RV camping near York Harbor, Maine provides access to southern coastal Maine and New Hampshire beaches. Most regional campgrounds operate from April through mid-October when temperatures range from 50-80°F during camping season. Summer rainfall averages 3-4 inches monthly, with frequent coastal fog that can linger until mid-morning before clearing to sunny afternoons.
What to do
Beach access timing: At Saco Old Orchard Beach KOA, campers can utilize the summer beach shuttle. "The campground sits among tall pine trees which offer nice shade helps alleviate some of the feel of a crowded campground. In the summer there is a shuttle that takes you to the beach which is convenient. During the shoulder season dogs are allowed on the beach but not the summer."
Coastal wildlife viewing: Visit nearby conservation areas accessible from most campgrounds. "A great place to explore is Rachael Carson National Wildlife Refuge. There is a small welcome center and trails that wind through the marsh with some beautiful views (and dog-friendly). If you like to paddle, head to the Saco River Marsh."
Seasonal activities: Wild Acres Sun RV Resort offers varied options depending on when you visit. "Very big complex and sites are close together. If you like privacy and more of a camping experience, this is not the place. However, it has walkable beach access, and the kids loved the heated pool. Bathrooms are clean. We stayed a weekday night and over the weekend and the weekend was crazy busy."
What campers like
Pool facilities: Cole's Mine RV Resort receives consistent praise for its swimming amenities. "This place is well payed out and very well taken care of. The pool is heated and has an amazing water slide and themed. We had a blast and plan on visiting again next year!!"
Site spacing: Despite the region's generally tight sites, some exceptions exist. "This is one of my top campgrounds visited. The close location to dining, motorcycle rides, wide/grassy sites and quietness all contribute to a very good stay. If you want shade, not much but you have plenty of space to just sit on your other side of your RV and use that for shade."
Seasonal atmosphere: Campers appreciate changing vibes throughout the camping season. "We have been camping at Wild Acres for over 10 years. We were even seasonal for awhile. There is so much for everyone to do. We will however, never return on Labor Day weekend - way too noisy and quiet hours were not respected (like people partying until 4am)."
What you should know
Site layouts: Many campgrounds feature unconventional arrangements. At Thousand Trails Moody Beach, "The campground layout is quite unusual, with campers parked lengthwise along the road. This means that you share the space where you sit outside with the camper behind you, resulting in very little privacy. It feels cramped, and you're constantly close to your neighbors."
Backing challenges: Large RVs may encounter difficulties at some parks. "The roads in the park are fairly narrow and we had to drive over the grass across from our site in order to back in. Lucky for us nobody was parked in that site. We hate driving over grass as our coach can really make some ruts, but we had no choice in this situation."
Seasonal differences: Campgrounds change significantly between peak and off-season. "We were there in the off-season(May) and didn't have any neighbors so it was pretty quiet. There are not too many amenities in the park which was fine for us since we really don't use them."
Tips for camping with families
Entertainment options: Beach Rose RV Park offers multi-generational appeal. "We had just one night here and loved it. Felt so welcomed by the hosts. Lovely clean site. It's a 50 site campground and built 20 years ago, so it's cozy small sites in some spots. But for the money of your from out of state it's cheaper then the state park down the street."
Off-peak family visits: Consider timing to avoid crowds. "This is mostly an Rv Park. Really nice for RV, Van or trailers. You could definitely bike to the beach. No complaints!"
Child-friendly amenities: Look for campgrounds with dedicated spaces. "We took our family of 5, and my mom for a weekend getaway! It was perfect. So much to do. Very quiet at night, which is helpful in such a family environment. We will definitely be back again!"
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: At Tuxbury Pond RV Campground, site choice affects experience. "We stayed here for a week, our site was large with full hookups and the area was very clean, some sites in other sections are closer together. There are lots of seasonal campers so if you don't like that atmosphere this is probably not the place for you. It's a great base for sightseeing."
Utility positions: Check hookup locations when booking. "The facilities are ok but dated and could be cleaner. The beach is a short 15-minute walk. For children, there is a swimming pool, a basketball court and a small playground."
Reservation timing: Book early for prime summer months. "Mostly seasonal who have been there a long time. Pool is clean. This campground is very kid-friendly so if that is not your thing don't come in the summer."
