Best Tent Camping near Lafayette, LA

Tent campgrounds in the Lafayette, Louisiana area are limited but offer distinct environments for camping enthusiasts. Cypremort Point State Park Campground on Vermillion Bay provides tent camping opportunities alongside a man-made beach and water access, while Attakapas Wildlife Management Area offers more primitive tent camping experiences with fewer amenities but greater seclusion.

Tent campers at Attakapas WMA must obtain a permit and complete the required sign-in/out process on the Louisiana WMA website. The area features three picnic tables with ample space for tent setups. Facilities are minimal, with questionable water quality, making it advisable to bring your own drinking water. Cypremort Point has five tent-only sites located on a man-made beach, each equipped with a picnic table and grill. The park provides cold outdoor showers and toilet facilities, though some reviewers note these amenities could use updating.

Areas farther from town, particularly in Attakapas WMA, offer deeper seclusion and less noise. A camper noted, "Stayed here 16 days over the Christmas/New Year's holidays and had the place to ourselves." This wildlife management area is approximately two miles from town with decent cell service and beautiful sunset views over adjacent fields. At Cypremort Point, tent sites lack privacy as day visitors may walk across camping areas. The park features fishing opportunities, with a pier and access to Vermillion Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. During off-season periods, the park remains very quiet with locked gates providing security, though campers should arrive prepared as nearby services close down. Both locations offer authentic primitive tent camping experiences within reasonable driving distance of Lafayette.

Lake Fausse Pointe State Park Campground

CCU#4, unimproved canoe campsite #4, at Lake Fausse Point State Park, Louisiana

Nice primitive campsite on an island that you get to by boat (motor boat/canoe/kayak). Site is also known as Highland Waters campsite. Nice big flat area under trees including large live oaks to set up your tents or hammocks under. Has a fire ring, but no toilets, no water, no electrical. Does have a covered wooden table to serve as a rough kitchen kiosk. Wooden dock by waters edge also has a picnic table. Must call the state park to reserve this site.

    Cypremort Point State Park Campground

    Its Aight

Its an aight spot to escape the city and not far from Lafayette. I like the grills and covered areas on the beach with the picnic tables. I don't like all the thick black oily mulch like substance in the water, its like quicksand and hard to swim in. This is not a tent camping area so I'm not sure why its listed as such, tents arent allowed here. The entrance fee is cheap.

    Acadiana Park Campground

    Great location

I stayed here in February 2025 for about 6 nights. It was very convenient and pleasant. Nice walking paths and a really interesting nature center. Not many amenities, but it's clean and quiet. They have a shower house that is not entirely reliable. BUT, still  well worth the time spent there as it's close to so much else in Lafayette itself and the surrounding region. Camping in Louisiana is sparse and very rustic, in general, so finding this well located spot was a huge bonus. I'm planning another stay in 2026. Hopefully the campground host,Jarod, is still there!

    Chases RV Park

    NEVER again!

My husband works out of town and we rented a 30 amp slot at Chase's RV/Weeks Island Rd RV for 1 month starting on 7/15/21. From the start, we had a problem with not being able to have enough power to run our hot water heater, or AC and lights were constantly dimming and outside breaker was tripping. When we spoke to the owner about the situation, he tried to say there was a problem with our RV, but by his own admission stated that they had had 2 different RVs"burn down" in the park. After a week in a half, we moved to another park and to no surprise, have had no electrical issues what so ever at the new park. Although the owner is nice enough, the manager of the property can be rude and obnoxious. When we spoke to the owner about the electrical issue and notified him that the problems resolved when we moved to another park and that the electrical issue is obviously with his park, he declined to refund any of the rental fees. If you value your safety and property, Absolutely no amenities.  Pool has been dug up, no wifi, no cable, and by managements own admission, the laudry and bath house stay locked because a park resident has bedbugs.  Stay far away from this park.

    Cypremort Point State Park Campground

    March 2022

Five tenting Only sites. NO RV sites at this time. Cold outdoor showers available Tent sites are on a man made beach. Picnic table and grill for each site. New board walk almost complete. Picnic pavilion. No senior or other discounts for tent sites. In the off season you will not find anything open. Bring all that you’ll need. Feel it’s a little expensive compared to campgrounds with many more amenities, nicer bathrooms and hot showers. Birding is good. VERY quiet in off season. Locked gate and feels safe.

    Sherburne WMA

    Free Camping and Shooting Range!

Arrived late at night to a near empty but well maintained camping area. Vault toilets and no hookups but otherwise a nice place to spend the night. The shooting range appears to open right at 8am so be prepared to be woken up in most American way possible lol. Bring bug spray!

South Campground — Chicot State Park

    Great Campground

We went camping in a tent this weekend at the park and really enjoyed it. We stayed at the south landing camping area in loop A. If you plan on camping in a tent I recommend the spots in loop A and most in loop D. B and C are more for RVs but you could still set up there, those two loops are more open and the spots are closer. Loops A and D are a little more spread out and have trees between some spots. The main bathroom was in good shape and had heat. Trash was picked up every morning by the park. Our spot had a fire ring, water , and electricity. The park allows you to use dead tree limbs for firewood. One thing to know about spots on loop A near the comfort station is that there’s a treatment plant in the center that kicks on every once in a while and makes a good bit of noise at night when the motor runs. It helped put me to sleep but it might bother others. Also theres no cell signal except in one or two random spots of the campground but it was nice to unplug for a weekend . We really enjoyed this campground and park though and will definitely be back .

    Poche's RV Park & Fish-N-Camp

Nice RV park. Convenient for canoeing in Bayou Teche.

Poches RV park is nice, well maintained, and has number of amenities. We had a wonderful weekend stay, and the weather was perfect. We canoed in the Shake Your Trail Feather festival on Bayou Teche. The RV park was close the the canoe trailhead. Take the time to explore the city of Breaux Bridge.

Go to Poches Market and buy some pork sausage stuffed with jalapeos. Also, be sure to make a reservation and go eat at Little Big Cup in Arnaudville about 15 minutes away.

Stayed in campsite#69. Back-in site with concrete parking, picnic table, and fire ring. 15A/30A/50A, water, and sewer hookups. It has a nice grass area with fire pit in the rear of the site next to the lake. Not much shade in the campsite. The site is located on the lake. Neighbors were pretty close. Roads in the park were asphalt or gravel. The free WiFi throughout the park was adequate for checking emails, surfing the web, etc. We camped in a Travel Trailer. Would stay here again. We camped at Poche's RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

    Palmetto Island State Park Campground

    Decent Spot

It's a decent spot for being nearby to Lafayette. The thing I don't like is the expensive prices for State Parks in Louisiana and the closed gates that don't allow late night entrance. Small man made pond in the back, watched a kid catch a large bass a few years back. The primitive hike in spots are on the back side of the pond so you have to hike in about a mile to rent camp for cheaper than the price of the RV pull up spots. This is a newer state park and it has nice, clean, large facilities with showers and bathrooms. The trail is super short. Overall the park is very small. Fun spot for kayak fishing. Noticed lots of invasive apple snails.
