    Chase State Fishing Lake

    Primitive and quiet

There are several areas to set up camp, each area has different advantages: proximity to vault toilets, picnic tables, privacy... The area is easy to navigate and sites are lakeside.

    Napawalla Park

Nice city park with camping sites, electricity, restrooms and pavillions.

I pitched a tent here  during a bicycle camping weekend in late April 2020 and the restrooms were locked due to Covid restrictions.  I was the only camper at the time, but there were a few people using the disk golf area.  Nice park with plenty of trees and I was close to a pavilion with a fireplace and picnic tables.  Convenient gas station a block away.  I believe  tent camping was $3.50 for primitive and $10 with electricity.

Bluestem Point Area — El Dorado State Park

Bed bugs!!! Don’t rent Cabin 5 Larkspur

I’m exhausted, the last 12hrs has been a dumpster fire. Last thing we expected was a bed bug infestation. Woke at midnight with a few annoying bites, on further inspection we were covered in bed bugs, urrrgghh. After picking them off our pj’s and getting over the initial shock we went home to quarantine our clothes, shower and sleep. Returned in the morning to checkout and trash our sleeping bags and pillows. Everyone is disappointed, and I’m out of pocket for 2 nights accommodation and 4x sleeping gear...whoever the host is should be ashamed of themselves, I’m trying to warn the next people, this cabin is booked solid but in reality uninhabitable! The porch is also infested with burrowing bumblebees, scary for kids and adults alike.

    Chase State Fishing Lake

We Didn’t Even Give Kansas a Chance

On our road-trip to Utah, we dreaded having to camp in Kansas, until a friend recommended this spot. This stunning little lake is a free site with plenty of fire rings right next to a road. PERFECT car camping. And even has a clean little bathroom. Stunning views of rolling hills and cattle. Places to fish. A little trail that leads up a small hill. Stunning stunning stunning views of wildflowers and rolling hills. Great sunrise and sunset views! Phenomenal place to stop if you’re driving through Kansas. A bit of a detour from I-70, but totally worth it.

    Hillsboro Cove

    Nice shaded campground

Hillsboro Cove is a nice shaded campground located at Marion Reservoir. This campground has electric and water hookups. There is a covered picnic area at each site with a grill and fish cleaning area. There are also fire rings at each site. There is firewood for sale at the entrance and a guard shack with a camp host across the way. There is also a dump, wash house, bathrooms, and a group area with very large covered picnic shelter and 9 electric hook ups if needed.

Bluestem Point Area — El Dorado State Park

You know you’ve been camping too much when....

....the camp host offers you dog food and asks if your homeless....haha

Bluestem Point Rocks & Rolls! My SOBF (significant other boyfriend) and I have camped here over six times. We didn’t even leave when they had the semi-floods and crazy lightning storms in May & June 2019 (and we only live 30 minutes away). The picnic tables are great because they are shaped like a sail and you can turn them to block the wind or sun. You can also put a tarp on top and block out the rain. The camp hosts (Bob and Jean) are so friendly and accommodating. They also keep the place spic and span.

Boulder Bluff Area — El Dorado State Park

    Beautiful and peaceful

We stayed in the equestrian loop. All but a couple primitive sites are back-in. The layout of the fire rings, grills and picnic tables are all weird... Not consistent and usually on the wrong side of your trailer. The parking pad was nowhere near level, so you'll want to plan for that. The trees are lovely. You're very near the water and the breeze was beautiful. The toilet at the loop are pit. The bath house was not clean and many of the showers didn't work.. Water is lukewarm but water pressure was great. No stall doors on toilets or showers. We used the city of El Dorado dump station. The park is massive. Lots of amenities in El Dorado. And a quick jump to Wichita. We will be back.

    Chase State Fishing Lake

Lovely lakeside sites in the scenic Flint Hills of Kansas

The relatively private campsites were mostly empty on a mid-September weekend. Plenty of shady primitive sites all along the north shore, ample parking, a small seasonal swimming beach, a boat ramp & dock, lots of fishing piers, and a decent size reservable group shelter for gatherings. The one vault toilet near the info kiosk is the only restroom facility. There is little to no light pollution out here, so enjoy stargazing and the moon set against an immense dark sky. Definitely walk across the dam from the road to the short trail to the waterfalls. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and the little towns of Cottonwood Falls and Strong City are just a few minutes away by car. Take a drive on the Flint Hills Scenic Byway at sunrise/sunset on Highway K-177 which stretches north to Council Grove and south to Cassoday from Cottonwood Falls. You could also check out the Flint Hills Wildlife Drive that starts just off Hwy K-177 on Sharp Creeks Road in Bazaar and goes south to Cassoday (country roads, make sure your tires are in good shape).

History: the 109-acre lake and 383-acre wildlife area were created in 1954.

Overall a beautiful location and pleasant experience. I'd go back again!

Guide to El Dorado Lake

Tent campsites near El Dorado Lake provide options for Kansas campers seeking water recreation opportunities. El Dorado Lake spans 8,000 acres in the Flint Hills region with fluctuating water levels that affect campsite availability seasonally. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F while spring and fall offer milder camping conditions.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Harvey County East Park offers productive fishing with "lots of fish" according to Jesse H., who noted the campground's family-friendly atmosphere. Bass, catfish, and crappie are commonly caught from shorelines or boat docks.

Swimming in designated areas: The swimming beach at Harvey County East Park provides relief during hot summer months. Rita G. described it as a "relaxing and clean swimming area" with maintained facilities nearby.

Boating access: Many lakeside sites at Wind Hill Campground include boat docks for convenient water access. Campers can launch from multiple points around the lake, with no-wake zones in place near swimming areas and campsites.

What campers like

Quieter weekday visits: Leann V. found Harvey County East Park "beautiful and quiet" during off-peak times, noting "the trees were still pretty full with fall foliage." Weekday camping typically means fewer crowds and more privacy.

Shaded campsites: Bluestem Campground features mature trees providing natural cooling during summer months. Stanleigh S. particularly enjoyed "the large and shady sites" that offer respite from Kansas summer heat.

Water proximity: Many campers appreciate having direct lake access from their sites. Terry M. recommends specific locations, stating "always try to camp at catfish point. Nice and quiet and a great peaceful place to relax."

What you should know

Shared water sources: Campers should prepare for limited water access at some parks. Meghan B. noted at Harvey County East Park that "water hookups are shared between sites and currently have signs reading, '15 MINUTE TIME LIMIT. Do Not Leave Water Hose Connected, Even If You Have A Splitter.'"

Facility conditions: Restroom and shower facilities vary in quality and maintenance. According to Meghan B., "showers/restroom facilities are a bit rough, but there if you need them." Bringing sanitizing supplies is recommended.

Reservation systems: Chautauqua Hills Campground requires advance reservations during peak season. Sites with electricity and water hookups book quickly, especially for summer weekends and holidays.

Tips for camping with families

Bring water toys: The sandy beaches and swimming areas make water recreation a primary activity. Jesse H. confirmed the appeal for families: "This is a great place for families to enjoy spending time with one another!"

Plan for weather changes: Kansas weather can change rapidly, with thunderstorms common in late spring and early summer. Tent campers should choose sites with adequate drainage and bring extra tarps or rain flies.

Choose weekday visits when possible: South Rock Campground and other area facilities experience significantly higher traffic on weekends. Bj T. noted that while campgrounds are "fairly quiet," they "can get rowdy during holidays."

Tips from RVers

Inner loop preferences: RV campers should note electrical options vary by location. Stanleigh S. advises that at Harvey County East Park, "all of the 50 amp sites are on the inner loop and all of the lake side sites are 30 amp."

Level site selection: Many tent campsites near El Dorado Lake are on sloped terrain. RVers should bring leveling blocks, especially for lakeside sites where ground can be uneven.

Extended stay considerations: RVers planning longer visits should confirm dump station availability and water restrictions. Camp Wood YMCA and other facilities have varying policies regarding extended stays during peak seasons.
