a distance. Ring road through the park is quiet enough to bike around, and there are many hiking paths to choose from," advises Rachel M. from Barnes County Park Campground.

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas. "Very friendly staff and clean park. Family friendly and pet friendly, beach was close by and clean," reports Jodi L. about Young State Park.

Educational opportunities: Some parks offer organized activities. "Camp ranger, crafts, and beach area for the kids. Very clean," mentions Jami M. about Young State Park.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection matters: RV sites vary significantly in size and layout. "Young State Park has a typical rustic campground feel... The advantage of making reservations online is that you get a really good description of the site which includes length, width, hook-ups, amount of shade, length of site, distance to restrooms, and best of all - pictures," explains Nancy W.

Seasonal timing: Off-season visits may provide better experience. "We were here for the halloween weekend. They did a great job with the trick or treating by shutting down all vehicle traffic and by having a site decorating contest," notes Craig F. from Petoskey KOA.

Navigating campground roads: Road conditions can be challenging for larger rigs. "The cons are that the roads in the campground are pretty narrow and when someone was backing into their site it caused a traffic jam," warns Nancy W. about Young State Park.
