Best Campgrounds near Star City, IN

The rural landscape surrounding Star City, Indiana features several established campgrounds along the Tippecanoe River corridor, creating a hub for water-based recreation and camping. Tippecanoe River State Park Campground, located about 10 miles northwest in Winamac, offers year-round camping with 112 electric sites and a separate primitive tent area near the river. France Park in Logansport, approximately 15 miles south, provides a unique camping experience with sites near a former limestone quarry featuring unexpected waterfall views. The region also includes several lakeside options near Lake Shafer and Lake Freeman in Monticello, including Indiana Beach Campground and Norway Campground, which cater to families visiting the adjacent amusement park.

Most campgrounds in the area require advance reservations, particularly during the peak season from May through September. Road access varies significantly between locations, with some campgrounds situated on main highways while others require navigation through rural roads. As one visitor to Indiana Beach Campground noted, "No major highways nearby, so the drive was kind of strange. At one point we were on a gravel road." Mosquitoes can be problematic during summer months, especially near the Tippecanoe River. According to a camper at Tippecanoe River State Park, "The mosquitos get bad in the summer, so come prepared. Spring and late fall would be a good time to visit." Most campgrounds offer water and electric hookups, though water access points may be shared between multiple sites.

Water recreation forms the centerpiece of camping experiences in the area, with fishing, boating, and swimming available at most locations. France Park receives particularly high ratings for its unique quarry swimming area, with one visitor commenting, "The quarry was beyond stunning and never what I expected to see in an Indiana park." Family amenities are common throughout the region's campgrounds, with playgrounds, hiking trails, and camp stores available at most established sites. Privacy between campsites varies considerably, with state park campgrounds generally offering more space between sites than private campgrounds. Noise levels can be an issue at some locations, particularly at Indiana Beach Campground during peak season, where visitors report that "quiet hours are not enforced and it can get very loud in the tent area."

    Oak Lake RV Resort

We came for a weekend… Stayed nearly 2 weeks! Oak Lake RV Resort is where family memories are made.

6 people, 1 pup & a 44.4' Keystone Sprinter... Oak Lake RV Resort handled it all with ease & gave us the BEST camping trip ever! From the moment you drive up, staff are waiting in golf carts to guide you to your site & even help with setup. We were nervous about fitting our big rig, but pull-through site #17 made it flawless. Where else does that??

We originally booked August 22–25, extended to the 29th & then lucked into staying through Labor Day weekend. We canceled our other plans because Oak Lake had everything we wanted & more!!Pond swimming & obstacle course, movies on our inflatable screen, golf cart glow parades, s’mores, homemade campfire pizzas & endless family memories. The kids are still raving about it!

Rebecca deserves a huge shoutout for going above & beyond! Tom & Marianne, the owners, are amazing hosts who clearly pour their hearts into making Oak Lake special. Even the coin operated laundry was a lifesaver & convinced us we need a washer/dryer in our camper for future impromptu stays 😂.

We’re already talking about being put on the list for a seasonal site for next year bc we know we’ll be back again & again. Oak Lake RV Resort is Newton County’s hidden gem!!! If you’re searching for fun, hospitality & true family camping memories... THIS is the place!! Hands down, every time.

    Prophetstown State Park Campground

    Great campground

Great campground. Really nice campground - clean, sites with some shade (especially the section with full hookups). Lots of families enjoying camping, kids relishing the freedom of riding bikes and skateboards (unfortunately too few with helmets including one with a major black eye). Nice walking trails right off of campground. Aquatic center in park. We would return - except that crossing the country on highway 70 is brutal

    Newton County Fairgrounds

    2025 Fair Week (1st time)

We stayed at the Newton County Fairgrounds during fair week & had a great experience. The grounds were clean & well kept. It was easy to get around even with all the fair activity going on. Our campsite had water & electric only, just like all of the others. The bathrooms & showers were in good condition considering how busy the week was.

The fair itself was a lot of fun! From the 4-H shows to the carnival rides & food vendors, there was always something going on. The kids loved it! It felt very family-friendly & welcoming.

The only thing to note is that cell service & wifi can be a little spotty, but honestly that gave us more time to just enjoy the fair & each other. Overall, we would definitely come back & recommend it to anyone looking for a good small-town fair experience with a convenient place to stay.

    Cannot wait until next year!!

    Michigan City Campground

    66$ for a good overnight!

Staying here started off as a last minute thing as we’re driving through and made no arrangements for overnight lodging. With our rooftop tent, staying here was no problem! There was water hookups and electricity if desired, although we didn’t use them.

The shower/Bathroom situation is actually fairly nice for a campground! The water pressure was great, and the hot water was amazing.

I do recommend this place, however, few things to know: the campground space is tight. You will be pretty close to people around you, many with kids. It seems kind of like a family retreat type of location and honestly? It’s a whole vibe and if that’s for you, then this place is too!

Don’t think I’ve ever stayed anywhere so peaceful. Birds chirping, right on a nature spring, everyone is respectful but laid back,. Full hook ups and amazing stay.

    Mississinewa Lake Campground

    Great for families

This is a popular spot for locals and I was lucky to get the last electric site with less than a days notice. Every other site seemed to have a large gathering of family or friends. The restrooms/ showers are quite dated and sparse. I only have one bar with Verizon.

    Wabash City RV Park

A quick stop with utilities for cheap

I give this three stars not because there's nothing really wrong about it. It's just a grassy parking lot with utilities and a corner grassy knoll with shade. $16/night with electric and water it's worth at least three stars.

You may want to use GPS coordinates to the entrance.

THE QUIRKS You MUST check in at the Water Treatment Plant by 4PM. You do not need to have picked a site, yet. Complete the typical paperwork and you'll be given keys to unlock the electrical box and a key to turn on the water. They keys work at any site.

(See the pic showing the location of the RV park (red) and the Water Treatment Plant (blue).

When you check out, leave the keys in the box at the exit.

Our electrical pedestal had no 30amp receptacle. If you have a 30amp plug, bring a 50amp adapter. There are two 20amp outlets available.

The pedestals are between sites, which aren't really close. You will need a long (30-40'?) extension cord suited to your amperage to reach the pedestal. The water is clear and tastes great.

Trash and tank dump are available at the Water Treatment Plant. Be aware their hours are 7AM- 4PM Monday-Friday and 7AM- 3PM Saturday.

Basic toilets are located just outside the "park" at the dead end of S. Carol. That's also where the walking path along the river is.
