    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Can be crowded, but a good park overall

We were a bit surprised that despite having a paid reservation , we still had to pay a $20 Day usage fee to enter the park, but no matter. This is a sprawling and sometimes confusing campground to find your way in. But the sites are generally shady if a bit close together. There are five facilities with showers and running water and six pit toilets. drinking water is accessible throughout the park.
The majority of sites have six person tables, though some, especially in the new 385-416 loop have little four person tables. These are also the least shaded.
Campground and facilities are clean and well maintained.
The General Store is one of the most impressively well stocked I have ever seen. Equipment, toys, tools, food souvenirs, you name it. Good dry firewood is $6.50 a bundle in the store, $7 on the honor system after hours. It burns fast, so you might want to buy more than you think. The store is open until 9:00 Friday & Saturday, but only 2;PM on Sunday and never on Monday. Keep that in mind if you're doing a 3-day weekend as we did. When checking out, look up to see the beautiful wooden canoe with wildlife inlaid wood.
Fire pits are mostly round iron with non-adjustable swing-away grills. Booking is through Indiana DNR/ Reserve America so you can see photos of the site you pick.
This was our second experience with an Indiana state park, and like our first (Pokagon, in the winter) we were impressed with the clear marking of the hiking trails (and canoe trail for that matter) there was a map and guidepost at every junction.
There's a beach, concession stand and boat rentals on Sand lake, the Park's largest. Lastly, there's a fish cleaning shed with running water outside the campground entrance that anyone in the park can use, something I wish more parks would provide.

    Twin Mills Camping Resort

    Beautiful Wooded Campground

Twin Mills is a really beautiful and quiet RV Campground, with tall trees in Northern Indiana. We frequent this location when getting RV Repairs and visiting Elkhart, the birth place of most RVs.

There are cabins and tent sites and a large lake access point with a beach area. The playgrounds seemed to be in good shape and the dumpsters were centrally located.

The park has a gate entrance for security.

There is a large pool area and basketball court.

There are several sections in the park, some more wooded and narrow sites, some are more spread out.

Cellular: T-Mobile had good signal strength and bandwidth, AT&T was not as good but still doable.

Most of the sites are full hook up, some have 30amp and some have 50amp.

Amenities: Pool Clubhouse Basketball Volleyball Picnic tables Fire rings Trash Playground Lake access Beach area Dock Cabins Tent sites

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Great for families and group camping

If you're traveling with kids or enjoy the community of being near your fellow campers this is a great option. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat this may be a bit loud and busy. However, the many amenities are a great way to find peace with the 9 lakes, 12 trails and a beach for swimming. The lakes and connecting channels are stunning for canoes and kayaks and there is a convenient rental area. This is a campground of convenience with a very well stocked campground store with reasonable prices right next to the entrance. There is firewood and ice for sale as well as staple cooking items and cute souvenirs. The campsites are spacious and have a picnic table and fire pit at each. This campground is a great way to stay close to the fun and other campers. With so many options there is a something for everyone! Safe travels happy campers 😄

    KOA Campground Middlebury

    Decent for a quick stop

Got us in last minute when our other plans fell through. Site was only $35 for a back in water/electric. Grateful for it but wouldn’t have booked this otherwise. Site was unlevel and ran into a hill on the back end. Not much space on ether side of us. Corner lot and the rec center and basketball court was directly behind. Kids cutting through the campsite all the time.

We called several times before anyone answered and the store was clearly understaffed. Although the staff was kind and doing their best. Picnic table is on its last legs and fire ring looked like it was run over. Overall it was a little shabby but definitely not bad. Good for a place to sleep but I wouldn’t book a week here. Not many restaurant options either and also no signs for this one on the highway.

    Elkhart RV Resort by Rjourney

    Very pleasant

Hope, the owner, is always so friendly & helpful. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean. You can get an entire 4 wheeler dump load of wood for $20. It’s nice dry wood. When we’ve camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months. There’s a nice little camp store. We were given a nice welcome packet at check-in with visitor guides for the area. They recycle also. Pool and small miniature golf course. We really enjoy camping here. We’ve camped on several different sites here. We’ve stayed on the deluxe patio sites a couple of times when they were available. They have patio table & chairs on extra wide concrete pad, gas grill, fire pit & seating area in back.

    Pokagon State Park Campground

    Extensive Campground

This is an extremely large campground. About seventy-five percent of the sites are electric. We stayed in Site 255, which was not electric (booked last minute). This site was fairly level but very close to other sites…wouldn’t recommend it. However, Site 269 (next to Site 277) afforded great privacy and was large; among the non-electric sites this was the best I saw. I did not survey the electric sites, but I’m sure the site matters a lot. Non-electric sites are $20.00, plus a $9.00 park entrance fee.

There are numerous walking trails, along with horse and bike trails. Additionally, there are boat rentals, horseback rides, pony rentals, swimming, nature center, and a restaurant at the inn.

This is a family oriented park. Extended family groupings are very common. Nevertheless, people and their children are well behaved.

I would recommend this campground for two days or more. A one day stay will mean you probably won’t see much of this wonderful park. The only reason I gave it a four was that even in mid-September it was packed.

Guide to Wolcottville

Cabin camping near Wolcottville, Indiana offers lakeside accommodation options within the region's humid continental climate zone. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-85°F with moderate humidity, making late spring through early fall the peak cabin rental period. Winter cabin options remain available at select locations with temperatures often dropping below freezing between December and February.

What to do

Kayaking on connecting lakes: Chain O'Lakes State Park Campground provides access to nine interconnected lakes ideal for paddling. "There is so much to do. Between the hiking trails, boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and biking. You won't ever get bored," notes a visitor who found the facility "clean and very safe."

Fishing from dedicated access points: Crooked Creek Campground and Cabins offers river access for anglers. A visitor shares, "Clean restrooms, easy lake access, friendly vibes. Very quiet and laid back." The campground provides direct water access for fishing without needing to travel elsewhere.

Winter toboggan runs: Pokagon State Park Campground features a refrigerated toboggan run operational during winter months. "There's 500+ sites, but all nicely separated and shaded. There's an inn, restaurant, cabins, boat rentals, horseback riding, bike trails, beach, toboggan run, etc," reports one camper who found it ideal for group gatherings.

What campers like

Private waterside cabin locations: At Crooked Creek, campers appreciate the combination of cabin amenities with water access. "We reserved a spot roughly a month in advance and really enjoyed our spot. Had partial shade and picnic table at our site," notes a recent visitor who valued the balanced setting.

Extensive trail systems: Many cabin guests enjoy the hiking opportunities at Chain O'Lakes State Park. "The facility is clean and very safe," reports one camper who particularly enjoyed the multiple trail options. The park maintains several miles of trails connecting the various lakes.

Family-friendly amenities: Twin Mills Camping Resort receives positive feedback for its recreational facilities. "Really fun for families, nice pool and bathrooms, putt putt, bring your bikes," advises a camper. The resort offers structured activities during summer weekends and holidays.

What you should know

Bathroom facilities vary significantly: At some locations, shared facilities may lack privacy. "We were in the tent portion and it was very loud, the pit toilets did not have doors, and there were some mosquitoes," reports one Chain O'Lakes camper. Higher-end cabin options typically include private facilities.

Reservation requirements: Bixler Lake Park & Campground maintains strict reservation policies. "For a city campground it's very nice and friendly atmosphere and very quiet place to relax and enjoy a long weekend," notes a visitor. Most cabin locations require advance booking, with deposits ranging from $50-100.

Seasonal operation schedules: Many cabins near Wolcottville operate seasonally. Bixler Lake operates "from last weekend April to October 15," while others like Twin Mills run "Apr 15 - Nov 1." Winter cabin options remain more limited, primarily available at state parks.

Tips for camping with families

Beach access considerations: Atwood Lake Campground provides cabin options with lake swimming access. "Friendly people and good fishing," notes a visitor, highlighting multiple recreation options. The beach areas lack lifeguards, requiring parental supervision.

Structured activity options: Pokagon State Park Campground offers naturalist programs for children. A visitor mentioned, "We stopped here for a night on our cross-country trip, wish we had 2 nights because we had lots of thunderstorms. Tons of things to do (playgrounds, lake, beach, hiking, horseback and pony rides etc)."

Noise level differences: Sites near recreation areas tend to be noisier. "The beach is often overcrowded with local partiers, drinking and smoking, and leaving trash everywhere. After peak hours these people clear out and usually aren't actually camping there," observed one Chain O'Lakes visitor who recommended evening swims for a quieter experience.

Tips from RVers

Site selection criteria: At Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday, experienced RVers recommend specific cabin types. "This place was fantastic. The site was perfect with everything we would need already there. There are lakes all around and a playground for the kids," shares a visitor who especially valued the furnished cabin option.

Off-season considerations: Seasonal pricing and availability fluctuate significantly. "We spent this past week at Hogback Lake KOA. It is late in the season so much of the park was closed for the season, but we had a great year round site," reported one visitor who found the off-season stay quieter but with fewer amenities available.
