CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Fontainebleau State Park Campground and Abita Springs RV Resort provide cabin accommodations near Madisonville with varying amenities. Cabins typically feature electricity, running water, and basic furniture including beds and tables. Most locations offer air conditioning for summer comfort and heating for winter stays. Bathrooms are available either within the cabins or in nearby facilities depending on the campground. "The cabins were damaged by Hurricane Ida and are currently unusable," noted one visitor to Fontainebleau, though restoration efforts are ongoing. Kitchen setups vary by location, with some offering full cooking facilities while others provide only basic refrigeration and microwave access.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Fontainebleau State Park offers more traditional log-style accommodations, while private facilities like Hidden Oaks Family Campground feature more modern cabin rentals. Most cabins require advance reservations, particularly during peak summer months when availability becomes limited. Pet policies differ between campgrounds—some cabins are pet-friendly with additional fees, while others prohibit pets entirely. According to one camper, "We saw deer in the campground!" highlighting the wildlife viewing opportunities from cabin doorsteps at certain locations.

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Basic cooking supplies are often provided, though specifics vary widely between properties. Several campgrounds maintain on-site markets or camp stores with essential provisions, including firewood and basic groceries. Visitors to Land-O-Pines Family Campground and Adventures RV Resort (formerly Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park) can access market facilities without leaving the property. For longer stays, bringing additional supplies from home is recommended as on-site options may be limited or higher-priced than nearby towns.

Natalabany Creek Campground and RV Park

    RV'S AND CABINS ONLY

This campground is for RV's and Cabin rentals only. This park has lots of things to keep the kiddo's occupied. There is a HUGE pond for catch and release fish (no swimming or boating). There is an arcade room, swimming pool, putt putt golf, and a really great creek behind the cabins. This sites are spacious with water, electric, and sewer. This is the kind of place to stay at while exploring the local area(s). Very clean park, very nice staff. The cabins are so cute, comfy and sleep 8. Also a great place for bike riding (road, not mountain). The location is just off of the Interstate with easy access.

This is definitely a vacation type park. No roughing it here.

    Bogue Chitto State Park Campground

    Spot 124 is great!

We stayed at site 124 in “Bottomland” and we loved it. New “deck” with room for a rug, fire pit, and chairs. The deck also has a picnic table with a fire pit just off the edge. There’s a creek that ran behind the spot that kept my husband busy. The only downside is that the water and electricity plug are pretty far from your camper- you may need to pack your extender.

    Land-O-Pines Family Campground

    Pleasant campground

Land-O-Pines is a nice private RV park near Folsom and Covington. We stayed two nights because my daughter was in a horse competition at a nearby horse farm. The sites are mostly shady. The streets and sites are gravel and can get a little muddy in spots after a rain. The park was clean and quiet, and the staff was friendly. About half the sites are for permanent users.

Stayed in pull-through campsite C69 which was shady and level. It was a gravel site. There was enough parking for my 34 ft TT and truck. Neighbors are nearby by not on top of you. The site included: picnic table on gravel, no fire ring. Utilities: 20/50A electric near the middle. The 20A receptacle looked like it had some minor burn marks. Water next to power pole, good pressure. Sewer near power pole with 4 non screw-on fitting.

AT&T had 2 bars of LTE and Verizon full bars of LTE service. AT&T Speedtest: 30.8 Mbps down, 3.6 Mbps up. Verizon Speedtest: 4.5 Mbps down, 11.8 Mbps up. WiFi available, but did not use. Required a login.

Would stay here again. We camped at Land-O-Pines Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.

    Tickfaw State Park Campground

    Primitive trip

Have visited twice. First visit, my original campsite was flooded and was able to switch to another site. Last trip was good but site 35 is very close to 33. The fire rings are within 30 feet of each other and can hear other campers talk, however the primitive sites were nice. They have about 4-5 trails, a splashpad, nature center and you can rent a canoe. Had alot of fun and is pet friendly.

New Orleans RV Resort & Marina

Nice park, but a little overpriced

Pontchartrain Landing is nice RV park. We had a great weekday stay in late December and the weather was nice. Its not far from downtown New Orleans. When you first get off the Interstate, the area looks abandoned and a little sketchy, but it is ok. Apple Maps guided me right to the park. There is a restaurant and bar, but we didnt eat there. I enjoyed walking and sitting along the water in the mornings. The occasional noise from airplanes taking off from nearby Lakefront Airport was a small detraction. Playground was not much.   Place is fenced at gated for added security.

Stayed in waterfront campsite#21, but view was partially blocked by houseboats.  Pretty disappointed for $89/night.  Back-in site with gravel parking and a picnic table. No BBQ pit or fire ring. 15A/30A/50A, water, sewer, and cable TV hookups. Site was pretty level. Awning faced north so we had some shade from the sun. There was a flower bed with palm trees between the sites. Not much shade in the park. The site is located on the water. Neighbor was at least 20 ft. Away. Roads in the park were gravel creating some dust. Both AT&T and Verizon had good signal(3 bars each). AT&T Speedtest= 26.8 Mbps down, x 6.5 Mbps up. Free Wi-Fi is available at the office/restaurant and paid available it the sites. Did not use the Wi-Fi.

Overall, not impressed for the price, but would stay here again. We camped at New Orleans RV Resort& Marina in a Travel Trailer.

    Bogue Chitto State Park Campground

    ‘Bout That Bogue Chitto

We visited Bogue Chitto after torrential rains pummeled Louisiana and Mississippi causing the park to cancel our site we had reserved with a water view in the Bottomland Loop. This really ended up being a blessing in disguise. We were forced to just pick a site when we arrived at the park (not so great for this OCD-Teacher-Planner-Mom), but after only one drive around the Upland Loop, we decided on site 2 and were not disappointed! The site backed up to a trail, and the driver side of the trailer faced a wooded area (instead of a neighboring site) which afforded us much more privacy than any of the other sites would have. Sites 9, 14, and 46 also looked nice with their awnings facing trees instead of other campsites. All sites in this loop had sewer hook ups, so that was nice. There was a concrete pad underneath the fire ring with a lifting grill, a separate grill by the wooden picnic table, and a lantern post. There was a big tent pad close to the fire ring as well.

We thoroughly enjoyed all of the hiking and biking opportunities this campground afforded us. Although the Bottomland area was closed for camping, we still checked things out for future visits. Given the choice between the two loops in the future, I think I’d choose site 2 again. Camp hosts were visible and kept the campground very clean. During our visit, there was a Dutch Oven competition, so the campground was packed.

We only were able to stay here for two nights and left wishing we could have stayed much longer! We will definitely visit Bogue Chitto State Park again.

    New Orleans West KOA

    Tight spaces, good location

The spaces are a bit tight, only RV spots have a fire pit. Showers are well kept but the place smells musty. The location can’t be beat and the employees are great. Very safe area and convenient shopping places nearby. Short drive to downtown. Good Wi-Fi, good laundry and dish cleaning area. Would stay again but I wish the small camper area would be more spaced out and have fire pits or grills. Nice little playground and the pool looked good as well.

    Indian Creek Campground

    BEAUTIFUL, BUT CROWDED

We stayed here knowing that it would be full. Well, it was crowded and loud! Kids riding golf carts everywhere. Still we had a nice stay at 30 dollars a night! Ice machine, picnic table, playground, hiking trails, kayaking and fire pits. Our site # 57 needed 2 blocks to level.

Guide to Madisonville

Cabin camping near Madisonville, Louisiana provides options within 30 minutes of Lake Pontchartrain's north shore. The area sits at an average elevation of 7-26 feet and features a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot summers. Water features dominate the landscape with numerous rivers, creeks, and bayous creating waterfront cabin opportunities where campers often report wildlife sightings.

What to do

Water recreation: Access to waterways features prominently at Bogue Chitto State Park Campground, which offers opportunities for kayaking and river activities. "The river offers a nice swimming hole during the summer," notes one visitor who also mentions "plenty of wildlife such as turkey, deer, rabbits, turtles, alligators and birds" in the park.

Hiking trails: Several state parks maintain well-marked trails through diverse ecosystems. At Tickfaw State Park Campground, you'll find "several miles of trails showcasing the beauty of southern Louisiana." One visitor reports, "We took a few hikes around the river as well as some late night walks along the boardwalk hoping to see a gator."

Biking routes: Paved and unpaved cycling paths connect campgrounds to nearby attractions. "We enjoyed riding our bikes around the campground and the trails in the park. We also took the trace to town and rode along the lake," shares one camper about their experience at Fontainebleau State Park.

Fishing opportunities: Most cabins offer proximity to fishing spots. "Site #57 needed 2 blocks to level," one camper notes about Indian Creek Campground, but appreciates the "ice machine, picnic table, playground, hiking trails, kayaking and fire pits" available.

What campers like

Natural settings: Mature trees provide shade and atmosphere at many cabin locations. At Hidden Oaks Family Campground, "the campground has a river running through it making it a great option to go up river and kayak back down." Another visitor observed that "the campground is split into 2 sides - primitive and RV. A general store sits in the middle for any necessities."

Recreational facilities: Beyond cabins, many campgrounds feature additional amenities. Land-O-Pines Family Campground has "a small pool and older water slide but very homey. Shades and grass and dirt roads. Awesome creek that the kids have a blast in," according to one visitor.

Wildlife viewing: The region supports diverse ecosystems with observable wildlife. One camper at Indian Creek mentions, "Hung out in the primitive area for a few days with my dog Dahli. Lots of wildlife (human and otherwise)! Overall a great trip."

Holiday events: Seasonal activities and themed weekends add entertainment value. "This park looks like a blast to come to on holidays for the family. They already have Christmas decorations up, a train ride ready and more!" shares a visitor to Hidden Oaks Family Campground.

What you should know

Seasonal weather considerations: The subtropical climate impacts cabin comfort differently throughout the year. At New Orleans RV Resort & Marina, located about 30 minutes from Madisonville, a camper found "the amenities are top notch, the sites are great. The price is a premium, but it's legit."

Site variations: Cabin and camping sites vary significantly across facilities. "Lots of sites but doesn't feel like your on top of the neighboring sites. Hauling an extra car and having a pull through tent site was extremely helpful," explains a Fontainebleau visitor.

Reservation timing: Popular cabin locations require advance planning, especially during peak seasons. At Bogue Chitto State Park, a camper advises, "Full RV hookups. Large shower stalls with locking door. Great walking trails. The grandkids loved the splash pad/water slide and easy access to the river."

Wildlife encounters: Native fauna includes insects and reptiles. "Bugs were tolerable with the help of bug spray," notes one camper at Fontainebleau State Park, while another at Tickfaw State Park mentions, "And sure, there are some snakes, but it's the swamp!!"

Tips for camping with families

Water features: Pools and water activities keep children entertained during summer months. "Great place to chill in water while camping during the summer!" states a visitor to Fireside RV Resort. "Pools and lazy river was about the only entertainment but for adults it was fine!"

Playground facilities: Check which campgrounds have upgraded play areas. "There's a new playground for the kids that our son especially likes to bike over to," shares a visitor to Indian Creek Campground.

Holiday programming: Several campgrounds offer themed weekends with activities. One camper writes about Land-O-Pines, "We went for Halloween weekend and there were alot of activities and trick or treating for the kids..great campsite great memories."

Safety considerations: Alligator warnings should be taken seriously. "DON'T FEED THE GATORS... Literally, don't feed the gators. There were signs everywhere... When my hubby rustled a bag, several alligators swam right up to our site!" warns a Bogue Chitto camper.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: Choose level sites with adequate length for larger vehicles. At Tickfaw State Park, a visitor reports, "The pad was plenty long enough for our 39' fifth wheel and our F-450 truck as are most sites in the park."

Access considerations: Some campgrounds have challenging entrance roads. At New Orleans RV Resort & Marina, a camper advises, "-2 roadways to enter/exit resort. A car can drive toward north but some potholes would not advise RV on road toward lake pontchaitrain."

Utility quality: Power stability and water pressure vary between locations. One visitor to Tickfaw State Park notes, "No dip in electricity at peak usage. Good water pressure. Free laundry for campers. Our site was lined with woods and gave us the feeling of seclusion."

Pull-through availability: Many parks offer limited pull-through sites. "Be careful booking a pull thru site if your unit is over 25', they're horseshoe shaped. We could not fit on a pull thru site," cautions a Fontainebleau visitor who found a helpful staff member who "found us the perfect back-in site that made our stay amazing!"
