    Lake Shawnee County Campground

    Perfect little county campground

Beautiful gated lakeside campground in SE Topeka that can accommodate almost any camper type. There are pull through and back in sites. All are gravel with a picnic table and fire ring. The sites are fairly level and easy to navigate. There is a playground, picnic pavilion, swim beach, laundry, fishing dock and 2 clean bathhouses. The sites are close together, but most will have a view of the lake. There are 50 and 30 amp hook ups and water hook ups. No sewer, but there is a dump station on-site. Rental bikes are near the office to ride around the trail that goes 7 miles around the lake. The whole lake area has a lot going on: softball and baseball fields, multiple playgrounds, disc golf, golf course, tennis courts, paddle boat/canoe rentals, amazing gardens, etc. Several restaurants including fast food, pizza, donut shop, Chinese, 2 bar and grills, and Mexican food are very nearby. There is also a Dollar General, urgent care clinic, liquor store and 2 gas stations. It’s a great location just a few miles south of 1-70. Normally sites are $20/night, $18/night for seniors. Highly recommend!

    Walnut Grove RV Park

Close to downtown Merriam and KC

My husbands job took us to Merriam Kansas and we needed a place to stay, we made reservations at Walnut Grove. We were surprised to find it in the middle of a neighborhood. The staff were very nice and helped us into our site. The sites were on gravel and very close to each other. Walnut Grove was both short and long term campers. There were no tent sites. We had full hook-ups, cell service, and free wifi. We had a picnic table and fire ring and could purchase firewood at their store.

During our stay I was awakened to a startling noise and couldn't figure it out until I went outside and saw the walnuts falling onto our camper. By the time we left, everything was covered(stained) tarnish brown. The park is in a walnut grove hence its name. They had a dog run which was not fenced but provided some grass for the pups. They had a laundry mat and clean showers with good water pressure. There also was a strange noise coming from the trees and when I asked the office what it was they thought it was locusts. I knew that was not their noise so I had to find what it was. After searching, I found that it was tree frogs 🐸 and it was their call. So if you are there in September listen and you will hear them, they love the walnut trees.

    Weston Bend State Park Campground

Quiet campground close to many Kansas City attractions

Campground is hilly, sites are level, gravel pads. Lots of space between sites. Electric sites, no water, but water spigots were scattered around the campground. Majority of sites had shade. Most sites are back in, there are 2 pull through sites and 2 family sites. Firewood is available for sale on the honor system near the camp host. Nice shower facilities and laundry available (one washer, one dryer). Regular trash dumpster and also recycling. Pit toilets also available. Dump station across from dumpsters and recycling. Entrance gate closes at 9 pm.

Sunflower Campground — Hillsdale State Park

    Very Clean and Very Relaxing

The Park: We love this park, it’s massive, and really pretty. They have so much to do (listed below). Sunflower Loop is our favorite and has full hookups. There are more primitive loops as well. It is ADA accessible. There was not a tornado shelter as of 2018. This is one thing that should be mandatory given its proximity and being further away from potential shelter. Excellent camping on the lake. Lots of water activities available.

Sites: level, clear, easily accessible. Sunflower loop is widely spaced and plenty of room for larger RVs.

    Cellular: decent cellular signal.

    Lake Shawnee County Campground

Even without full hookups the quiet well kept campground is worth it.

The Beauty and peaceful campground suits my wife and I. The showers and laundry areas are clean and well kept. The staff is very nice to talk to. The big draw back is no sewer hookup. There is a dump station close to the entrance that is free for campers staying here. The other draw back is during winter the water is shut off. Again there is water at the dump station. This said the staff showed me plans that have been approved to add pull through sites, full hookups, and cabins. We really enjoy the beautiful sunrises and sunsets and all the geese on the lake.

    Weston Bend State Park Campground

    Enjoyable Stay

Getting to the state park off I 29 and through the countryside was easy as the route had Weston Bend SP signage. We followed the SP signs to the campground(CG) where the gate was not manned so we headed to get water, but someone was sitting in the dump station waiting for another person to arrive so we went around this one-loop CG to see if there was a convenient spigot. There are spigots but with a larger rig, you will block the road, and/or you will be on a hill. We went back around and the person moved so we could get water. After that, we headed to pull through site 28 with electric(50/30/20 AMP) only. The site is long but has a 1/4 moon turn so we had to pull back around to get better positioned on the pad so we could disconnect our 39’ 5th wheel and F450 for our 3-night stay. There were tree branches overhead that we could not avoid. RVers next to us in site 30 had just arrived as well and were having trouble getting their travel trailer unhitched and leveled due to the pad’s slight incline and unlevel asphalt. They got their trailer positioned so they could get somewhat level. We got a solid two bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile. Due to our proximity to Kansas City, we got a lot of OTA channels. A satellite connection would be iffy in most sites here due to the number of mature trees. The trees in a lot of sites would also scrape the top of larger rigs. There’s a variety of sites with most being good for regular trailers versus tall rigs, and tent sites. They have a nice shower house with 1 washer and 1 dryer both for$1.50. There are also vaulted toilets here and there. There’s a 1.7-acre fenced dog park that includes one large area for large dogs and two other areas with one dedicated to smaller dogs. The dog area is at the front park entrance away from the campground and it would be a long walk to get there, so we drove up. There are a lot of hiking trails here plus an old tobacco barn that’s worth a look.

Guide to Ozawkie

Seasonal weather around Ozawkie, Kansas can affect camping conditions throughout the year. Summer temperatures often reach into the 90s, while spring and fall bring milder weather with occasional thunderstorms. Most rv campgrounds near Ozawkie remain open year-round, though amenities may be limited during winter months when temperatures can drop below freezing.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Several ponds at Topeka / Capital City KOA offer relaxation for anglers of all skill levels. "They have a catch and release fishing pond" notes one visitor, while another mentions that the "nice pond and some short but relaxing hiking trails" provide a peaceful countryside experience just outside Topeka.

Cultural attractions: Museums and historical sites around the Ozawkie area make for worthwhile day trips. A camper at Deer Creek Valley RV Park recommends visiting "the NOTO Arts & Entertainment District, the Capitol, the Topeka Zoo, and the Evel Knevel Museum" - all just minutes from their campsite. Another traveler specifically mentioned the Evel Knievel museum as a highlight of their trip.

Local breweries: Check out craft beer options within a short drive of camping areas. "In the way in, less than a mile from the campground is Happy Basset Brewing Co. - highly recommend, as well as the food truck that was on site On the Hook!!" shares a visitor who enjoyed both the beer and food truck offerings during their stay.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Bathhouses and common areas receive regular maintenance at most Ozawkie-area campgrounds. At Walnut Grove RV Park, a guest appreciated the "Clean 24-7 bathrooms, showers and laundry facilities" and called it "A little hidden Gem." Another camper noted the "family owned with great hosts" atmosphere that made their stay comfortable.

Spacious sites: Many campers mention the generous space between sites as a positive feature. One review describes how at Deer Creek Valley RV Park, "the pull-thru RV pads are huge and the grass in between is sizable for each." Another camper commented on the "ample space around your site" which enhanced their camping experience.

Recreational amenities: On-site amenities keep campers entertained without leaving the campground. "They have a Swimming pool. They have a catch and release fishing pond. There is a Playground. They also offer a weight room and an adorable activities room with air hockey, a library, & a pool table," details a visitor to Topeka Capital City KOA, highlighting the variety of activities available.

What you should know

Road and railway noise: Highway proximity affects sound levels at several campgrounds in the area. A camper at Kansas City West-Lawrence KOA reported that "trains passed by really loudly all night long - it finally stopped at about 5am" and another noted trains "every thirty minutes or so." Consider packing earplugs if you're sensitive to noise.

Reservation timing: Popular RV campgrounds near Ozawkie fill quickly during peak seasons. "We were supposed to camp at site 18, but it was not level and had tire ruts all the way to the back of the site" explains one visitor who had to switch sites. Booking well in advance, especially for holiday weekends, ensures better site selection.

Variable site quality: Site conditions can differ significantly within the same campground. "Our site was easy to level" mentions one camper, while another notes "The sites aren't very private and road noise from the nearby highway can be heard throughout the night if you're tent camping." Research specific site numbers when making reservations.

Tips for camping with families

Playground options: Kid-friendly play areas provide entertainment at several campgrounds. A camper at Basswood Country RV Resort shared, "Kids loved playing on the playground in the morning while we packed up," and another noted the "awesome play area for kids" that kept children entertained throughout their stay.

Swimming facilities: Pools offer relief during hot Kansas summers. "There is a nice, but small, salt water swimming pool that was refreshing after driving 8 hours," commented a visitor to Topeka Capital City KOA, while another mentioned that the pool at Deer Creek Valley RV Park "was warm enough to get all the way into (but still truly refreshing!)"

Organized activities: Weekend events provide structured entertainment for young campers. One reviewer noted, "Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie." Check with campground offices about current activity schedules.

Tips from RVers

Hookup positioning: Water and electric connections vary in placement between campgrounds. One RVer at Topeka Capital City KOA observed, "The water and sewer hookups are in the middle between sites, which can make hooking up somewhat awkward depending on the layout of your rig. A longer water hose and sewer extension are a good idea."

Leveling challenges: Some sites require additional work to properly level an RV. "We quickly found out when we auto-leveled that site 1 was not a level site as our passenger side tires were off the ground," shared a visitor to Love's RV Hookup-St. Joseph MO 235. Another camper noted, "The site was on a slight hill- but wasn't terrible to level out."

Site selection strategy: Researching specific site numbers improves the overall experience. "We were in a 'deluxe rv site' that backed up to the highway. So tons of highway noise all night," warns a camper, while another advises, "I would definitely stay here in the future but will know to secure a site that isn't shared with others."
