Gunn Park features pet-friendly campsites with electric hookups for $10 nightly, while tent sites cost $5. The camping area includes both drive-in and walk-in access with dedicated sites for RVs and tent camping areas. Pets must remain leashed throughout the park, with owners responsible for waste cleanup. The bathrooms are basic porta-potties, typical for this small municipal park setting. Crossroads RVs and Cabins offers more amenities for pet owners, providing full hookup sites and pet-friendly cabin accommodations. The park is consistently described as peaceful even when multiple campers are present, with people generally being polite and respectful of others with pets.

Crawford State Park campgrounds accommodate pets at multiple camping areas including Oak Point, Rocky Cove, and Lonesome Point. Dogs must be on leash at all times and are permitted at waterfront sites. The concrete pad sites at Rocky Cove are particularly well-suited for RVs with pets, offering level surfaces and reasonable separation between campers. Some sites feature shade trees providing protection from summer sun for pets, while others are more exposed. Water access points throughout the park allow dogs to cool off during summer months. Campground hosts are noted for being helpful to campers with pets. Wildlife encounters require keeping dogs properly secured, as deer and other animals frequent the camping areas, particularly at dawn and dusk.

      Four Oaks RV Park

Goof Transit camping with great staff

Super helpful staff for late check-ins. It is a good RV campsite when you are on the move and need a place to stay near the the high way (a bit noisy with traffic) and traveling with a pet. They have a place for dogs to play.

      Osage Prairie RV Park

      At Best an Overnighter

We read raving campground (CG) reviews on Osage Prairie, especially how nice the owners were. Based on reviews, we decided to spend three nights here to break up our way south for our annual RV maintenance appointment. Check in was easy and the lady was very friendly with a sense of humor. We were then escorted to pull through site 14 with FHUs. The way the long pull throughs work is that another trailer can back up to you. It was nice that the utilities and picnic tables were on opposite sides. We were told we probably would not get anyone in behind us. About 30 minutes after arrival, a small trailer came in without reservations and was placed right up behind us. We concur that the lady owner who checked us in was very nice. The other owner who escorted us to our site was, in our opinion, a little on the sarcastic side, especially after we had cut our turn on their grass getting into our site. This CG is an A-Typical overnighter where they cram you in. The park filled up every night after our Thursday arrival but we do realize they are in the business of making money. Good news is there were grass areas between sites so you can get slides and awnings out. WiFi was below average for a CG this size. No cable or OTA but after moving our satellite dish around to avoid trees we got it to connect. We got three bars on Verizon. The park is convenient to get on/off I-49 (exits 203 and 202A are both fine) but you’re going to get highway noise day and night. The CG is about 1/2 short termers and 1/2 long timers, and several of the long timer rigs gave the CG that “trailer park” look. I picked up numerous cigar and cigarette butts off our site to include trash in the little grill. We did not enjoy the older Dodge diesel trucks starting up at 5:00 AM to head out to work or wherever they were going. On a more positive side, they have a nice stable with one horse, which you can pet but not feed or ride (guess someone tried to ride him once upon a time). Shower and laundry facility looked clean. They have a little gift shop in the office containing a few camping supplies and leather goods. Again, from previous camper reviews, we thought Nevada (Nee-vay-dah) would be worth touring around but we were not impressed. We grocery shopped at Woods and Walmart and both were on the low side of okay. Our final “not impressed” came when we saw long timers letting their dogs do #2 in the tent area and not pick it up. Then they locked their 3 dogs in their trailer and left early Saturday and had not returned by the time we left the following Monday morning. Their poor dogs barked on and off all day and night. We informed the owner and he said he had told them in the past to not do that anymore. This place is definitely about the frosting, not the cake. We should have just stayed one night and moved on, but we stayed too long and experienced too much. We won’t be back.

      Kimmys At Caplinger

      Best Family Campground in Missouri

Kimmy’s is amazing!  Always friendly and clean. Lots of activities for any outdoor adventures. Hiking kayaking swimming and lots of laughs come with Kimmy’s crew. They go out of their way to make your stay wonderful! If the pond on site is not big enough Stockton Lake is just minutes away or maybe you enjoy kayaking the Sac River is very close as well. Shuttle service is right up the road if needed. Keep your eyes peeled you may just find a message rock or two. We frequent Kimmy’s several times each summer and by far our absolute favorite campground in Missouri. And they are pet friendly too!

      Kamp Siesta

Nice, quiet campground with lots of parking spots

We camped here in October 2021 to close out our season and as a waypoint to Beaver Lake. This is a very nice, quaint little municipal campground. The shower house was clean enough, the spots were all well-maintained, and everything worked as advertised. There is a city park right around the bend that has all kinds of stuff, and there are basketball courts, volleyball courts, and horseshoe pits within short walking distance.

It may have been because of the time of year since the campground was about to close, but we were the only campers there for the whole week, which was totally awesome. There are 42 spots at Kamp Siesta, three of which are pull-through, so you cannot possibly beat this place for $10 a night.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the wooded trail right behind the campground. You definitely forget you're in Kansas back there!

    Guide to Fort Scott

Fort Scott, Kansas camping sites cluster around the city's municipal parks and within a 25-mile radius of Crawford State Park. Summer temperatures average 85-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall offer milder conditions in the 60-75°F range. Most campsites in the region operate from April through October, with limited winter availability at select locations that maintain water access during freezing temperatures.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Gunn Park, campers can fish from the shore without needing boats. "Adult children (seniors) lol are there every day looking to catch dinner," notes Neil S. The park offers both shore fishing access and hiking trails.

Bison viewing: Prairie State Park Campground in nearby Missouri provides a unique opportunity to see free-roaming bison. "If you are interested in bison sightings, this is the park for you," writes Deborah C. Visitors should maintain safe distances as "you get to be around buffalo without fences. It is a surreal experience," according to Luke B.

Mini-golf recreation: Osage Prairie RV Park features mini-golf on-site. "Great site with mini golf for the kids too," mentions Evan L. This activity provides entertainment without leaving the campground, particularly valuable during multi-day stays.

    What campers like

Spacious sites: Oak Point Campground at Crawford State Park receives praise for site dimensions. "This place was easy, pretty and well appointed. Great site next to river, across from bath, laundry and showers," according to Rhonda D. Multiple reviewers note the waterfront positioning.

On-site dining: Crawford State Park features restaurant options that campers appreciate. "The on-site restaurant is a nice perk when you simply don't want to cook," says Scott G. This eliminates meal preparation for visitors who prefer convenience during their stay.

Privacy between campsites: The Bourbon County Fairgrounds offers spacing that creates a peaceful atmosphere. "We were guided to a large grass area and backed in next to an electric panel with multiple outlets... Peaceful and quiet during the evenings and nearby to the downtown and historic fort," notes Rick G.

    What you should know

Site elevation variations: Rocky Cove Campground features concrete pad sites that provide level surfaces. "Rocky Cove has concrete pad sites, nice and level, both on and away from the lake," explains Bruce. This terrain consideration matters for RV setup and tent placement.

Weather exposure concerns: Some sites lack shade coverage during summer months. "For the summer, don't stay in site #118 (a lakeside site), as it has no protection from the sun. The sun sets across the lake and although the view is great, the sun bakes the campsite from morning until 9 pm," advises Bruce.

Highway noise levels: Several campgrounds experience traffic noise due to proximity to major roads. "Next to busy highway and trains," mentions Kevin L. about Osage Prairie RV Park. This ambient sound affects sleep quality and overall camping experience.

    Tips for camping with families

Swimming opportunities: Crawford State Park offers swimming access during warmer months. "Amazing swimming beach, modern bath house and great restaurant," shares Stephanie D. The dedicated beach area provides safer water recreation for children compared to open shorelines.

Wildlife viewing precautions: When camping with pets or children, be aware of wildlife activity patterns. "The bison roam free here, although the small campground area has fences and/or cow grates to keep them out," notes Hanna T. about Prairie State Park.

Holiday decorations: Gunn Park features seasonal displays during winter holidays. "This place is a small park that has lots of hiking trails... they had a super decorated for Christmas," mentions Jason T. These decorations create additional visual interest for younger campers.

    Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements: Lonesome Point Campground at Crawford State Park offers sites with varying elevation. "Great primitive spot near the front with no electric but water within walking distance. Remote and lovely," says Jeremy G. RVers should bring leveling blocks.

Power hookup limitations: Gunn Park has specific electrical restrictions. "Most of the sites are 30 amp and no dump station. Water and electric only," advises Neil S. This impacts power usage planning for larger RVs with multiple systems.

Site selection strategy: When camping at Crawford State Park, bathroom proximity varies by campground. "The odd thing about the campground is that there is no bathroom or showers. At all. You have to go to the next campground over, Oak Point," explains Bruce about Rocky Cove Campground.
