    Triple J RV Park

    Good for overnight

We called ahead to see if they had sites available for the night. Arrived just before the office closed at 7pm. Got a pull-through full-hookups site. The campsite pads are level, nice and wide, gravel like the roads, with wide grassy/dirt/gravel areas between and beautiful mature shade trees everywhere. Also several friendly cats acting as camp hosts, welcoming us at the office when we checked in, greeting us every time we stepped out of our rig, and checking out all the campsites and trees regularly. ☺️ Our site had a picnic table and a clay/Terra cotta statue of a bear eating honey, with a hole in his belly as a small fire ring. Most sites had a covered picnic table. Full hookups worked fine.

Bathrooms were ok; dead crickets on the floor.

    We would stay here again.

Big Bluestem Hell Creek Area Campground — Wilson State Park

Perfect spot for camping, Kayaking, swimming, fishing, hiking, biking… or chillaxing!

Big Bluestem Campground Site 78! Prime spot with large shade tree to block western sun. 20’ from water’s edge with path to drop kayaks in, swim or even sit lawn chairs into the water to cool off. Noted as largest saltwater and clearest lake in Kansas. 30/50A/120V and water hookups. Concrete pad. Clean showers a few hundred yards away. Trash bin in middle of loop. Marina two loops away; about 4 minute drive. Outstanding rock formations, reminds me of Utah. Water levels effect access to some formations. Great time, great weather, we’ll be back soon! T-Mobile service 1-4 bars. Streamed HotSpot for ROKU without issues.

Big Bluestem Hell Creek Area Campground — Wilson State Park

    AKA Big Bluestem

This area is the Big Bluestem campground. There is a shower/restroom area at the beginning, hiking trails and primitive sites. Then you enter Big Bluestem campground which has two loops. One has pull through sites and the other has mostly back in sites. Each site has electric, water, fire ring, and picnic benches. There are some really nice views from the outer sites.

    Creek Side Resort

Not bad. Not bad at all.

The good things are the nice people who run the campground, the little store they have with all kinds of camping and RV stuff. They have a little pond with a dock and a paddle boat. Showers and restrooms are clean and private.

It's not a scenic show-stopper. Gravel lots, but most are pull-through and easy to use.

We stayed in our pop-up camper that fell apart during a super intense storm. Not the campground's fault, but scared the tar out of us. They were nice enough to let me store the camper for a little over a week until I could come back with tools and parts to repair it.

Super nice people. Nice town nearby. Great place to stay if you're going to be in Hays.

Switchgrass Hell Creek Area Campground — Wilson State Park

    Switchgrass/Grama campgrounds

Switchgrass and Grama campgrounds are in the same area. Switchgrass is a primitive area with picnic tables and fire rings. You can drive up to these sites and there are some really nice ones next to the water. There is also an area that is shaded. Grama are electric sites with the outer loop being pull thrus and the inner back in. They too have fire rings and tables. There is a restroom and water spigots in the area.

Yarrow Otoe Area Campground — Wilson State Park

Most Coveted Campground of the State Park

Wilson’s Lake in Kansas is something of a departure from surrounding areas of Kansas. If you take a moment to pull just a slight distance off the major highways and toward the Wilson’s Lake area you will be pleasantly surprised as the world begins to roll and open up into vibrant hillsides winding their way though the area.

I honestly stopped myself for a moment and checked the map thinking to myself in such a cliche way,“ We are not in Kansas anymore.”

But just as the map proved, I was in fact still in the same state, I noticed more and more signs for Wilson’s Lake State Park and found it was a must see while visiting the area.

The road winds you down to the park and down to what seems like a dead end just at the Yarrow Campground. This campground is one of the most coveted in the park because of its location, its convenience and its size.

When visiting Wilson Lake you might want to consider this loop for improved camping.   When I visited I noticed that the roadways in and out of the campsite were well structured to provide ample movement for larger units with back up capabilities.   While this loop also offers tent camping, it really is designed for the small to mid-size RVs.

Each campsite was equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, although I must say that some of the tables in this area were lacking a bit and needed some updating.    The sites also included water and electric hook ups with reasonable spacing between sites.   Pull- in/ back-in sites were graveled and semi level while the area between the spaces were grassy and lush.    During summer months this would be a perfect retreat for families looking to have a little fun together but still have convenience.

What I liked most about this particular site was the proximity it had to the swimming beach and also the restrooms.   Within 100 yards of one another you could access flushing toilets and showers or fun in the sun.     This was the best overall campground for accessing both of these amenities and therefore I believe would bring about the most fun for the family overall.   Additionally, a playground was located nearby.

I would definitely recommend arriving early if visiting on a weekend or making reservations online to ensure a site at this campground in particular.   The most popular of this lake region, Yarrow, stays booked well into the later portion of summer on weekends and is hit or miss on weekdays.

    TIPS:

    * Check out the rental shop just outside of the park where you can find anything from a paddle board to a canoe.   Also this is a great place to check in if you are needing a few last minute supplies.

    * Make sure to check out park rules at the kiosk before entering, this can be very valuable information especially when crowds are flocking to the area.

Wheatgrass Hell Creek Area Campground — Wilson State Park

    Beautiful lake views

This campground has 51 sites at $21 per night. Each site has electric, water, picnic table, and fire ring. The outside loop sites are pull through with beautiful lake views. The inner loop is back in sites with a view of the lake but nothing like the outside one. This area has few trees for shade and unfortunately no wind break. There is a swimming beach and a small fishing hole for kids. We camped at site 45 and 46 and had a small beach area that we could put our kayaks in. We had a beautiful view of the water and rolling hills. Each time we opened our door we instantly saw the lake and for most of the time it felt as if we were the only ones there. One thing that frustrated us was that the sites were either reserved or said One Day Only and there was no one at the camp host spot, the booth, or the office so we had to keep moving.

Kaw Campground— Glen Elder State Park

    Room to roam

Excellent lake and open country! Big hunting fields to run dogs in. Good WiFi, cell service and water hooks ups in March! Looks like there is year around camping. They have prime site with fire pits, grills, concrete pad, tie down chains for wind. Bath house was being updated so no idea the condition. Pheasant can be heard in morning and evening. Lake is huge! Lots of different camping options around. Playground for kids at Kanza campground

Guide to Wilson

Wilson Lake camping areas sit 1,516 feet above sea level in the Smoky Hills region of Kansas, where limestone outcroppings create distinctive landscapes. The lake spans approximately 9,000 acres with 100 miles of shoreline, making it a central destination for recreation in this part of Kansas. The surrounding countryside features rolling prairie hills transitioning between eastern woodlands and western plains ecosystems.

What to do

Hiking trails: The Lucas Park area connects to cliff-side trails with unique geological features. "There are play grounds for the kids. Really nice clean baths and the roads were pretty easy to push a wheelchair over," notes Cheryl T. about Lucas Park.

Swimming beaches: Multiple parks offer swimming areas with varying amenities. "Swim beach is a short drive from the camp ground itself. Scenic hiking trails," says a visitor to Lucas Park. At Minooka Park, campers have convenient beach access: "We had a tent spot on the D loop next to the water. Not much shade available but temps definitely cooled down at night! There was a swimming beach just a few steps away from our tent spot which was why we chose it."

Boating and kayaking: The clear waters of Wilson Lake are popular for various watercraft. One Lucas Park visitor explains, "Water is crystal clear and affords people the opportunity to swim fish boat etc." Another notes, "We were able to launch our kayaks easily lets say 50 ft down."

What campers like

Quiet weekday camping: Several campgrounds offer free or reduced-price camping on weekdays. "Monday - Thursday this place is free if you are in a non electric standard site," reports a camper at Minooka Park. Similarly, at Lucas Park, "The primitive campsites were free Monday evening through Wednesday evening."

Spacious sites: Campgrounds near Wilson offer good separation between sites. A visitor to Triple J RV Park notes, "The campsite pads are level, nice and wide, gravel like the roads, with wide grassy/dirt/gravel areas between and beautiful mature shade trees everywhere."

Lake views: Many sites offer direct views of Wilson Lake. "We woke up to a nice view of the lake. The way they had placed the sites was in a way that most all of them had views of water," explains a Lucas Park visitor. Another camper describes the experience: "You can sit at a picnic table, under luscious trees overlooking the lake and the houses beyond."

What you should know

Wind conditions: The open prairie landscape can create challenging wind conditions. At COE Wilson Lake Sylvan Park, one visitor notes, "No lake views. Sylvan campground is situated at the spillway of Wilson lake. There are no water views here." More critically, a Minooka Park tent camper warns: "WINDY, WINDY, WINDY!!!!! This campsite is NOT for tents! We arrived hoping to cook and hang out on the lake but the 18mph winds had us huddled near the car as a winds shield."

Water temperature in showers: Multiple campgrounds have shower facilities, but water temperature control can be inconsistent. A Minooka Park visitor reports, "My ONLY complaint is that the bath houses had no water temperature control in the showers. It was scalding hot water only in every shower on a 100 degree day."

Seasonal facility closures: Some amenities may be closed during off-peak times. One camper at Sylvan Park shares: "Our own experience is more like a 3 because while the campground was open, the bathrooms were not. Water was not available either. If this happens to you, jump in your vehicle, make a right from the park and there is a boat launch area about 5 mins from the campground with a nice composting toilet."

Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds: Several rv parks near Wilson, Kansas feature playground facilities for children. As one Lucas Park visitor notes, "There were play grounds for the kids."

Swimming access: Choose campsites with easy beach access. At Set in Stone Cabins and RV Park, "This property is small and comfortable. The cabins are SO sweet! Kay & Richard have clearly put a lot of love into this spot."

Bathroom facilities: Campground bathrooms vary significantly in quality and cleanliness. A Minooka Park visitor reports, "Clean vault toilets and clean shower facilities with perfect water temp and pressure." By contrast, at Sunflower RV Park, one camper found "The shower was very unappealing... The men's restroom, according to my husband, was disgusting."

Tips from RVers

Highway access: The Wilson Lake area offers several rv campgrounds with convenient interstate access. One visitor to Fossil Creek RV Park notes, "The good thing is that is just 2 min from the highway 70."

Site leveling: Most RV parks provide level gravel sites. Triple J RV Park receives positive reviews for its sites: "Nice level gravel pads. New full hook ups. Nice place to stop for the night."

Overnight convenience: For travelers passing through Kansas, Wilson Lake rv parks make strategic overnight stops. "If you are traveling I 70, this is a great spot for a night to break up the drive. Only a few miles off of the highway, clean, quiet, with water and electricity. We stop here almost every trip. Sites are spaced out nicely."
