The Schoodic Peninsula section of Acadia National Park operates on a different rhythm than its Mount Desert Island counterpart, and Schoodic Woods Campground embodies this quieter pace. Located about an hour's drive from Bar Harbor's crowds, this 200-site campground opened in 2015 on former naval base land, offering both drive-up sites with hookups and primitive hike-in options.
Two distinct loops serve different camping styles. Loop A features smaller sites better suited for tents and compact RVs, while Loop B provides spacious pull-through sites that can accommodate rigs up to 70 feet. B M. notes that "Loop A the sites weren't as nice or as big and most not private," while praising Loop B's privacy and size. Most sites include electrical hookups, with some offering water connections as well.
The campground's restroom facilities draw consistent praise from visitors. Multiple buildings feature flush toilets, running water, and exterior dishwashing stations with dedicated areas for trash, recycling, and food scraps. However, no shower facilities exist on-site, requiring campers to seek alternatives in nearby Winter Harbor or come prepared with portable options. WiFi access centers around the visitor center and some bathroom areas.
Hiking trails radiate directly from the campground, including a mile-long path to the bay. The six-mile Schoodic Loop Road provides scenic coastal driving and cycling, passing Schoodic Point where waves crash against granite ledges. Sarah S. found the bathrooms "probably the nicest and cleanest I've ever been to at a campground" and appreciated how sites "were large and private."
Reservations open 60 days in advance and fill quickly during peak season from late May through October. Sites range from $22 for hike-in spots to $60 for group areas. For additional camping options in the region, see campgrounds around Winter Harbor. This campground suits campers who prioritize space, cleanliness, and access to Acadia's less-traveled landscapes over convenience amenities.
