Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground on the Kentucky River

Great park next to the river

This is a small well maintained campground right on the Kentucky river. It is down in a hollow which makes it secluded and quiet. There is a dock and a boat ramp. The customer service is exceptional. Under new management since November, they are making some very nice upgrades. 30/50 amp full hook ups with a number of pull throughs. The sites next to the river are level and easy to back into. There is a pavilion and a pool. It is about 30 minutes from Lexington and about 8 miles to the closest town. The one lane road coming in might give you the willies but it is worth it. They have 5 WiFi connections making this some of the best campground WiFi I have ever had. This is a lovely spot with nice amenities.

    Cummings ferry campground

Small park restrooms and showers. Very clean. Nice pool. Camp store offers basics. Fairly close to shopping groceries etc. staff was friendly 30/50 amp service didn’t count the number of river view sites. But quite a few. Some sites have 20 X 12 elevated decks. Full hook ups. Pet friendly. Was very quiet the week we stayed. Didn’t feel like bringing the camper home so payed for another week and drive back the following week. Cell service. Isn’t the best WiFi was available if I remember. Correctly rates were reasonable

    Pioneer Playhouse Campground

This is all about the theater...not the camping

This place has some fascinating history and a unique outdoor summer stock theater experience. The oldest outdoor theater in Kentucky with 5 productions running through the summer months. Definitely a good time and casual dining evening with stories of many famous faces that have graced the stage: John Travolta, Lee Majors, Jim Varney...to name a few. The campground has 35 sites with little elbow room; all have electric(30 amp) and water, gravel/grass pads, shower facilities and bathrooms, and they do have a"rustic" dump station. Many of the sites seem to have long term tenants...so this is best for a one night stop and a show. The town of Danville has what you need for supplies and dining, loads of historical sites in the area and of course there is a Bourbon Distillery that must make the list of activities. pioneerplayhouse.com/visit-us/campground/

    The Farm RV Resort

The Perfect Getaway: The Farm RV Resort Review

If you’re looking for an idyllic spot to park your RV and unwind, The Farm RV Resort is an absolute gem. Nestled in a serene countryside setting, this resort offers the perfect blend of nature and comfort. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed by the friendly and helpful staff who made check-in a breeze. The resort itself is beautifully maintained, with spacious, level sites that provide plenty of room for both our RV and outdoor activities. We particularly loved the well-kept grass areas and the full hook-ups, making it super convenient for extended stays. The resort has a rustic charm that makes you feel like you’re getting away from it all, yet it still provides modern amenities. One of the highlights of our stay was the peaceful atmosphere. The surrounding farm landscape, with its rolling fields and calm breeze, is perfect for those who enjoy the quiet outdoors. We spent our evenings watching sunsets, enjoying the fresh air, and even taking walks around the grounds. For those looking for activities, the resort offers a variety of fun options. There’s a cozy clubhouse with games and a small store for essentials, plus a community fire pit where guests can gather and share stories under the stars. We also enjoyed the nearby trails, perfect for hiking or biking. Whether you're a family looking for a relaxing retreat, a couple seeking a quiet getaway, or an RV enthusiast wanting to experience the countryside, The Farm RV Resort checks all the boxes. We left feeling refreshed, relaxed, and already planning our next visit!

    LockRidge Park

    A Diamond in the Rough

This is a true gem and one not to be missed. Unfortunately, our stay was limited to one night, however, we will definitely be returning to take advantage of the many amenities included. Full hookups, laundry, bath house, general store, tastefully designed accommodations, activities, and even an outdoor theatre; everything you need for an enjoyable long-term stay. The Site was quite large and accommodated our 24 ft rig and truck, and FH, which were very clean and well placed. Our site also provided partial shade, which in the warmer months would be very beneficial. Not to mention, the beautiful views with a lovely trail and lookout over Dix River that runs behind the property. Management/Owners were incredibly hospitable and friendly. We loved our overnight stay at Lockridge, it was quiet, peaceful, and absolutely beautiful. We camped at LockRidge Park in a Travel Trailer.

*TIP ~ Dix River runs behind the property, nearby there is a marina, waterfalls, trout fishing, and many other recreational activities. This venue also hosts events and has Harvest Host accommodations.

Cummins Ferry RV Park, Campground on the Kentucky River

    Heaven!

We had the most amazing time and actually ended up extending our stay here because of how lovely this spot is. Secluded and tucked away along the river. Very clean sites, both back-in and pull-through. Full hookups. They have live music and a food truck on Saturdays. Entry is by card-swipe only, so very safe. Peaceful spot without much noise. Little trail along the river to walk.

My Old Kentucky Home State Park Campground

    Cute Little Campground

Small but well kept campground. Bathhouse is older but clean. Some sites have views of the golf course. Very friendly staff that works hard to maintain the grounds. Campground is right in the middle of town, but you will still have to drive anywhere you want to go. We toured the My Old KY Home historic house and gardens with our kids (13 & 5) and everyone enjoyed it. We stayed two nights in site 18 and it was tight backing in, even in our 23 foot Airstream, not very private but it is close to the bathhouse. The best site, in my opinion, is site 26. It is more private, has a wide pad and a little "yard" to the side. Site 20 is one to avoid. It's at the corner of the loop, across from a dumpster, right next to the bathroom AND the dump station is practically in the site. It even sits at a lower elevation than the dump station so imagine how nasty it could be on a rainy day. There are a few of pull through sites that would be good options if you are just using it as a stop over.

Guide to Stanford

Camping options near Stanford, Kentucky typically range from primitive tent sites to full-service RV campgrounds within a 30-mile radius. The region sits at elevations between 750-1200 feet in the Knobs region of Kentucky, creating varied terrain around waterways like Green River Lake and the Kentucky River. Summer temperatures average 85-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall offer milder conditions around 60-75°F.

What to do

Hiking trails access: Smith Ridge at Green River Lake features unmarked trails through wooded areas. "I gave Smith Ridge 5 stars because it offers a lot of great fishing spots and beautiful views. There isn't but maybe one trail there, and it's unmarked," notes Jessica C. about COE Green River Lake Smith Ridge.

Water activities: Green River Lake offers swimming, boating, and fishing opportunities. "Lots of clean facilities and stuff to do, mostly water-related (who knew KY has beaches?). Some easy trails on site," says Dan N. Holmes Bend Campground provides easy lake access with "a beach right next to the marina," according to Thomas R.

Wildlife observation: Many campgrounds feature abundant wildlife. Kenny P. mentions about Wilson Creek Recreation Area: "Primitive campground that sits in the middle of the old ORV area. The old 4 wheeler trails now make good hiking trails and cool off at the gravel beach at the end of the road."

What campers like

Spacious camping areas: Many campgrounds offer well-separated sites. "The sites were spacious and well-maintained," notes a reviewer about Holmes Bend, while Maze M. says about COE Green River Lake Smith Ridge, "I am currently here and I gotta say I am impressed. The bathrooms are clean, I am not close to my neighboring campers, the parking spots are huge, and it's a great area to walk around."

Waterfront camping: Several campgrounds provide sites directly on the water. Kenny P. says about Pikes Ridge: "The best campground on GRL!!! Only flaw.... no showers!" John adds, "Sites are very spacious, there are trails for hiking, a playground and a beach."

Natural settings: Wooded and secluded camping areas are available. About Wilson Creek, Leandra P. writes, "There are about 6 campsites along a stream with two pit toilets. It's a short walk to the lake which is pretty and has a lot of fish who were jumping the evening I was there."

What you should know

Cell service variations: Reception can be unpredictable across campgrounds. Todd C. reports at Smith Ridge: "Practically no cell service with Verizon or AT&T," while Candy H. notes, "I give it 4 not 5 because no cell signal so it's rustic camping which is good for some but not so much when alone."

Bathroom conditions: Facilities vary significantly between campgrounds. Jeremy K. mentions about Smith Ridge: "The new bathhouse was nice. The old bathhouse needs some updating. They were both clean." Christina S. adds, "One bathroom hasn't had electric in two years and another women's bathroom only has hot water in one shower and the hand dryers don't work."

Seasonal closures: Many campgrounds operate on limited schedules. Wilson Creek Recreation Area was permanently closed as of October 1, 2023, according to Lori B., who notes "Any future opening, for instance, during hunting season, will be determined by KDFWR." Most Green River Lake campgrounds close for winter.

Tips for camping with families

Beach access options: Several campgrounds offer swimming areas for children. "There is a boat ramp (perfect for my kayak), docks to go fishing off of, lots of nature and trails," says Jenn N. about Cummins Ferry RV Park.

Playgrounds and activities: Some campgrounds provide recreational facilities. Maison H. reports about Cummins Ferry: "We had kids that fished and played in the playground and sat by the fire every night!" Thomas R. notes about Holmes Bend, "Playgrounds are cleaned everyday."

Security considerations: Some remote campgrounds have regular patrols. Leandra P. mentions about Wilson Creek: "I felt at ease because it was so heavily patrolled," while Jessica C. adds, "The area is also patrolled at random hours throughout the night to make you feel a little safer."

Tips from RVers

Power reliability: Electrical service can be inconsistent at some RV campgrounds near Stanford, Kentucky. Lindsey M. warns about Smith Ridge: "They have a known power issue, 30amp service went out several times at the pole. Their solution was to use less appliances. There are other campgrounds on the lake that I would choose instead."

Site leveling challenges: Not all sites are level for larger rigs. About Camp Nelson RV Park, Randy G. notes, "A bit tight for larger rigs (ours is a 40' DP)," while Whistle P. states about Cummins Ferry, "The sites here are not level. We used our normal 2x green blocks for the Jack, but needed all 10 of our leveling blocks, plus 8 paving stones."

Year-round options: Some RV campgrounds near Stanford operate throughout winter. Randy G. mentions Camp Nelson RV Park is "Off the beaten path, quiet, and friendly," while Thomas R. reports about Holmes Bend, "Some sites only have electric at the higher numbers but there is a station to fill your tank with drinkable water."
