Cimarron Campground - Cimarron National Grassland

    Unexpected Beauty

The Cimarron Grassland is an amazing part of the Great Plains ecosystem and definitely worth a look when driving through the southwest corner of Kansas. It will not be what you’re expecting! The sunrises alone are worth the price of admission, which was just $7 per night.

Just off the park driving tour road, this little campground sits between small ponds in a larger wetland area within the Cimarron River. Each site is spacious with the usual picnic table, fire ring, and tent pad. Vault toilets and potable drinking water are available all year round, we just had to wait for the faucet to thaw after freezing up overnight.

The area is fantastic for bird lovers, and we watched flocks of Starlings tuck themselves into the marsh grasses for the night. Raptors, warblers, and many other bird species use the area as a fly-over stop during migration. Hiking is close by on the Sante Fe Trail which follows the original path of the old wagon trail through the plains, biking and other motorized recreational vehicles are allowed in certain areas. While the terrain might not be challenging, the sandy soil makes any long walk or ride just a little bit more difficult.

The nearby town of Elkhart affords the usual amenities for groceries, gas, and a few restaurants. The National Grassland office is also in town if you want more information about the area. Check out our blog about our time traveling through southern Kansas...and unexpected treat!

    Prairie Wind RV Park

    All the Comforts

This is a tiny (5 pull-thru slots) RV park run by the county in Montezuma, Kansas. Perfect for an overnight stay, it has 30 and 50 amp hookups, sewer and water. All for only $20/night. Each slot is a gravel drive with a concrete pad on the side that has a concrete picnic table. It’s right off KS-56, but we didn’t find it too noisy. I would definitely stay here again if passing by this way. Even has the added bonus of a small adjacent field where we were able to kite our paramotor wing for a bit.

    Hamilton County State Fishing Lake

Primative campground, no facilities that we found

Driving through the small roads of Kansas in the late afternoon we decided we had better find a place to park our van .  We found this park,  and as it was dark,  we really couldn't see our surroundings very well, we drove off the road and found a level spot and turned in for the night.  It was okay, being late october I think we were the only people in the park.  In the morning  we looked around and we might have been in the wrong side of the park.   The lake was dry from where we could see.  All we wanted to do was rest for the night and get going in the morning so it was good for us.

    Cimarron Campground

    Remote Grasslands Camping

Great small campground / rec area. It was clearly very popular among hunters/fishermen during season as we were the only campers there that were not hunting or fishing. It’s a day use area, too. There’s only vault toilets but there is drinking water available. No power or dump stations, but generators were welcome for the RV folks. Fires are allowed when there are no active fire restrictions and they have great fire pit rings. Pay attention to fire restrictions on the USDA campground site. No fire wood for sale, so bring your own. The sites are first come first serve since they’re non-reservable according to the USDA website. I had heard there were great trails on the grasslands but it was hunting season when we were there so I recommend researching that first before coming here and expecting to hike safely. The grounds are kept decently well. There’s no camp host but when we were there all the other campers were very quiet / chill. In fact we were alone on the whole grounds until the hunters rolled in for the evening. The sunset & sunrise were gorgeous here. It’s buggy of course because you’re in the grasslands and near ponds, so be prepared for insects as well. We heard a pack of animals loudly roll through in the night, pretty sure they were coyotes. Trash cans available, and great picnic tables available.

All in all, this was a wonderful site and we’re glad we made the drive. It’s a lovely campground with the grasslands’ nature surrounding you on all sides. We camped in a Roof Top Tent (RTT) and the lot was level, decently private. We camped in #6. People clearly like to spread out here when it’s not crowded, that was nice.

Word to the wise: if you’re traveling here on Stevens County roads with gravel and 65mph speeds, sloooooow down and get off to the side as people approach you from the opposite direction. Those “Stevens Co not responsible for broken windshields” signs are there for a reason.

    Just passing thru

Small rv park great for just passing thru

Not in outdoorsy location. Right next to highway. More of a place to stop over than a campground. Clean and well managed. Friendly staff and townspeople. Great Mexican food nearby.

    Clean Campground

I stayed here two years ago for 3 nights.  Clean restrooms.  Quiet (October).  As I recall it was free, probably due to the off season.  Not much to do or see in town but as a safe place to rest you can't beat it.

    Cheap water & electric sites

Close to a small town. Cheap ($10/night for 30 amp & water). Great to recharge the batteries. Small playground, a bit run down. Quiet with few people. Small pond & mulberry trees.

    Beymer Water Recreation Park

    Great overnight stay

Nice quiet place with covered picnic tables (a bit weathered) , pretty level grassy spots. ~8 - 30 amp (no 50 amp) w water... and some more primitive camp spots as well. We were the only ones there so it was a great stop for $10! Stayed May 2021 - was dry when we arrived, rained that night - no problems leaving. We went in the entrance off the main road and had to weave around to the site but believe there is an entrance off the dirt road right before the park.. (refer to a satellite view vs GPS)

    Quiet and empty

Quiet spot, 2 miles out of town. Little highway noise, for $10 with electric and water, it’s perfect! Good sunset view, small pond ( requires membership to fish) lots of birds around.

    Very minimal.

In the middle of seemingly no where... Great one night stop. A few electronic & water hook ups. No dump station that I've found. Dogs should be on leash, but no one here and no one to bother.

    Great water sport stop.

If you play on the water, then this might just work for you. There were no water hook ups. There is power available but every site is shared so no privacy. They are under trees so shade was good. Sites are unimproved and very soft when wet. Folks are generally nice.

    Good for a stop over

We stopped on the way home to Colorado. It's cheap, level and has 30 amp power and water. Cell coverage is a solid 4bar 4g LTE with Verizon.

For $10 bucks it works. We came through in November and the water was turned off. It has a bathroom but we didn't use it so I can't report on its condition. The park was clean.

    Easy yet secluded

It’s flat, easy to get to.. bathrooms are just okay. Not the cleanest, but it’s something. Each spot has water and electric. Plus a covered shelter with picnic tables. For $10 can’t beat it

    Beymer Water Recreation Park

Plain and simple flat chunk of dirt, cheap. With electric!

Evrything in the other reviews is accurate except for the water. That review was in August. I am here now in very late November. The water is turned off. But electricity and a flat spot of dirt for 10 bucks is a great deal. The only downside is there is really no view. The land is flat in all directions. There are three ponds in the area which are marked membership only. It looks like they are very low, One is dry. There are four pairs of flat campsites on sandy dirt and a little grass. Each pair share an electric pedestal with 2 30 W outlets. Likewise each pair of sites share a pair of picnic tables under a weather shelter. Outside of town. You can hardly hear the highway

Very basic campground with full hookups. People living there in spartan campsites close together on a a grassy mound. Shower house needed attention and was very basic.

    Syracuse Sand Dunes Park

    Fun In the Sand

    Limited spots

    Amazing staff

    Clean and maintained

    Small pond for fishing swimming

Great sand dunes for riding at..they have poker runs and atv/utv rodeos several times a year. Brand NEW bathhouse.

Sites are taken quickly so reserve well ahead of time. There is another private campground (more of a dirt lot with hookups) past the main area.

Usually family friendly but can get rowdy on poker run weekends.

Gas and groceries about 5 minutes from park

    One night on the plains

Great small campground! Not busy, sites are well maintained, there is water, trash bins, and pit toilets as clean as they come. Verizon has good coverage out here. This is definitely one of my favorite campgrounds so far in the Plains states. Looks like they’ve made some recent updates to be more accessible.
