RV sites near Saco, Maine offer both oceanside access and wooded retreats depending on seasonal timing. The area sits at the confluence of the Saco River and Atlantic Ocean, with most campgrounds operating May through October. Summer temperatures average 75°F during peak season when campgrounds regularly reach full capacity.
What to do
Beach trips from camp: Wild Acres Sun RV Resort provides convenient beach access via a short walk. "More of a festival than an RV resort. Extremely crowded, close sites, and heavy car traffic in walking and bike areas. Trolley access to the beach area was great and people are friendly," notes David A.
Kayaking the Scarborough Marsh: Wild Duck Adult Campground & RV Park borders the marsh with water access. "This adult only campground is peaceful and quiet, with the sounds of birds and the trees being the main thing you hear - it is quite relaxing," according to Heather C. The campground is within a mile of the Audubon center where kayak rentals are available.
Eastern Trail biking: Located 1.3 miles from the multi-use gravel Eastern Trail path. Kevin W. reports, "My wife and I enjoy riding our bikes on rail trails. This quiet campground is about a mile from the Eastern Trail through the Scarborough Marsh."
What campers like
Heated pools: Cole's Mine RV Resort and Campground features a standout pool area. "Super fun pool and a small campground so not many people crowding the pool. Many nice fishing spots and lots of play areas and outdoor recreation," shares Samantha N.
Adult-only camping options: Some campers prefer the quieter atmosphere at adults-only properties. "This is a beautiful campground that caters to adults only. It feels very secluded but it's close to everything. The tent sites are pretty close to each other but we had no issues with noise," states Kelli T.
Restaurant access: Many campers appreciate on-site food options. "One of the nice features was the on-site restaurant which claims to be famous for their 'blueberry pancakes' and also offers Belgian waffles, pizza, hamburgers, and hot dogs. I admit the pancakes were delicious and loved eating them campfire side," writes Nancy W. about Sun Outdoors Saco Old Orchard Beach.
What you should know
Train noise considerations: Sites near the beach often come with railroad proximity. Bryan notes, "The campground map is missing the train tracks that are between the campground and the ocean. The trains all blow there horn and you will hear it if your at one of the site 'by the ocean'."
Site spacing variation: Campground layouts differ significantly in the Saco region. "The 30 amp sites are very close together. The campground layout is quite unusual, with campers parked lengthwise along the road. This means that you share the space where you sit outside with the camper behind you, resulting in very little privacy," reports Arno W. about Thousand Trails Moody Beach.
Mosquito activity: Being near marshland means insect protection is essential. "The only negative of this place was the mosquitoes. They were TERRIBLE. In the time it took after we parked the camper, to when I could dig the bug spray out of our truck I was covered in bites," warns Megan W.
Tips for camping with families
Quiet times vary: Family-focused camping areas have different evening atmospheres. "We stayed 3 nights at the beginning of summer and had a fantastic vacation. No one wanted to leave, we had so much fun! Quiet hours were not regulated and although we did appreciate being able to sit at the fire past 11, the drunk people walking and driving golf carts around was a bit much," explains Erin M.
Kids' activity options: Shamrock Campground offers family-oriented programming. "Owners are so nice. Camping spots are a bit cramped. We have a huge tent. But everyone was. Super nice. Kids had a blast with Friday and Saturday movie nights," says leona.
Pool considerations: Different campgrounds maintain varied pool policies. "They have three pools which their main pool has their own hot tub for adults as well as two for children," notes Tammie M., while Laura C. adds, "We stayed in a pop-up while my mother rented a cabin. We loved that were able to stay right next to each other and were still in nice wooded sites with an awesome space for the fire."
Tips from RVers
Paved roads preferred: Sea-Vu West Premier RV Resort offers smooth surfaces for families. "Roads are paved so kids can ride their bikes with ease. Place is very clean and close to the beech. Staff is very friendly and accommodating," notes nick.
Site orientation matters: Select sites away from high-traffic areas when possible. "This is one of my top campgrounds visited. The close location to dining, motorcycle rides, wide/grassy sites and quietness all contribute to a very good stay. The staff are very friendly and helpful if needed," Susan J. explains.
Strategic reservation timing: Several RVers recommend making winter reservations for prime summer spots, especially for oceanview locations. "We have been camping at Wild Acres for over 10 years. We were even seasonal for awhile. There is so much for everyone to do. We will however, never return on Labor Day weekend - way too noisy and quiet hours were not respected," advises Lowiejean.
