CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Louisville North Campground accommodates pets at all RV sites, tent areas, and cabins with full hookups and picnic tables at each location. Add-More Campground and Grandma's RV Park also permit pets throughout their facilities with varying amenities. Brooks RV Park offers pet-friendly full hookup sites with individual picnic tables and fire pits, while Jefferson Memorial Forest's Horine Reservation provides more secluded pet camping in a natural forest setting. Most campgrounds maintain standard pet policies requiring leashes and proper waste disposal. The campsites at Jefferson Memorial Forest feature exceptionally soft ground due to years of accumulated pine needles, making for comfortable tent sleeping with pets.

Trails throughout Jefferson Memorial Forest welcome leashed dogs with multiple route options ranging from 1.5 to 13 miles through mixed deciduous and coniferous forests. Louisville North Campground's proximity to downtown Louisville allows for convenient pet-friendly urban exploration while maintaining camping accommodations. Brooks RV Park provides a secure environment for pets with its location on a dead-end road surrounded by large trees, creating a country setting despite being just off I-65. Visitors should note that Jefferson Memorial Forest's campground sits beneath Louisville International Airport's flight path, with large jets passing overhead during morning and afternoon hours. Camping areas at many facilities are positioned close together, so maintaining control of pets helps ensure a harmonious experience for all campers.

    Louisville South KOA

    Nice

There was lots to do at this KOA. There was corn hole, ladder ball, pool, walking trails, access to the river, cat fish pond, small dog park, and washers & dryers. You could bring your RV, travel trailer, tent camp, or rent a cabin. I’m sure I’m forgetting something. The spots were close together. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The park was clean and well maintained.

    Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet, bathrooms lacking.

We had a pretty decent time at Taylorsville Lake. The spots were spacious, and very nice picnic tables. We did a trail which was nice and went down to a boat ramp to see the lake. You can also rent boats there as well. The bathrooms in my opinion needed a major cleaning. They were nice just not very clean. We most likely won’t visit here again but was nice to hit a Kentucky campground. I have found that camping in Kentucky is much cheaper than in Indiana. Definitely worth a checkout.

    Elkhorn Creek RV Park

    Nice location, friendly staff

Make sure you take the exit they tell you & do NOT follow gps or you’ll go down a long country road. Nice little family owned campground on Elkhorn Creek. Convenient to Frankfort, Georgetown & Lexington. Waterfront sites available, many concrete sites & some gravel sites. From what I hear, they have made many improvements and continue to do so. I believe most sites are full hookup & they are building cute little pergolas on several sites. I had a long, gravel pull thru site. Barely any room on the camp side but both ends were roomy. Cute little general store & a very clean little laundry building w/a change machine. Fire rings on all sites that I saw. I believe there are 2 play areas for kids & a pool. There is a dog park w/a side for large dogs & small dogs. It was shaded and had seating. Convenient to several distilleries including Buffalo Trace & Woodford Reserve. There’s a place nearby that rents kayaks and canoes. They have entertainment & a food truck on weekends.

    Louisville South KOA

    Great place to stay

The staff are super helpful. The site we had was for a 38’ RV. Full hookups, dog park, lots of places to walk, even trails. We had a great stay here and will most likely come back next time we’re near Louisville.

    Buffalo Trace Park

    Great lake view

The sites are well-spaced and there’s a beautiful lake where you can kayak, canoe, fish, let your dog swim, etc. Disc golf is the big activity at this park. Awesome walking path and a petting zoo. The park is exceptionally clean. Sites on the lake view side are noisy due to traffic on the highway.

    Scottsburg/Raintree Lake KOA

    Still developing

Owners are fantastic. They will get to a 5 as they continue their hard work making it an awesome place. New owners took over 4 months ago. They have many activities (was yogi bear till it was sold) put put, bowling, chess, volleyball, fishing. Dog park, Play ground was nicely done. Lake has lots of algae. Pool is brand new. It is by highway however, that did not bother us personally. I will visit again and would consider seasonal. Service id rate them a 5. Wonderful people and the place as much potential.

    Scottsburg/Raintree Lake KOA

    New Name “Camp Raintree Lake”

Gorgeous property with such kind and friendly owners. New owners that are making improvements to the property but it is so nice already.

The lake is GORGEOUS. Sites have mature trees, variety of singing birds. Really nice stay here as we were passing through. There is a sand volleyball net, gah gah ball, dog park, playground, mini golf (not ready for summer yet), and a new pool soon (concrete poured the other day).

Campground is a few miles from interstate and right off the highway so some highway noise but still a great picturesque place.

We will definitely stay here again if we are in the area .

    Love's RV Hookup-Leavenworth IN 839

    Last minute

Rest stops leading up to this RV spot were under construction. This was a last minute decision. It was late and I didn’t want to drive in the dark anymore. The price is HIGH. With discounts for goodsam and loves connect it was $50/night for 30 amp. The dog park at this loves is very nice and the spaces are okay. But it’s loud all night because it’s a truck stop. I like the idea of this for loves but the price needs to reflect it. $25/night. No one is staying longer than that and it’s a better deal.

Deam Lake State Recreation Area Campground

    Nice Campground, Pretty Lake

This campground is very family-friendly and fun. There are horse trails, a beach, and great water for swimming/kayaking/canoeing. It is pet friendly as well. The bath house in our area was older but fairly clean. We felt like there was good spacing between the sites, and we weren’t too close to our neighbors. Beautiful in the Fall!

Guide to Wellington

Camping near Wellington, Kentucky offers diverse terrain options from wooded settings to lakeside sites. Several campgrounds accommodate pets with specific amenities and restrictions. Most pet-friendly locations maintain designated hiking trails ranging from under 2 miles to multi-day routes through mixed forest environments.

What to do

Hiking through forest trails: Jefferson County Memorial Forest offers extensive hiking opportunities with varying difficulty levels. One visitor notes, "Lots of trails ranging from 1.5 to 13.0 miles through gorgeous mixed forest of old and new growth deciduous and coniferous hardwoods." These trails provide good exercise for pets and their owners while exploring the natural landscape.

Swimming and boating: Lake Shelby Campground provides water activities for campers with pets. "They have paddleboats and such for rent at a reasonable price," reports one camper. The campground features multiple docks and boat launches, though some guests mention water quality can vary seasonally.

Trail exploration: Charlestown State Park Campground offers challenging trail experiences. A visitor shared, "Enjoyed rose island trail lots of cool history to learn. Also enjoyed trail 6 with the waterfalls." Many trails are pet accessible but require leashes at all times.

What campers like

Secluded camping options: Horine Reservation Camping at Jefferson County Memorial Forest provides peaceful camping near Wellington. A camper notes: "The seclusion here and the closeness to nature is a grand slam! Due to fall, the sites seem much closer than they are due to the thinning foliage." Ground conditions are notably soft from accumulated forest debris.

Full hookup availability: Brooks RV Park offers complete RV services in a secure setting. A visitor reports: "Nice sized sites, reasonable priced compared to the KOA, all good full hookups, nicely kept, and most importantly it is in a safe country setting surrounded by large trees and on a dead end road." Each site includes individual picnic tables and fire pits.

Good site separation: Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground provides well-spaced camping areas. One reviewer mentions, "Plenty of room for camper and car, big grass area and nice bathhouse." Many sites offer enough separation for pets to have space without disturbing neighbors.

What you should know

Airport noise considerations: Multiple campgrounds sit under flight paths. One visitor to Jefferson Memorial Forest explains: "The campsite rests below the route to Louisville's international airport. For an hour or two in the morning and in the afternoon huge jets fly right over the campgrounds." This affects pet owners whose animals may be sensitive to loud noises.

Train activity: Louisville North Campground experiences regular train traffic. A camper warns: "OMG, the trains. All night, every night. I'm a heavy sleeper and it sounded like the trains were going to crash into our RV and we were across the row from them." This noise may disturb dogs with sound sensitivity.

Seasonal considerations: Many campgrounds experience high seasonal traffic. During peak summer months, campers report fuller facilities and limited site availability, especially at lakeside locations. For pet owners, this means more interactions with other campers and their animals.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas for children. At Lake Shelby, "There was an awesome play area for the kids and the shower facilities were clean." This provides recreation options for families with both children and pets.

Water safety: Deam Lake State Recreation Area offers family-friendly water options. A visitor notes: "Perfect lake to kayak for a beginner bc no wake zone." This creates safer conditions for families with pets who want to enjoy water activities.

Group site availability: Taylorsville Lake State Park Campground accommodates larger family gatherings. "We camped there in July for my son's birthday party. We were near the restroom facilities which were very clean. The camping area was recently mowed. Plenty of parking for guests and tents." These facilities work well for families bringing multiple pets.

Tips from RVers

Site length variations: Campgrounds near Wellington have diverse parking limitations. One RVer at Lake Shelby noted: "Very weird at first as the sites are 20 feet long, but they allow front ends to stick out." This requires planning for RVers traveling with pets to ensure adequate space.

Utility upgrades: Some facilities have updated their services. An RVer mentioned: "All new electrical and water, all sites have 50 amp despite the website stating only 30 amps as recent update." These improvements provide better climate control options for pets staying in RVs during temperature extremes.

Spacing between sites: RV campers note varying site proximity across locations. Brooks RV Park offers "nice sized sites" while Louisville North Campground has sites "literally on top of each other." Site selection impacts pet containment and comfort when camping.
