What campers like
Quiet atmosphere: Many campers appreciate the peaceful environment at certain campgrounds. "This was a pleasant and easy full service rv park to enjoy a day of peace off the road + great overnighter. People were very nice and attentive with lots of RV manipulation help," says a visitor about Dad's Bluegrass Campground in Franklin.
Outdoor recreation access: Cabins near waterways provide immediate recreation opportunities. "What a well maintained place to camp! The sites were not very private, but we there are sites right on the water, which made the limited seclusion less of a concern. Nice trails to walk and nearby places to rent a boat," mentions a visitor about Moutardier Campground.
Family amenities: Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park offers activities beyond basic cabin amenities. "I love this park! Camping, cabins, hiking, horseback, swimming, and even mini golf. There are numerous trails, and a plethora of wildlife. We even saw a bald eagle within 15 minutes drive from the park," reports a camper at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park.
What you should know
Seasonal availability: Many cabin facilities operate on limited schedules. "The sites are hard to back in with a camper, we had to buy longer extension cables and a longer water hose, sites are very close together, the activities were good had to pay for them not very much," notes a Pennyrile Forest visitor about summer accommodations.
Varying levels of amenities: Cabin options range from basic to fully equipped. "The park is multi-leveled with the views and some cool rock formations. The beach has some confusing parking signs, but we figured it off. It was busy and had some loud visitors with loud vehicles and loud vehicles," explains a camper at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park.
Highway noise considerations: Some locations experience traffic noise due to proximity to major roads. "You can tell this park had a hayday, but it has passed and the maintenance has not been done. Our site was very narrow and had a huge drop off, we were told the neighbors beside us about flipped theirs trying to back in," reports a camper at Barren River Lake State Resort Park Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Multiple facilities offer child-friendly play areas. "They have a huge pavilion for events, nice pool, showers, and very clean restrooms," notes a camper about Dad's Bluegrass Campground.
Cabin selection for groups: When traveling with multiple children, seek cabins with adequate space. "My family of 6 (me, my wife, and four boys 9yrs and under) camped here for a week. We had a great time. We were a little further from Mammoth cave than we wanted to be, but the campground was fun," explains a visitor at Barren River Lake State Resort Park.
Halloween events: Fall cabin rentals coincide with special holiday activities. "Family friendly Halloween fun. Has a decorating contest with trick or treat in the campground. Safe and clean with lots of restrooms and lake front sites," mentions a visitor at Moutardier about their October stay.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Choose pull-through sites when available for easier setup. "Very clean Campground. Easy pull through seats, and shower and toilet facilities are very modern and clean. We didn't find the highway noise to be too big of a deal," reports a visitor at Dad's Bluegrass Campground.
Extension cords: Pack longer utility connections for some locations. "Our site was slightly uphill where I had to park to reach the water hookup. The water hookup is very close to the ground and leaked for me. Made it very hard to connect the hose and pressure regulator. Used all of my 25 foot hose to reach my connection," notes a camper at Dad's Bluegrass Campground.
Leveling challenges: Some cabin and RV sites require significant leveling. "Sites are level and clear of obstacles. They left plenty of space for vehicles and rigs. We had a pull through patio and the space had a giant beautiful tree that was very helpful in the heat," explains a camper about the Bowling Green KOA.
