Best Campgrounds near Morehead, KY

The eastern Kentucky landscape surrounding Morehead features multiple camping options centered around Cave Run Lake and Daniel Boone National Forest. Twin Knobs Recreation Area, located directly in Morehead, provides developed campsites with electric hookups, drinking water, and boat access to the lake. Just minutes away, Zilpo Campground in Salt Lick offers similar amenities in a wooded setting. For those seeking more primitive experiences, Paragon Dispersed Camping Area provides free, minimalist camping with basic toilet facilities but no hookups or drinking water. Most campgrounds in the Morehead area operate seasonally from April through early November, with a few locations like Clear Creek Recreation Area and Outpost Campground remaining open year-round. Summer weekends typically require advance reservations, especially for lakeside sites. As one camper noted about Zilpo Campground, "All the spots in the H Loop seemed like they would be great for a visit... Amazing seeing the Milky Way one evening." Cell service can be limited throughout the region, particularly in more remote areas. Many campgrounds prohibit alcohol consumption, though policies vary by location. Weather conditions remain mild through most of the camping season, with fall offering spectacular foliage and typically less crowded conditions.

Water access represents a significant draw for campers in the Morehead area, with Cave Run Lake providing opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming. Visitors frequently mention the mature forest setting as a highlight, with one Twin Knobs camper noting, "This portion of Daniel Boone National Forest is peak beauty in the summer, the beautiful mature trees and well maintained sites make camping so much more enjoyable." Boat Gunnel Group Campground offers a unique option for larger parties, allowing groups to reserve an entire section with private facilities. Site leveling can be challenging at some campgrounds, particularly for larger RVs, so campers should research specific site conditions before arrival. The region's natural beauty, dark night skies, and relative seclusion make it popular with families and those seeking a quiet woodland retreat.

    Ashland Huntington West KOA

    worked for overnight

We were surprised to find the store open when we arrived at 6, but woman inside was a trip. She could not seem to figure out how to do anything and talked to herself the whole time. Check in took about 20-30 minutes! She was very friendly though and explained how to get to our site. Tried to get propane- first she said she didn't know how to do it, then she decided she did, but wound up being clueless. She did let us change our site because it was so far from the bathroom. We had to go down a crazy steep narrow hill to get to the lower area. Thought it might be quiet but wound up on top of a busy road. Ok for an overnight. Huge street lights over us. Sites a little junky looking.

    Beautiful, peaceful. Very kind owner

We got to RRG national forest campground and every spot was booked. So headed on over to Woodstock campground. I had seen this campground across from Creation Falls road. The owner is so kind and helpful. We had an awesome weekend at this primitive campground

    Sandy Springs Campground

    This place is a gem!

Love this place! The owners are a family and they treat guests like an extension of family. We stayed at RV campsite 10 which was a river front site. It was full hook up which was convenient. The view of the Ohio river was really lovely. There was a boat launch very close by and we took our inflatable SUPs and put in at the boat launch which was nice and sandy. The owner gave us lots of good ideas of things to do. We ended up going on two nature hikes in preserves that are part of the Arc of Appalachia, one being literally across the road from Sandy Springs. We also drove down to Portsmouth to check out the flood murals at the suggestion of the owers which was pretty cool. I loved having a view of the river in one direction and a view of the Appalchian foothills in the other direction. This place is peaceful, quiet, and you can tell the owners are very thoughtful about infrastructure with the experience of their campers in mind. There's also small cabins to rent, including a houseboat!

    Sandy Springs Campground

Great site, right on the river

This is our first time here, and we very impressed! Owners are wonderful, very accommodating. We arrived a day late, and they were so friendly and helpful! Even upgraded us to a site with a deck. Right on the river bank, everything is very clean. Will definitely make this a yearly trip!

    Paragon Dispersed Camping Area

    Quiet and on the river

Nice camp spots right right on the river. Lots of fish jumping and minimal traffic noise. I will say, there was some trash and lots of broken glass (watch your doggos so they don’t cut their paws!!). Overall really enjoyed the spot.

4 Guys RV Park at Red River Gorge

    Friendly and accommodating

This is a great place to camp if you are looking for a local area driving distance to the mini trails in the gorge. There are not very many mature trees., and the highway is very loud. However, they have full hook ups, and the lots are very spacious., they have an amazing restaurant called toads in the back of the camp, we had amazing food and drink drinks there, and they have beautiful outdoor seating.

    Grayson Lake State Park Campground

    Nice small campground

Great campground close to the lake and golf course. Some unleveled sites but overall a good place. Some of the water hookup can be a bit far as well.

    Virginia Point Campground

    Tight, easy park

You're parked with rigs on either side of you, but it's clean and friendly with kids playing. It is a neat spot on the river and easy inexpensive stop when traveling through. 50 amp hook up and water. Porta potties.

Guide to Morehead

Cave Run Lake forms the centerpiece of camping spots near Morehead, Kentucky, covering 8,270 acres with 83 miles of shoreline. The region sits within the northern section of Daniel Boone National Forest where elevations range from 800 to 1,200 feet. Most campgrounds operate from April through early November, with average summer temperatures between 75-85°F, while a few locations remain accessible during winter months.

What to do

Kayaking on Licking River: The Ole Cornfield campground offers river access with kayak rentals or shuttle service for visitors bringing their own. "We brought our kayaks and were shuttled up river by the staff. The staff are the friendliest and helpful people that you could ever meet," notes camper Karen P., adding that the trip "takes a couple of hours to get back down to their campground."

Hiking local trails: Daniel Boone National Forest Boat Gunnel Group Campground connects to several trail systems. "The trails are well maintained," reports Karen P. Nearby Clear Creek Rec Area offers additional hiking opportunities with one camper mentioning, "Nice hiking trails from campsite."

Exploring caves: Carter Caves State Resort Park contains multiple cave systems with ranger-guided tours available. "Various levels of caving experience at a reasonable cost," notes Bryan G., who visited with scouts. The park features "lots of hiking, fairly well marked. Almost every hike is relatively short with an arch or natural bridge as a feature."

What campers like

Riverside camping sites: Campers at The Ole Cornfield particularly enjoy the waterfront locations. "We just spent a relaxing long weekend at this campground. My grandkids loved playing in the river catching crawdads and tadpoles. Perfect for wading," mentions Karen P. Another visitor notes it provides "Beautiful spot right on the water."

Dark night skies: The region offers excellent stargazing opportunities away from city lights. At Zilpo Campground, camper Taylour B. states the site is "Perfect for stargazers. Nobody is there during the weekday. But the weekend is usually packed."

Clean facilities: Twin Knobs Recreation Area maintains well-kept grounds and restrooms. "The campground is in a wooded area and each campsite is separate by woods from the nearby sites. There are shower and toilet facilities close by," reports Stephen H. Another camper notes, "The staff are constantly working to keep everything clean and repaired."

What you should know

Limited water hookups: Some campgrounds have restricted water access points. At Twin Knobs, camper Karen P. reports, "We had a lot of kids, so we ended up running out of water. I had to carry water from about 500 or 600 ft away. They also need more water hookups."

Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds have uneven terrain. As one Carter Caves camper mentioned, "You will need extra water hose and extension cords to get hooked up in a lot of the sites."

Early reservations needed: Zilpo Campground fills quickly during peak season. Camper Aaron I. advises it's a "Nice secluded area with a lot of privacy," but popular sites book months in advance.

Variable cell service: Coverage remains spotty throughout the region. At Clear Creek, one visitor reports, "No cell signal (verizon)," while other campgrounds have limited connectivity depending on carrier.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly water play: The Ole Cornfield offers shallow water perfect for children. "The grandkids love to play in the river, which is about 1 to 2 feet deep at this location. Great for wading and catching minnows, crawdads, and such," notes Karen P.

Playground access: Outpost Campground & RV Park provides recreational facilities for children. "There is a great, centrally located playground where the kids were able to run around after being in the truck for eight hours," reports Jason G., who stopped with his family.

Group camping options: Boat Gunnel Group Campground works well for family gatherings with multiple units. "We usually have 3 campers with a tent or two," reports one regular visitor who appreciates that "you can let the kids run around and play without worrying about traffic."

Tips from RVers

Power management: Some campgrounds have electrical limitations. At Boat Gunnel, Karen P. advises, "The only problem that we have is that I kept blowing the breaker on the box when I was hooked up alone. It says 70 Amps and I am 50 Amps. We ended up running our hot water heater off of propane to fix the problem."

Site selection: Sheltowee RV Park & Cabins offers RV-friendly spaces but with some limitations. "The sites are a little tight but overall very nice and kept up to date," reports Brad L.

Seasonal drainage: Weather impacts site conditions differently across campgrounds. At Twin Knobs, one camper reported, "Our campsite (A-30) drained the rain off really well," despite experiencing continuous rainfall during their June visit.
