The approach roads to some campgrounds can present challenges, particularly after rain. One reviewer cautioned about Arkalon Park: "After a scary, mushy slip slide drive through deep soft red dirt, we arrived to the bottom of the Cimarron River valley." Most parks provide dump stations, though Prairie Wind RV Park lacks onsite restrooms, requiring self-contained RVs. Cell service remains reliable at parks near towns, while more remote locations experience limited connectivity. Seasonal closures affect some facilities, with Arkalon Park operating only from April through mid-October. Pet policies vary by location, with most allowing leashed pets in designated areas.

    Arkalon Park

Soft, sliding deep dirt road from the highway

After a scary, mushy slip slide drive through deep soft red dirt, we arrived to the bottom of the Cimarron River valley for an overnight stay. 50 amps and water on a concrete pad, plus a shade cover over a picnic table, fire ring, and grill. Our 34 ft motorhome made it, and we prayed it wouldn't rain before time to leave. Nice campground with trails, a playground, and 3 well placed underground tornado shelters. Great staff (camp hosts) and a well run park.

    Beymer Water Recreation Park

    Great overnight stay

Nice quiet place with covered picnic tables (a bit weathered) , pretty level grassy spots. ~8 - 30 amp (no 50 amp) w water... and some more primitive camp spots as well. We were the only ones there so it was a great stop for $10! Stayed May 2021 - was dry when we arrived, rained that night - no problems leaving. We went in the entrance off the main road and had to weave around to the site but believe there is an entrance off the dirt road right before the park.. (refer to a satellite view vs GPS)

    Prairie Wind RV Park

    All the Comforts

This is a tiny (5 pull-thru slots) RV park run by the county in Montezuma, Kansas. Perfect for an overnight stay, it has 30 and 50 amp hookups, sewer and water. All for only $20/night. Each slot is a gravel drive with a concrete pad on the side that has a concrete picnic table. It’s right off KS-56, but we didn’t find it too noisy. I would definitely stay here again if passing by this way. Even has the added bonus of a small adjacent field where we were able to kite our paramotor wing for a bit.

Cimarron Campground - Cimarron National Grassland

    Unexpected Beauty

The Cimarron Grassland is an amazing part of the Great Plains ecosystem and definitely worth a look when driving through the southwest corner of Kansas. It will not be what you’re expecting! The sunrises alone are worth the price of admission, which was just $7 per night.

Just off the park driving tour road, this little campground sits between small ponds in a larger wetland area within the Cimarron River. Each site is spacious with the usual picnic table, fire ring, and tent pad. Vault toilets and potable drinking water are available all year round, we just had to wait for the faucet to thaw after freezing up overnight.

The area is fantastic for bird lovers, and we watched flocks of Starlings tuck themselves into the marsh grasses for the night. Raptors, warblers, and many other bird species use the area as a fly-over stop during migration. Hiking is close by on the Sante Fe Trail which follows the original path of the old wagon trail through the plains, biking and other motorized recreational vehicles are allowed in certain areas. While the terrain might not be challenging, the sandy soil makes any long walk or ride just a little bit more difficult.

The nearby town of Elkhart affords the usual amenities for groceries, gas, and a few restaurants. The National Grassland office is also in town if you want more information about the area. Check out our blog about our time traveling through southern Kansas...and unexpected treat!

    Syracuse Sand Dunes Park

    Fun In the Sand

    Limited spots

    Amazing staff

    Clean and maintained

    Small pond for fishing swimming

Great sand dunes for riding at..they have poker runs and atv/utv rodeos several times a year. Brand NEW bathhouse.

Sites are taken quickly so reserve well ahead of time. There is another private campground (more of a dirt lot with hookups) past the main area.

Usually family friendly but can get rowdy on poker run weekends.

Gas and groceries about 5 minutes from park

Guide to Ulysses

Ulysses, Kansas camping areas sit in the High Plains region at approximately 3,000 feet elevation. The surrounding landscape features shortgrass prairie terrain with seasonal extremes—summer temperatures often exceed 90°F while winter nights can drop below freezing. Campgrounds in this region operate primarily from April through October, with limited wintertime availability at facilities closer to town centers.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Arkalon Park provides access to fishing lakes where campers can try their luck. "Has big playground for kids and miles of hiking trails, even lakes to fish. Staff very friendly and helpful for anything you need," reports Chris B. about Arkalon Park.

Golf access: Camping near the Bentwood golf course gives outdoor enthusiasts easy access to golfing activities. "Great place to stay. Right by Bentwood golf course. Concrete pads and picnic tables," notes Keri F. about the amenities at Frazier Park.

Walking trails: Several rv parks Ulysses, Kansas include walking paths for exercise. "Walking path. In small town with access to gas and groceries," mentions Keri F. The trails at Arkalon Park extend for miles along the Cimarron River valley, providing extended hiking opportunities in an otherwise flat region.

What campers like

Budget-friendly rates: Prairie RV Park operates on an honor system with full hookups at competitive rates. "Full hook ups, level sites. Pay on the honor system. No amenities but towns nearby are cute. Great spot if you are passing through," shares Lara K. about Prairie RV Park.

Clean facilities: Campgrounds in the region maintain clean restrooms and showers. "Clean restrooms. Quiet (October). As I recall it was free, probably due to the off season. Not much to do or see in town but as a safe place to rest you can't beat it," reports Dave B. about his stay at Frazier Park.

Shaded sites: Despite the open prairie landscape, Western Star RV Ranch offers well-maintained spaces with surrounding grass areas. "All gravel and rock park surrounded by grass. Sunrise and sunsets were gorgeous," notes Elizabeth S. The ranch provides a welcome respite with its community facilities and open views.

What you should know

Weather considerations: Summer storms can create challenging access conditions on unpaved roads. "You wouldn't believe it when you're approaching it, since it seems near a road and behind the train tracks, and it seems to be near a refinery. But this 16-site, city-run park and campground is the kind of place I had been hoping to run across on my long drive," explains Eben O. about Arkalon Park.

Self-contained requirements: Some campgrounds require self-contained RVs without onsite facilities. "We wanted to stay, but we do not have a restroom in our camper, and there is not one on site," explains Larry about Prairie Wind RV Park, noting the absence of restroom facilities despite the dump station availability.

Seasonal operation: Operating seasons vary considerably, with several parks closed during winter months. Arkalon Park operates from April 1 to October 15, while Star Crest Motel RV Park runs from April 1 to November 1, requiring winter travelers to verify availability in advance.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Families benefit from dedicated play areas at select campgrounds. "Nice sites and price (only $5 for tent). Squeaky is really doing a good job keeping things clean and maintained!" notes Chuck M. about his experience at Arkalon Park.

Safety features: Some campgrounds include tornado shelters for severe weather protection. "Nice campground with trails, a playground, and 3 well placed underground tornado shelters. Great staff (camp hosts) and a well run park," Jennifer B. explains about her stay at Arkalon Park.

Spacing considerations: Prairie Wind RV Park offers concrete pads with picnic tables, creating defined family spaces. "This is a tiny (5 pull-thru slots) RV park run by the county in Montezuma, Kansas. Perfect for an overnight stay, it has 30 and 50 amp hookups, sewer and water. All for only $20/night. Each slot is a gravel drive with a concrete pad on the side that has a concrete picnic table," describes Christopher R.

Tips from RVers

Site preparation: Level, concrete pads make setup easier at several parks in the region. "Level concrete pads and covered picnic table. The RR trestle you see is the Samson of the Cimarron!" mentions Les G. about the sites at Arkalon Park.

Cell service: Connectivity varies significantly between parks, with better service closer to towns. "Very chill park, friendly host and all hookups functioned great. Filled up fairly quickly by 6pm but still plenty of room for more," reports Jose` D. about Seven Winds RV Park, noting the reliable hookups available.

Road conditions: Access roads to campgrounds can deteriorate after rain. "It is a decent place for an overnight stop. Pricing is low. Full hookup, pull through spots. A lot of train traffic. Not bad, though, if you're used to train or city sounds," explains Chad A. regarding the noise factors at Seven Winds RV Park.
