    Cottonwood Cove Park Campground

    Tiny and QUIET!

Cottonwood Cove Park was the fifth campsite we rolled into in this tri-state area looking for a spot that we actually liked, and boy did we score! This is a little municipal park with only 12 sites, water/electric/cable TV for $22/night. Be aware that there is no dump station here. There's a small bath house that's presently closed for COVID-19 precautions.

Driveways and the road through the campground are crushed white gravel, but there are small concrete pads at each site for the rig and patio area. Large cottonwood trees tower throughout the campground. There are tiny campers and large fifth-wheels here, both. There's a campground host occupying one site, and you pay the host. Spacing between sites is very, very generous -- kudos to Dakota City for not cramming people into this place just to double the revenue.

The campground buts up right against a pretty natural stretch of the west bank of the Missouri River, with a boat launch and interpretive platform discussing Lewis & Clark's expedition that passed through here. The campground itself is tucked right into the middle of a neat, tidy residential neighborhood, such that it almost feels like you're part of the neighborhood.

It's been amazingly quiet during our stay. We've barely seen our neighbors, much less heard them even though the campground is mostly occupied. There are several rigs here that are long-term, presumably they're working at the massive Tyson Foods plant just up the road.

Cell service on Verizon is an impressive 4 bars, 42ms ping/65.6 Mbps down/24.8 Mbps up/3ms jitter.

We'd stay here again in a heartbeat.

    Scenic Park

    Along the Missouri River

Scenic Park Campground is in South Sioux City along the Missouri River. Our campsite had a river view, picnic table, and fire ring. The campground is part of a large park and was full hookups with cable and wifi included. Our site was a pull through. The area was clean and had a nice appearance. There was also 4 unique modern looking cabins and a tent area.

The park also has tennis courts, soccer fields, and baseball fields. There is a swimming pool and playgrounds, along with trails. The trails I loved were along the river. The only con was that There was a major highway on the other side of the river and ambulances would pass by with sirens going. Otherwise a nice campground.

    Nice Stopover Spot

We stayed with our class A RV on our way to and from a further destination. First spot was one right along the river. All the spots are spacious...neighbors are not on top of you. This spot had a nice concrete pad with a picnic table (not so nice with peeling paint). Views of the river and city were nice. Full hook-ups with sewer, water, electric, cable, and wi-if. Second spot was not on the river but equally spacious. No concrete pad with this one. Bathhouses were a mixed bag. One was large with numerous stalls and showers and very clean. The other quite small (2 stalls and one shower) and not so clean. Had to step around empty shampoo and conditioner bottles on floor and a used razor on the soap dish.....there in the early evening and still there around 9 the next morning. Many of the sites seemed to be extended stay and not all trailers were well kept.....plastic covering windows, haphazard decks, etc. All-in-all though an Ok stopover in a longer trip.

    Arrowhead Park Campground

Great nature, fishing, and camping park.

Arrowhead campground has 60 RV sites that support both 30 and 50 amp hookups. They have several well water stations to take on water and a sewer dump station. There also lots of tent camping sites. All sites come with picnic table and fire ring. There are numerous nature trails to hike ranging from easy to hard. There is also a nice sized lake for fishing, canoeing, and paddle boats. The lake has a boat ram for small fishing boats. Very well maintained, managed, and friendly atmosphere.

    Easy Family Camping Near Omaha

Our family and another family shared a primitive tent site near the back of the park. We were first and foremost impressed with the freedom we had in choosing our site. Tent camping here is non-reservable, but once you enter the park, you may choose from any spots containing a fire pit outside of RV loops. Tent sites range from lake-front, to playground side, to more private sites on the outer rim of the park. We chose a large, private site at the back of the park. This site was well maintained and had enough space to easily accommodate two families of four. We even had a picnic shelter all to ourselves. Our site was lined by woods and farmland and had a good view of a small pond. The night was full of exciting animal noises from both the nearby farm and pond. Vault toilets were a short walk away with clean shower facilities just a few loops away. The kids enjoyed riding bikes up and down gravel roads, looking for frogs, and playing on the playground. Canoe and paddle boat rental is extremely reasonable. Hiking trails near the park entrance are rugged. The staff was incredibly kind and easy-going, yet attentive. Just a short drive from neighboring towns, this is a good starter campground for families with younger kids. We hope to return in winter to check out the camping cabins.

    Scenic Park

    Nice quiet park

Host was very friendly and helpful. They had some spots on the river. We stayed in a pull through that was very spacious with picnic table and fire pit. Spectated by trees so your not on top of your neighbor. Bathrooms and showers were very clean! Although no hand soap so bring your own. Showers were free and they had bikes you could check out to ride around. Park is super close to huge park with Tennis courts and other activities.

    Nice Stopover Spot

We stayed with our class A RV on our way to and from a further destination in early July. First spot was one right along the river. All the spots are spacious...neighbors are not on top of you. This spot had a nice concrete slab with a picnic table (not so nice with peeling paint). Views of the river and city were nice. Full hook-ups with sewer, water, electric and (spotty) WiFi. Second spot was not on the river but equally spacious. No concrete patio with this one. Bathhouse’s were a mixed bag. One was large with numerous stalls and showers and very clean. The other quite small (2 stalls and one shower) and not so clean. Had to step around empty shampoo and conditioner bottles on the floor and a used razor on the soap dish...there in the early evening and still around 9 the next morning. Many sites seemed to be extended stay and not all were well kept...plastic covering windows, haphazard decks, etc. All-in-all though an OK one night stopover spot if you’re traveling through.

Lewis and Clark State Park Campground

    Clean & kid friendly

Well kept & family friendly camping in Iowa! We were able to reserve an electric unit (#30) right off the lake and across the road from the large playground (~5 setups for different age groups). We could watch the kids play while getting food ready or preparing a line to throw in the water. Short walk to the very clean restrooms with flush toilets & showers. Will come back!

    Cottonwood Cove Park Campground

    City campground in quiet neighborhood

Concrete pads, very little leveling needed. Plenty of space in between sites. Dappled shade. Easily accessible for any size rig. We didn’t use bath/shower facility; it required a code from the city. Portapotties were available in campground. Garbage dumpster, but no recycling. Dump station available, but area may be a bit tight for larger rigs to access. Camp host on site. No laundry. Some train noise. Excellent Verizon signal. Nice park with boat ramp and scenic overlook on the Missouri River. Campground is located about 5 minutes off the interstate.

Guide to Castana

Several RV campgrounds near Castana, Iowa operate with seasonal schedules that travelers should note. Hitchcock County Nature Center runs from April through November with RV sites that include electric, water, and sewer hookups. The park sits within the unique Loess Hills formation, with hiking trails of varying difficulty levels throughout the property. On-Ur-Wa RV Park operates on a slightly shorter season from April 15 to October 15, with most visitors noting the cleanliness of facilities and the spacious pull-through sites available.

What to do

Hiking trails: Explore the extensive trail system at Hitchcock County Nature Center, which offers everything from easy boardwalks to more challenging terrain in the Loess Hills. "The trails are well marked and easy to follow. I was very impressed on the hike in campsites," notes one visitor, who particularly recommends the southeast campsites for their views over the Missouri River valley and Omaha skyline.

Archery practice: Hitchcock Nature Center maintains an archery range that provides a good alternative activity when not hiking. "As a family we go to Hitchcock a few times a year for the hiking and the archery range they have on-site. Both are excellent and a nice escape from the city," reports one regular visitor.

Educational programs: Check the events calendar at Hitchcock Nature Center for specialized educational offerings throughout the camping season. "When I think of 'nature center' I think of a stuffy little cabin with taxidermy. This site is far far more than that, with hiking trails, educational programs, a museum, event halls, and of course camping," explains a camper who discovered the programming through Pheasants Forever.

What campers like

Clean facilities: On-Ur-Wa RV Park receives consistent praise for its well-maintained facilities. "This small campground is right off the interstate, easy to get to. It's right by a small truck stop, but the noise was not bothersome at all. There is a small dog park for the pups. Bathrooms and showers are clean," reports one visitor who noted the wheelchair accessibility of restrooms.

Simple check-in process: Self-service options make arrival smooth at some locations. "Stopped late after a long 12 hour drive. I loved the simple self service process. We picked an open spot, paid, and parked. The facilities were impressively clean and well maintained," explains a visitor to Hitchcock Nature Center.

Convenience for overnight stays: The proximity of Bob Hardy RV Park to highways makes it practical for travelers passing through. "Decent park and great price! We stayed 2 nights for my husband to do a job down the road. Shower house could have been cleaner but you can't beat the price at $17.50/night!" according to one reviewer who appreciated the free dump station and water fill.

What you should know

Limited hook-up options: Check specific campground amenities before arrival. Bob Hardy RV Park offers basic services: "Small park in a cute neighborhood. 8 RV spots with electric and water. Tent camping as well. $15/night for RV spot. $10/night tent spots. 5 day max. Pay at the bath house, no host on site."

Site leveling requirements: Some campgrounds require minor adjustments for comfortable parking. At Sunset at Blue Oasis RV Park, "The gravel site we were on fit our 40 ft fifth wheel without a problem but was slightly off level," notes a visitor who otherwise enjoyed the facilities.

Pet restrictions: While most rv sites near Castana, Iowa allow pets, Winnavegas Casino RV Park prohibits them entirely. One reviewer cautions this isn't a traditional campground: "Don't let the name mislead you!! I don't think you could consider this a campground at all... it's basically literally a parking lot at the far end of the property for RV hookups outside of the casino."

Tips for camping with families

Educational opportunities: Hitchcock County Nature Center offers specific programs for children. "This is one of our favorite places to camp. It's beautiful and there's plenty of hiking. The campgrounds are a little way away from the road and more secluded so they're very quiet. With the nature Center there is plenty for the kids to do. There's even a 1 mile hike on a boardwalk that's very easy."

Playground access: Some campgrounds include facilities specifically for children. Bob Hardy RV Park provides "electric hookups, grills and picnic tables at every site plus a small playground for kids," according to a family who stayed there.

Small-town amenities: In more remote locations like Odebolt, camping facilities may be basic but offer access to small town conveniences. "Cute tiny town with a cute little spot to park the camper. Located near the crick and manicured walking path. It didn't offer much but it's a nice spot to park for a night or two. Town has a little drive-in and a couple gas stations."

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: When staying at On-Ur-Wa RV Park, experienced campers recommend specific locations. "Night 1 of a 42 moves trip. You can find a few decent youtube videos that show the park and it was like living a dream. Pulled in, John came into the office, asked if I was a Good Sam member and charged me $43.34 for a full hook-up, extra long pull thru on the outside of the trees. I watch for that now after the top of a tree fell on power lines above my camper last year."

Seasonal attractions: Some campgrounds offer additional amenities during peak season. At Sunset at Blue Oasis RV Park, "Pool and family area won't open until May, but look inviting to guests. We were able to look in one of the 3 silos for rent. One word to describe: WOW!"

Maximum stay limitations: Rv accommodations near Castana, Iowa often have length-of-stay restrictions. Bob Hardy RV Park enforces a 5-day maximum stay policy, which makes it better suited for travelers passing through rather than extended stays.
