We had a wonderful couple of nights here. I highly recommend the lean-to’s. The bathrooms were clean and the coin-operated showers were great. Each site was neatly maintained. Above all else, the staff here was phenomenal.
Bass River has become my go-to destination for quick weekend getaways. The south shore campground has a ton of sites with varying degrees of privacy, but all are easy to get to and within a short walk of the restrooms.
The staff at this location is fantastic. I wanted to make some adjustments to my reservation and they took care of everything without issue. The only noise you’ll get is from Stage Road, but it doesn’t have a continuous flow of traffic, especially at night. Amenities nearby include Walmart, Tractor Supply and Wawa, all within a 10-minute drive. I haven’t done much hiking here, but they do have a few great trails.
Overall, this a great campground for just about anyone.
This was definitely a unique camping experience for me. The forest is absolutely beautiful, but not by any design. Instead, nature is just doing its thing. Sand roads crisscross the whole area and navigation can be a bit tricky the first time around.
The campgrounds are clean and simple. Some reviews mentioned that the borders between sites are a bit murky, which I agree with. In the larger loop, one site easily blends into another. I stayed in the smaller loop (1-13), which was simple and a bit more private. The bathrooms nearby were immaculately clean, which hasn’t been the case at many other state campgrounds. There was some occasional road noise, but nothing that kept me up at night. However, there was some low flying air traffic going in to the joint base nearby. It wasn’t terrible, but it was definitely noticeable.
In a pinch, there’s a Wawa about 5 minutes away from the campground. Beyond that, there’s a bar and a gas station a bit further away. Anything else is a bit of a hike. If you want to get away and feel like you’re truly in nature, this is a good spot to visit.
Bass River is definitely a spot that I’ll come back to again and again. It’s easily accessible from the Garden State Parkway, the staff is very friendly and very helpful, the whole property is gorgeous and there are great amenities nearby.
I gave 4 out of 5 stars because the bathrooms are an absolute disaster. That said, we only used one of the buildings (closest to our site) and there were multiple bathroom buildings on the south shore campground. I’m hoping that the construction on the nor shore campground addresses this issue.
While there isn’t a ton of privacy, there is a little more space than you’d find at other campgrounds. We could definitely hear other people, but we didn’t see them much. Road noise was occasionally noticeable, but it was never a problem. In less than 10 minutes, you can be back in civilization with plenty of food and drink options nearby, not to mention a Walmart Supercenter.
Being here over Memorial Day weekend wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it could be. I’ll come back again over the summer and fall.
This place is amazing! While it’s easy to find and easy enough to access, it’s also tucked into a quiet corner of the state, providing plenty of privacy and enjoyment.
We tent camped in site #16 on the south end of the property, right on the Delaware River. I don’t think I’ve ever been on a site with so much privacy. The bathrooms and showers are located in a building that’ll take all of two minutes to walk to. Both the bathrooms and showers need an update, but they were mostly clean and functional during our stay.
Everything on the south end of the property is nestled against the river. On the north end, the property opens up and there’s more space, but less privacy. Either way, it’s a gorgeous setting.
Belleplain is easy to get to, but it’s just remote enough that you’ll truly feel like you’re getting the outdoor experience. Make sure you have a map of the site handy, as it can be hard to navigate with the foliage and lack of marked roadways.
The staff was completely absent when we tried to check in, so we went right to the site. Finding the site was difficult because the leaves had fallen and covered the roads. It was a little tricky, but no major issue. We had some privacy, but for the most part, the sites are open to each other. I recommend staying by the lake.
The closest bathrooms were closed, so we had to drive a few minutes to a different set. That got annoying. Also, there is absolutely nowhere to leave your trash, so be prepared to pack in and pack out.
We came back to Schoodic one year after our first trip, so we knew what to expect. The grounds are still gorgeous and the sites are immaculate. The problem at Schoodic is the staff. One staff member was fantastic. She was polite, helpful, warm and knowledgeable. Everyone else complained about being overworked, under staffed and just about everything else they could complain about. One of the volunteers has a god complex and he loves to show it off. We had an issue with our setup and instead of explaining the issue and providing an alternative, he acted like an overzealous teen and got confrontational. I remembered him from our previous trip because of the same behavior.
Another issue we encountered were the bathrooms. At multiple points, there was no water pressure, so we couldn’t wash our hands or use the toilets. Aside from that, the bathrooms were frequently dirty. And to top it off, they still don’t have shower facilities anywhere on the site, nor do they have them in the area. Camp showers are prohibited and the closest paid shower facility is 70 minutes by car. This is where Schoodic has really failed.
I would love to return, but I don’t want to go several days without showering while also having to deal with disgruntled staff members and volunteers.
Stokes is nestled in a beautiful part of New Jersey and it’s just remote enough that you can get away from the crowds and activity while still being in a short driving distance of restaurants, grocery stores, etc. We stayed at Lake Ocquittunk, which was a little disappointing. The site itself (T001) was absolutely massive and stunningly beautiful. Unfortunately, when the site was cleared, trees were cut down to the stump and the stumps were just left there. This posed both a tripping hazard and a driving hazard. You have to weave your way around the various stumps and small boulders protruding from the ground in all lighting conditions. The site is on a gentle slope, which made it difficult to find a level area for the tent, but we found a spot that suited us perfectly. The campground overall needs some improvement. It almost felt neglected or abandoned. The bathrooms weren’t great, but I’ve seen much worse. The park staff were incredibly helpful and generous with time and information. Directions were easy to follow and we felt comfortable staying there. Ultimately, we would gladly return in the future, but we might visit in a warmer season.
We really enjoyed this park for tent camping. Our site was right on the river with incredible views and a good deal of privacy. They sell firewood on the honor system and it’s centrally located to the campsites. The check-in time of 4:00 is a bit late, and when we arrived, we found someone occupying our reserved site. They promptly moved out when we mentioned the reservation. The “good” bathrooms were a bit disappointing, and I’d advise everyone to steer clear of the composting toilets near the parking lot. Cell service with AT&T was fine, but if you have Verizon, you’re out of luck. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We’ll definitely return in the future.
This place could have been halfway decent if the people running it showed the slightest bit of interest. The campsites are mostly good. The bathrooms need to be clean and they rarely were, especially when two of the three stalls were covered in vomit. The staff is astoundingly rude, and I’m told that goes with the region. There was absolutely no interest in enforcing rules, namely, quiet hours. People at the site next to ours started setting up at 10:00pm. They were still noisy after midnight. And then, the garbage truck started picking up the bear-proof dumpsters at 5:00am. That was a joy to wake up to. I’m fine with bare bones camping. This was just a disappointment across the board.
