Best Tent Camping near Plaquemine, LA

Tent campgrounds near Plaquemine, Louisiana include several established options within reasonable driving distance. The Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales offers tent camping with various amenities including drinking water, electric hookups, and showers. For those seeking a more primitive experience, the Attakapas Wildlife Management Area provides free tent sites with basic facilities approximately 30 miles south of Plaquemine.

Most tent sites in this region have variable terrain and limited facilities. At Attakapas WMA, campers must obtain a permit before staying and should be prepared to sign in and out as required by Louisiana WMA regulations. The campground features picnic tables and toilets but lacks electric hookups or showers. Sites at Lamar Dixon are more developed but campers report they can be "a little small but good for a quick stay." During summer months, high humidity and heat affect all camping areas near Plaquemine, making spring and fall generally more comfortable for tent camping.

The tent camping experience varies significantly between locations around Plaquemine. Areas farther from town provide deeper seclusion and wildlife viewing opportunities. According to one visitor, Attakapas WMA is "beautiful, clean, quiet" and they "had the place to ourselves" during a winter stay. Another tent camper noted that Tunica Hills WMA Campground, located about 75 miles northwest of Plaquemine, is "basically an open field" with porta-potties and no dedicated spots, allowing campers to "pop your tent anywhere you can find a spot." Many tent campsites serve as convenient bases for exploring the surrounding wetlands, forests and waterways characteristic of southern Louisiana. Campers should prepare for potential wildlife encounters including mosquitoes and, in some areas, alligators, particularly in camping areas near water.

Lake Fausse Pointe State Park Campground

CCU#4, unimproved canoe campsite #4, at Lake Fausse Point State Park, Louisiana

Nice primitive campsite on an island that you get to by boat (motor boat/canoe/kayak). Site is also known as Highland Waters campsite. Nice big flat area under trees including large live oaks to set up your tents or hammocks under. Has a fire ring, but no toilets, no water, no electrical. Does have a covered wooden table to serve as a rough kitchen kiosk. Wooden dock by waters edge also has a picnic table. Must call the state park to reserve this site.

    Tickfaw State Park Campground

True Louisiana atmosphere, fun for every age!

Every time we visit this park (which is a lot) we are able to have a new and fun adventure!

When my children were very young. This was one of the first places in the area to have a splash park for my children to run and play while staying cool in the south Louisiana heat.

Move up a few years, Tickfaw has provided myself and children with hours of fun, safe and informative hikes along the well maintained boardwalks through South Louisiana swamps.

As my children have grown we have still been able to explore the park further by utilizing the campgrounds! The tent camping section has defined/ private tent sites with picnic tables, and parking next to each site. The Rv park also boost a fun and family atmosphere, with fishing ponds, bike riding, canoeing, and primitive hiking. All with clean and air conditioned restroom facilities easily accessible to all sites.

    Chases RV Park

    NEVER again!

My husband works out of town and we rented a 30 amp slot at Chase's RV/Weeks Island Rd RV for 1 month starting on 7/15/21. From the start, we had a problem with not being able to have enough power to run our hot water heater, or AC and lights were constantly dimming and outside breaker was tripping. When we spoke to the owner about the situation, he tried to say there was a problem with our RV, but by his own admission stated that they had had 2 different RVs"burn down" in the park. After a week in a half, we moved to another park and to no surprise, have had no electrical issues what so ever at the new park. Although the owner is nice enough, the manager of the property can be rude and obnoxious. When we spoke to the owner about the electrical issue and notified him that the problems resolved when we moved to another park and that the electrical issue is obviously with his park, he declined to refund any of the rental fees. If you value your safety and property, Absolutely no amenities.  Pool has been dug up, no wifi, no cable, and by managements own admission, the laudry and bath house stay locked because a park resident has bedbugs.  Stay far away from this park.

    Tickfaw State Park Campground

    My family go to park

This park is VERY family friendly.

Camping - There are 2 loops - 1-primative tent only camping, 1-RV/tent camping. There is a nice bathhouse in a central location to both loops. There is a bit of privacy between tent spots because of the trees. My favorite spots are 47,49,50. I have had a few of my reservations cancelled by the park when the river is high because the camping areas will flood.

Park - there are few different hiking trails - check Tickfaw River levels (or call park) because when the river is high, 1 or 2 of the trails could be under water. There is a ADA boardwalk trail that is very nice (especially for the kiddos) with a covered picnic area. The park offers a nature center that is really nice and they have animal demonstrations where you are able to really learn about Louisiana wildlife and touch the animals as well. This park is a great place to bring bikes as well. During the summer months, there is a splash pad that kids really enjoy. This is also a great park to rent canoes (or bring your own) for a day out on the waterways.

    Sherburne WMA

    Free Camping and Shooting Range!

Arrived late at night to a near empty but well maintained camping area. Vault toilets and no hookups but otherwise a nice place to spend the night. The shooting range appears to open right at 8am so be prepared to be woken up in most American way possible lol. Bring bug spray!

    Tickfaw State Park Campground

    Laid back huricane impacted bayou

Got to the park with no reservation and found a spot no problem. There are both tent and RV slots. RV neighbors are visible, but there is a bit of space.,Each slot comes with a table on a wooden platform, a fire ring, and what appears to be a game hook, as well as a water spigot and electric hookup.

Took a walk before the rain set in. Many of the boardwalk trails appear to be closed due to storm damage. Saw a whole pack of night herons flying together. The bayou is spooky feeling with gator crossing zones and interesting cypress trees. Seems like it should be buggier than it is for on a warm day in late March.

The restroom and laundry room seem clean and well tended.

    Acadiana Park Campground

    Great location

I stayed here in February 2025 for about 6 nights. It was very convenient and pleasant. Nice walking paths and a really interesting nature center. Not many amenities, but it's clean and quiet. They have a shower house that is not entirely reliable. BUT, still  well worth the time spent there as it's close to so much else in Lafayette itself and the surrounding region. Camping in Louisiana is sparse and very rustic, in general, so finding this well located spot was a huge bonus. I'm planning another stay in 2026. Hopefully the campground host,Jarod, is still there!

    Poche's RV Park & Fish-N-Camp

Nice RV park. Convenient for canoeing in Bayou Teche.

Poches RV park is nice, well maintained, and has number of amenities. We had a wonderful weekend stay, and the weather was perfect. We canoed in the Shake Your Trail Feather festival on Bayou Teche. The RV park was close the the canoe trailhead. Take the time to explore the city of Breaux Bridge.

Go to Poches Market and buy some pork sausage stuffed with jalapeos. Also, be sure to make a reservation and go eat at Little Big Cup in Arnaudville about 15 minutes away.

Stayed in campsite#69. Back-in site with concrete parking, picnic table, and fire ring. 15A/30A/50A, water, and sewer hookups. It has a nice grass area with fire pit in the rear of the site next to the lake. Not much shade in the campsite. The site is located on the lake. Neighbors were pretty close. Roads in the park were asphalt or gravel. The free WiFi throughout the park was adequate for checking emails, surfing the web, etc. We camped in a Travel Trailer. Would stay here again. We camped at Poche's RV Park in a Travel Trailer.

    Tickfaw State Park Campground

    Great little park

Tickfaw State Park is a Louisiana State Park located just outside of Springfield, LA.  The park is not very large, but big enough not to constantly run into people.  On this visit, we took our Christmas pictures along the “Cypress Gum Trial” - a boardwalk walk trail located across the street from the campsites and around the playground(s).  There is a nice covered area with picnic tables.  There are 2 camping loops - (1) for tents and (1) for RV’s.  Our site, #37 on the tent loop, we had enough space as well as privacy.  We went the weekend after Thanksgiving and the park was not overcrowded and the weather was perfect.  I did find the boardwalk trail was VERY slippery covered in wet leaves.

Guide to Plaquemine

Tent campsites near Plaquemine, Louisiana range from simple clearings to designated areas with basic facilities. The region experiences high humidity year-round with average summer temperatures reaching 91°F and winter lows around 41°F. Most camping areas sit at low elevations of 10-25 feet above sea level, resulting in poor drainage during Louisiana's frequent rain events.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Attakapas Wildlife Management Area offers access to numerous waterways where campers can fish for bass, catfish, and other freshwater species. According to one camper, "About 2 miles from town, with decent service. Beautiful sunsets over the fields."

Explore nearby events: Lamar Dixon Expo Center frequently hosts regional events that campers can attend. As Paula W. notes, "Lamar Dixon is huge, and usually has some type of event happening. If you camp there during these events, it is very convenient. There is a public fishing pond with a very nice solar lighted, paved track around it."

Wildlife viewing: Morning hours provide the best opportunities for spotting native wildlife at camping areas. Birdwatchers can observe waterfowl, songbirds and raptors throughout the year at most tent campsites near Plaquemine.

What campers like

Central location: The tent camping options around Plaquemine provide convenient access to major Louisiana destinations. Shelly S. appreciates that Lamar Dixon Expo Center is "outside Baton Rogue but not far from New Orleans either. This is a good in between spot to pitch your tent and visit all the very cool places roun'cher."

Solitude during off-seasons: Winter camping provides more privacy at most locations. A camper at Attakapas WMA reports, "Stayed here 16 days over the Christmas/New Year's holidays and had the place to ourselves."

Affordable options: Several camping areas offer no-cost or low-cost tent sites. At Attakapas Wildlife Management Area, Alicia A. notes the camping is free but requires "Permit and sign-in/out required on Louisiana WMA website."

What you should know

Wildlife precautions: Alligators and snakes are present in many camping areas near Plaquemine, especially near water. One camper at Lamar Dixon admits, "I always worry whenever we are anywhere with possible gators so we didn't go looking and were careful at night."

Water availability: Potable water access varies significantly between campgrounds. A recent visitor to Tunica Hills WMA Campground reports it is "Primitive only" with no drinking water available, while other sites may have questionable water quality, as one camper at Attakapas WMA warns: "The water is questionable, bring your own."

Site configuration: Many campgrounds lack designated individual sites. Tyler H. describes Tunica Hills WMA Campground as "Basically an open field. There are porta-potties on site and a deer cleaning rack for hunting season. No dedicated spots, just basically pop your tent anywhere you can find a spot."

Tips for camping with families

Safety considerations: Keep children supervised at all times, especially near water. Most camping areas have uneven terrain and potentially dangerous wildlife. Bring proper footwear for muddy conditions.

Amenities for kids: Lamar Dixon Expo Center offers more developed facilities suitable for families with young children. According to one visitor, "There is a public fishing pond with a very nice solar lighted, paved track around it. Scouts often tent camp in that area but it is big enough to accommodate everyone."

Weather preparation: Summer camping with children requires extra precautions against heat and insects. Pack portable fans, cooling towels and sufficient water. Spring camping typically offers more comfortable temperatures but increased chance of rainfall.

Tips from RVers

Limited hookup configurations: At many campgrounds with shared utilities, access can be problematic. Jonathan L. notes that at Lamar Dixon Expo Center, "the hookups are shared between 4 sites. Think the center of a rectangle made of 4 rectangles. However, the electrical at each hookup is a large electrical breaker panel with the receptacles on the sides of the panel. There were only 2 50A receptacles at my station."

Arrival timing: Arriving during daylight hours improves setup experience at all locations near Plaquemine. Many campsites lack adequate lighting for nighttime setup, and insects are typically less active during daytime hours.
