South Toledo Bend State Park Campground

    Best camping around!

South Toledo Bend State Park is located near Leesville on Toledo Bend lake. The lake is known for Bass Fishing and is listed as one of the best bass fishing lakes in the country. I’ve also read that the lake has great areas for scuba diving, if you are into that. The park is not far from Fort Polk, and offers nice opportunities for camping, hiking, boating, fishing, kayaking, etc. The campsites are mostly all heavily wooded, and spacious. Plenty of room between sites. They have several waterfront sites with hookups, but the I terror sites were nice also, and most have a lake view. The park has docks for fishing and boat launch, and a fish cleaning station. Theres a nice playground too. There’s also rental cabins that looked really nice. The park was still being cleaned up from hurricane Laura, but was still very nice. The best place to camp I’ve seen around this area!

South Toledo Bend State Park Campground

    ALMOST PERFECT

This was my first time at this beautiful state park. I will definitely come back! 3 days was not long enough to do everything! Our camper site was #46. It had a very large well kept wooden deck with a picnic table. The camper pad was long and concrete. It was slightly uneven, we used 3 blocks to level it off..There was also a large sand pad if you preferred a tent. A firepit was also there. Many of the other sites also had decks, with the same things available. It had water and electricity, a dump station, and very clean shower/restrooms . Also available were primitive camping sites with amazing views. Oh, did I mention that our site had a very short walk to a dock overlooking the beautiful lake. This dock had room for four boats! There are beautiful biking, and hiking trails, both concrete and dirt. Several play areas for the kids! There was a beach and swimming area, a nature center,, and playgrounds. The camp hosts were amazing and very helpful. The park was super clean, family and pet friendly, and a great price at 28 dollars a night. Happy camping!!

Toledo Bend Recreation Site - MILITARY

    Family Friendly, prime fishing location.

The Army Recreation sight managed by MWR is a very well run campground and boat launch. Making a reservation was easy, and the lady i made the reservation with initially even called to follow up when the weather turned ugly.

Our stay was in one of their Yurts. Though they do have cabins as well as primitive camping options. The yurt was supplied with two bunks, the bottoms being a a full size with the top bunks being twins. Amenities included heating and air conditioning as well as a mini fridge, keurig, and a couple of small drawers and a lamp. The only real complaint i can say i had was some of the linoleum tile was loose inside. Other than that, the yurt was an interesting cross between cabin and tent.

Fishing is also very available, as well as playground, boat launch, boat rentals and R.V. accommodations as well.

We may just go back and try a cabin next time as the temperatures have been getting cold here.

Also be aware, there is a one time pet fee when staying in the cabins and yurts.

South Toledo Bend State Park Campground

Camping, canoeing & kayaking, at S. Toledo Bend State Park, west Louisiana

Nice state park on western boundary of Louisiana along Toledo Bend Reservoir. Camping here is usually quite nice from late Oct through late April. Only (5) undeveloped campsites are available for tents/hammocks only. They have a great view looking out over the huge lake. Each has a picnic table and a fire ring w/ steel grill rack. On weekends you must reserve campsites/cabins for a minimum of two nights when doing online reservations. There is a large number of improved campsites that have water and electrical hook-ups, and quite a few cabins that can be rented, some of which also have a nice view of the lake. Bathhouse was fairly clean whenever I have been there, and has showers, sinks, and flush toilets. I would have given this park's camping area a 5-star rating, but there was no hot water left to take a nice warm shower during my last visit. Toledo Bend Reservoir is the #1 bass fishing lake in America 2 years in a row. Clean water and a few sandy beaches along the two small nearby islands are great for hanging out on when canoeing/kayaking/ boating. Bald Eagles are often seen during late Fall, Winter months, and early Spring. Please note that the raccoons are professional thieves at this state park, so you need to put your food away at night.

South Toledo Bend State Park Campground

    Excellent Primitive Experience

Primitive campsites are clean, include a picnic table and fire pit, and are nestled on a bluff overlooking Toledo Bend. The park offers a comfort station within walking distance of the primitive sites that includes air-conditioned bathrooms and showers, coin-operated laundry, and water fountains. Multiple trails, a boat launch, fish cleaning station, swimming area, and more! We had a great experience and plan to return as often as we can. I couldn’t expect any more for less than $20/night.

    Indian Creek Recreation Area

    Great Weekend Getaway!

Indian Creek is only a couple hours away from our home, so it’s an ideal spot for a weekend getaway together! My husband and I have stayed here twice—first, at site 52 and then at site 56. We had to call the campground prior to our stay to get a gate code as they lock the gate at night, but that was simple enough and made us feel safe. During each of our stays, the campground was nearly full, so we counted ourselves lucky with the sites we had reserved.

We have a 21’ travel trailer and barely fit it and our Toyota Tundra in site 52. The lake was visible when standing inside the camper (driver side) but not from our chairs by the fire. There was a pretty steep drop off from the concrete pad to the ground level forcing us to put our outdoor rug on the ground. We appreciated the shade, two handy trees for our hammock, the ducks on the lake, and the sound of the wind blowing through the tall grass. We had neighbors one night in site 54 which is very close, but they kept to themselves so we didn’t feel encroached upon. Site 52 was also a little low, so it was a bit soggy from rains that fell the week before we had arrived.

After exploring the campground on this first trip, we decided that site 56 would be perfect for us. We felt like “kings of the mountain” during our second stay at Indian Creek as we were at the top of a hill. Site 56 had a HUGE backyard leading down to the lake. The view from our chairs by the fire and the picnic table were excellent. There were lots of trees to hang our hammock from, too.

Other sites that we found appealing were 13, 16, 45, 57, 95, 99, and 100. We really prefer a nice view, separation from neighboring sites, and privacy when selecting a site, so for us 56 was ideal. All sites had concrete pads, picnic tables, and fire rings but no lantern posts. The first loop of the campground (Susan’s Loop) seemed much quieter than the others (perhaps because it was further from the playground and little beach area). The beach areas seem really nice for camping during warmer weather. We thoroughly enjoyed hiking the trail and saw lots of deer tracks, ducks, and squirrels. There were many families camping with children, but the campground has a nice, quiet vibe that we really enjoyed. There is a Dollar General just a few minutes away as well as a well-appointed grocery store should you need any last minute items. We cannot wait to visit Indian Creek again!

Guide to Fort Polk

Toledo Bend Lake contains over 70 distinct cabin rental options within 60 miles of Fort Polk. The region experiences humid subtropical climate with summer temperatures averaging 91°F and winters rarely dropping below 40°F. Most cabins operate year-round with peak season running March through October when fishing conditions are optimal.

What to do

Kayaking and fishing from docks: At Indian Creek Recreation Area, visitors can launch kayaks directly from their campsites. "We camped near the lake, watched fishermen and boaters during the day," notes one camper who enjoyed the primitive camping area. The recreation area offers multiple docks for fishing access.

Beach recreation and volleyball: Cypress Bend State Rec Area maintains a renovated beach area with volleyball courts for visitors staying in cabins or camping. "Highlights for us were the renovated beach area, clean restrooms, and the lighted fishing pier, which made evening fishing a treat," a recent visitor mentioned. The park charges only $2 per person entrance fee with children 12 and under entering free.

Canoe rentals for catch-and-release fishing: Several properties offer equipment rentals for water recreation. "Canoe rentals for catch and release fishing in ponds" are available at Artesian Springs Resort according to a visitor. This property maintains several stocked ponds specifically for guests.

What campers like

Fully furnished waterfront options: North Toledo Bend State Park Campground provides well-maintained cabins with lake views. "Excellent views fishing and camping spots," notes a recent visitor. Another camper mentioned, "Spotted an eagle out our window" while staying in one of the park's accommodations.

Unique yurt accommodations: Toledo Bend Recreation Site offers military-managed yurts as an alternative to traditional cabins. "The yurt was supplied with two bunks, the bottoms being a full size with the top bunks being twins. Amenities included heating and air conditioning as well as a mini fridge, keurig, and a couple of small drawers and a lamp," explained one visitor who appreciated this option.

Wooded privacy between sites: Campers consistently mention site spacing as a positive feature when renting cabins near Fort Polk. "Beautiful campground with lots of space in between sites. Roads need some work getting in there and the closest store with any necessities is about a 20min drive each way. But we loved the solitude," noted a visitor to South Toledo Bend State Park.

What you should know

Late arrival procedures: Most cabin rental facilities lock gates after hours, requiring advance coordination. "We had to call the campground prior to our stay to get a gate code as they lock the gate at night, but that was simple enough and made us feel safe," explains a visitor to Indian Creek.

Pet fees and restrictions: Toledo Bend Recreation Site charges a one-time pet fee for cabin guests bringing animals. Bundick Lake Retreat and RV Park offers pet-friendly cabins and maintains a dedicated dog park area. "Dog park for your fur babies to play in," mentioned one visitor.

Supply availability: Most cabin locations have limited on-site shopping. "The closest store with any necessities is about a 20min drive each way," noted one camper. Some resorts like Red Shoes RV Park & Chalets offer small market facilities but with limited inventory and higher prices than nearby towns.

Tips for camping with families

Beach access considerations: Bundick Lake Retreat and RV Park offers family-oriented amenities beyond basic cabin rentals. "We loved the pool, game room, and mini golf course, which kept our family entertained for hours," one visitor shared, though another recent visitor noted some maintenance issues: "The pool is dirty, mini golf unusable, playground dangerous."

Playground facilities: Multiple cabin rental locations maintain dedicated children's areas. Indian Creek Recreation Area includes multiple sandy beach areas and playgrounds specifically designed for younger visitors. One camper noted: "This is a campground that is designed for young families, from the multiple sandy beach areas to the playgrounds, there was lot for my elementary age children to do."

Entertainment options: Cabinet rental guests often appreciate indoor entertainment for rainy days. "The park offers a fantastic blend of outdoor and indoor activities, from mini golf and pickleball to a well-equipped game room," mentioned a Bundick Lake visitor, making it suitable for extended family stays in variable weather.

Tips from RVers

Site dimensions for larger units: Red Shoes RV Park & Chalets offers spacious cabin options alongside RV sites. "Ample sized cement sites with picnic tables. Our 42" 5th wheel has 4 slides and the site was roomy," noted a recent visitor. The property also maintains fully-furnished chalets for non-RV travelers.

Laundry facilities: Limited washing machines are available at some locations but may be shared with hotel guests. "They have 4 dryers only 2 working, 4 washers only 3 working. I had to wait for people to finish with washers and dryers in order to do my 2 loads. Never spent 3 hours doing laundry before," reported one Red Shoes visitor.

Level pads and utility placement: Concrete pads with well-placed hookups are available at several properties near Fort Polk. "Level concrete sites with patio and picnic table. Full hookups with cable TV," noted one Red Shoes visitor. Artesian Springs Resort similarly provides "30 and 50 amp connections, sewer and water hook up" for both cabin guests and RV travelers.
