Several RV parks near Fort Polk accommodate military personnel and travelers. Arlington RV Park in Leesville offers level concrete sites with water, electric, and sewer hookups for big rigs, though the park sits close to the highway. "The rv park is right off the road, and you can hear cars going by easily from anywhere in the rv park," notes one camper, though the location is convenient for those needing proximity to Fort Polk. Pecan Acres RV Park provides water hookups, 50-amp electric, sewer connections, and shower facilities, with well-maintained grounds that support larger motorhomes. Shady Lake RV Park in Leesville features full hookup sites with 50-amp service, sanitary dump stations, and drinking water, though some sites have long-term residents.

Military personnel frequently utilize these parks as affordable housing alternatives to base accommodations. Most parks require reservations, particularly during training rotations at Fort Polk when availability becomes limited. While the majority of RV parks near Fort Polk primarily serve as functional bases rather than vacation destinations, Toledo Bend Recreation Site offers a military-only campground with lakeside pull-through RV pads, full hookups, and recreation amenities. According to reviews, many parks have significant numbers of long-term residents, creating an atmosphere "more like moving into an old neighborhood" than traditional camping. Access roads to most parks are paved, though some interior roads may need additional gravel. Pets are allowed at most facilities, though restrictions may apply, and trash collection is generally provided.

South Toledo Bend State Park Campground

      ALMOST PERFECT

This was my first time at this beautiful state park. I will definitely come back! 3 days was not long enough to do everything! Our camper site was #46. It had a very large well kept wooden deck with a picnic table. The camper pad was long and concrete. It was slightly uneven, we used 3 blocks to level it off..There was also a large sand pad if you preferred a tent. A firepit was also there. Many of the other sites also had decks, with the same things available. It had water and electricity, a dump station, and very clean shower/restrooms . Also available were primitive camping sites with amazing views. Oh, did I mention that our site had a very short walk to a dock overlooking the beautiful lake. This dock had room for four boats! There are beautiful biking, and hiking trails, both concrete and dirt. Several play areas for the kids! There was a beach and swimming area, a nature center,, and playgrounds. The camp hosts were amazing and very helpful. The park was super clean, family and pet friendly, and a great price at 28 dollars a night. Happy camping!!

      Shady Lake RV Park

Feels like a Trailer Park rather than a Campground

I was out looking for a place to camp. I drove around the park. Some RV’s had dug in their sewer hoses for a more permanent living arrangement. There were other clues that verified some were living here very long term. You could tell some sites were set up like the people had been living there longer than a year.

While the owner was very nice and friendly, I just would not feel comfortable camping around people who live there long term.

I have since found out that this happens around Military Bases frequently. The reason is because it makes more financial sense for Military Personnel to not stay in base housing. Permanent Base Housing sucks their housing allowance away quickly. However, purchasing an RV and getting into a campground enables them to keep more of that money in their pockets.

This campground is near Fort Polk. I was told by one of the Army People that works there, this is what is happening with all of the RV resorts/campgrounds in the area. I understand what’s happening better now.

However, camping in a campground around a majority of the people that live in a place long term is more like moving into an old neighborhood. It’s equivalent to going to camp in a residential trailer park. That’s not camping. 🤷🏻‍♀️

      Holbrook Parish Park Campground

      Small, very pleasing campground

Three small loops in the park, one for tenters, and two for RVs. There is a small RV loop located by the boat ramp, and another located by the playground/bath house. We stayed at site 2 near the bath house. The site was far from level, sloping down in the front, but we were able to make it work. The staff were VERY friendly and the grounds well groomed . Fire rings and smoker grills were brand new. There are electric and water hookups but no sewer, a dump station is available on site. We plan to visit again on our return trip home. All at a bargain price. Recommended

      Arlington RV Park

      Convenient to Fort Polk

Arlington RV park is located in Leesville, close to Fort Polk. The rv park is right off the road, and you can hear cars going by easily from anywhere in the rv park. This is a true rv park, but was fairly clean and maintained compared to others in the area. This is not a place to go if you are looking to have a nice relaxing camping experience, you would want to be on the Toledo bend lake for that, but would be sufficient if you have a camper and needed to be near the base, or in Leesville for some reason. Like several rv parks, Arlington has long term residents, with a few sites for people passing through.

      Indian Mounds Recreation Area

      Quiet place to camp

Indian Mounds Campground is located in East Texas near the Texas-Louisiana border in the Sabine National Forest. It is a quiet and peaceful location to camp.

RV and tent campsites come with a fire ring, a picnic table, and potable water. Good views of the lake and situated in forest area. Nearby hiking, biking, swimming, and fishing. Not many campers in campground and that made for a great stay!

      Hidden Treasure RV Resort

      Great location

This campground is located on the Cotile lake in Boyce, Louisiana. And it's only about 8 or 10 minutes from I-49, but well worth the time. There is a small boat launch/fishing area. A couple of the guests are long term, but it is very quiet here. No matter what site you are in, you will need to level your rv. We are in site #17 and it overlooks the lake. Owners are fantastic. Highly recommend.

      Pecan Acres RV Park

Better than some in the area

Pelican Acres RV park is located near Fort Polk, and Toledo Bend Lake. The RV park is right off the road, and is a better choice than several of the rv parks in the area. The sites all look fairly level, and the property was well maintained. Like most rv parks in the area, this one has a number of long term residents, but this one was a little bigger and nicer than most I saw. If you were passing through the area, or needed to be near the base, this would be a good place to stop for a day or two, but if you’re looking for a nice relaxing camp spot, you’ll want to look closer to the lake.

    Guide to Fort Polk

RV campgrounds around Fort Polk, Louisiana primarily serve military personnel stationed at the base, with most parks located within a 30-minute drive. The area sits in west-central Louisiana near the Texas border, characterized by pine forests and proximity to Toledo Bend Reservoir, the fifth-largest man-made lake in the United States. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity, while winters remain relatively mild.

    What to do

Fishing access at Toledo Bend: The Toledo Bend Recreation Site - MILITARY offers direct lake access exclusively for military personnel. "Fishing is also very available, as well as playground, boat launch, boat rentals and R.V. accommodations as well," notes camper Conrad V.

Casino entertainment: Red Shoes RV Park & Chalets provides camping with casino access. "Then you have the Coushatta casino and all its amenities, so no need to travel far for fun and food for adults and kids," writes David M., who appreciates the convenience for entertainment.

Water recreation: The Fin & Feather Resort on Toledo Bend Lake offers multiple water activities. Brandon A. notes, "The resort has cabins and rooms for rent, a marina with boat launches, a nice little store, and a great restaurant with good eats."

    What campers like

Level concrete pads: Natchitoches Pecan Orchard RV Park receives positive feedback for site quality. Lea B. states, "We stayed 3 nights and it was a peaceful visit. There were plenty of sites to choose from, all on clean concrete pads."

Pool facilities: Several parks offer swimming options during hot Louisiana summers. At Red Shoes RV Park, David M. mentions, "Pool area within camp grounds area. The casino side has a lazy river and a swim up bar for adults, also slides."

Quiet atmosphere: Many campers value peaceful surroundings away from training activities at Fort Polk. Caroline D. says of Natchitoches Pecan Orchard, "This RV Park is neat and clean. Each row of sites is named after a variety of Pecans. There is a pool and a pond. We enjoyed our stay."

    What you should know

Long-term residents: Most RV parks near Fort Polk house military personnel living there semi-permanently. At Shady Lake RV Park, Granny C. observed, "Some RV's had dug in their sewer hoses for a more permanent living arrangement... Limited availability during rotations: RV parks fill quickly during training rotations at Fort Polk, requiring advance reservations.

Laundry facility issues: Some parks have inadequate laundry facilities for their size. Douglas T. found at Red Shoes: "The laundry is very small considering the size of the park... They have 4 dryers only 2 working, 4 washers only 3 working. I had to wait... Never spent 3 hours doing laundry before."

    Tips for camping with families

Military yurt options: Hidden Treasure RV Resort offers family-friendly alternatives to standard RV camping. Ty A. notes, "This campground is located on the Cotile lake in Boyce, Louisiana. And it's only about 8 or 10 minutes from I-49, but well worth the time."
