Greene-Sullivan State Forest offers several RV camping areas within 15 miles of Linton, with Narrow Lake Campground providing electric hookups, water access, and sewer connections. Sites can accommodate large rigs at the Narrow Lake area, though some gravel access roads may be rough for bigger motorhomes. "Our hotspot had great connection which allowed me to work during the day," noted one RVer, though they mentioned highway noise was an issue at sites P1-P3. Hillbilly Acres Campground in Linton features 25 RV sites with full hookups, including 50-amp electrical service and sewer connections on spacious lots. Shakamak State Park Campground, located in Jasonville, maintains year-round availability with well-maintained electric sites and both 30-amp and 50-amp options.

From October through April, RV traffic decreases significantly in the region, making last-minute reservations more feasible. Most campgrounds within 30 miles of Linton provide sanitary dump stations, with Narrow Lake offering a year-round dump facility. Cell service varies considerably throughout the area, with stronger connections reported at Hillbilly Acres and more limited coverage in state forest locations. Pets are generally welcome at all area RV parks, though restrictions may apply in certain recreation areas. Propane fill service isn't widely available at campgrounds near Linton; RVers should plan to refill in larger towns like Terre Haute or Bloomington. Winter campers should note that some water hookups may be winterized during freezing temperatures, even at year-round facilities.

      Terre Haute Campground

Great location to I-70 and Terre Haute

This campground is great proximity to I-70 for an easy on/off the interstate and just outside of downtown Terre Haute (approximately eight miles). The park is nice and shady with large trees. When we were there in November, there were very few other campers and most appeared to be transients there for just one night. With all the amenities in this place there is probably a lot going on in the summer. Downtown Terre Haute has plenty of activities including live music, sporting events, museums, restaurants, and historic sites.

RV sites are pull thrus and back-ins that vary from 50 amp full hook-up with deluxe patio to 30 amp water/electric. All sites were level. There are definitely sites big enough for big-rigs with tow vehicles so you don’t have to unhook if you are just stopping for a night. Water, sewer and electric hook-ups were well-placed and easy to reach. In addition to the RV sites, there are kamping cabins with deluxe accommodations (including air conditioning, kitchens, and bathrooms) capable of sleeping up to 6 people to rustic cabins without bathrooms. Tent sites are available as is a “teepee.”

Amenities at the park include: swimming pool, camp store (with fire wood), full service restaurant (May – November), propane fill, bike rental, basketball courts, playground, horseshoes, petting zoo, and coin laundry. The restroom and shower house was clean. There is a dump station located at the exit of the park. Our Verizon 4G phone and hotpsot had great service. Our antenna picked up about two dozen television channels

If you have a dog, there is an off-leash dog park and you are free to walk dogs around the property and there is a long road leading into park. The only problem we had with the park was that some of the trees were not trimmed and the roads where narrow and would rub against our RV.

      Shakamak State Park Campground

      “Fantastic Indiana camping experience.”

This is just a beautiful Indiana State Park located near the small community of Jasonville, Indiana which offers simple dining, grocery store, hardware store and fuel. The park has numerous recreational activities to include 3 lakes spanning some 400 acres that are known for spectacular fishing, seasonal family aquatic center for swimming with a large water slide, seasonal nature center, and several hiking trails. The campsites are in a heavily wooded area with fantastic tree canopy for shade and comfort. Sites are mostly level gravel pads ranging from primitive to 30 amp electric, 50 amp electric or a limited number of full hookup; water, sewer and 50 amp service sites plus plenty of clean bath houses. Large rig friendly. The park also has family cabins available. A small camp store supplies firewood, ice, bait and sundries...Indiana fishing license at the park office. Want to relax...enjoy beautiful sunsets on the lake, paddling a canoe or kayak, or casting a line for dinner...this is a perfect place to make that happen.

      Paynetown Campground

      Paynetown State Recreation Area

Paynetown SRA is right on Lake Monroe about 10 minutes from Bloomington, IN. Campsites have a gravel parking pad, picnic table, fire-ring, and electrical hookups. Restrooms & showers were about average... not great/not bad. A private company rents kayaks, jet skis, boats, and paddleboards from the camp-store in the SRA. There are beaches, a nature center, & playgrounds, so it seems very family friendly. There's a cool little pizza place right down the road too. This is the perfect place to camp for a weekend of fun on Lake Monroe. It's also only about 20 minutes from Lake Lemon.

Cecil M Harden Lake Raccoon State Recreation Area

      Plenty of fun!

Raccoon State Recreation Area | Cecil M Harden Lake is located in the heart of historic covered bridge country just 50 miles West of Indianapolis. The campground is surrounded by the 2,060 acre Cecil M Harden reservoir offering boating (boat rental), fishing and a large swimming beach with concessions and amenities. The campground is extremely well maintained with many sites sheltered by tree canopy ranging from non-electric, 30 amp, to 50 amp. Fresh water is available at fill stations and a spacious dump station area make for easy disposal. Many of the sites are not level so chose wisely to suit your needs. Easy beach access from the campground via a paved walk/bike path, well stocked camp store at the entrance to the campground, well maintained bath house facilities, active interpretive Naturalist programs, and numerous hiking trail opportunities round out the amenities. This is a beautiful campground; and if you like to explore...take a drive through the area and enjoy the many historic towns, covered bridges and roller mills throughout the county.

      Shakamak State Park Campground

      Very nice campground!

This was a camping weekend. We've camped here before, but many years ago. It was time to go back.

So, we couldn't remember much about this state park. We were never compelled to go back sooner. Now I remember why. This is a nice park. Not outstanding. Not special. It's just...nice.

There's 7 hiking trails. All are nice walks in the woods. All were muddy in sections. There's an old coal mine on Trail 2. Blocked off for safety.

There's no beach, but they have an enormous pool. It has slides & everything.

This is a fishing park. Boating with electric motors, so a quiet lake. Fishing was fair according to my fishing guy.

The Nature Center was inexplicably closed "for the season". Disappointing!

There's many boat launches & picnic areas. Cabins for rent. Boats for rent.

We stayed at the electric campground. The sites are great- wooded. This is a well established campground.

The sites are all flat- ALL FLAT!!! No inclined sites at all! Unheard of in an Indiana State Park, but there you go.

      There's some train noise.

The bathrooms/showers are KOA clean. Also unheard of in an Indiana State Park. I couldn't even find a spider web. Kudos to the park employees& camp hosts!

We had a site by the lake, but there was no lake view & there was a steep incline to get down to the water.

This campground has a beautiful fishing pier just for campers.

Bring an extension cord if you're in a pull through. If you want your door facing the fire pit- the electric box is in an awkward place.

There's also another campground that has a mix of electric/full hookup & non electric sites. They have a beautiful bathhouse.

All in all a pleasant weekend. We camped at Shakamak State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Lake Views - Good for Covid

With COVID, it seems that everyone...and then more people are going camping. It's a bittersweet type of situation. Nevertheless, it's been very hard to find decent camping in Indiana that isn't packed in like sardines, while also trying to escape the city and get into nature - not around more people.

Luckily, a friend and I came here last October and this place was great. We got a non electric site and were in the middle of the sites. We had a great lake view and were very happy with our setup. It was a pull-through site, although not all are like that. We were able to set up in no time.

We had lots of space, away from our neighbors. The campstore had wood and random items that you might need should you forget. We were just steps away from the lake and enjoyed walking down there every morning. There aren't the best hiking trails around, so you'll need to drive to the nearby Brown County or National Forest to hike on trails that are actually worth the time.

I will add that the setup is a bit odd for non-electric. You basically had to pull up to the gatehouse, get your reservation info, then do a U-turn and go back out past the campstore in order to get to your campground. Very odd setup to say the least.

      Mccormick's Creek State Park Campground

      Indiana's First State Park

This park is a southern Indiana beauty. Indiana's first state park dating to 1916. The heart of the park is McCormick's Creek Canyon with stunning views, hiking and some of the best wildflower displays in the state...and let's don't forget McCormick's Creek waterfall...yes its probably only 10' but this is a big deal for Indiana. The park offers numerous hikes varying in difficulty accessing features and attractions to include a 90' fire tower, scenic canyon and waterfall, small cave(Wolf Cave), interesting sinkholes and some stunning second growth hardwood forest. A center piece of the park is the Canyon Inn offering hotel accommodations, dining, seasonal swimming pool(guests only) and in the winter months a massive warming fireplace. The campground provides 189 electric only sites(30 amp) typically gravel pads and 32 primitive sites; most having nice tree canopy for summer shade. Larger coaches have limited choices. The park has an exceptional seasonal outdoor pool, seasonal camp store, very active nature center and naturalist program. Just minutes from the park is the town of Spencer with everything you need to re-supply or grab a dinner out...restaurants, grocery, Wal-Mart, fuel and more

    Guide to Linton

The Greene-Sullivan State Forest area near Linton offers over 9,000 acres of reclaimed land featuring approximately 120 fishing lakes. Winter temperatures in this region typically range from 20-40°F, while summer months see averages of 80-85°F. Many campgrounds remain open year-round but with reduced traffic from October through April.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: Greene Sullivan State Forest provides some of the best fishing in Indiana with lakes rich in bass, bluegill, crappie, and redear. Narrow Lake Campground offers excellent bank fishing access, though one visitor noted "fishing areas are plentiful here. We rented a primitive cabin and it had the bare minimum."

Mountain biking: Located just minutes from Fowler County Park, Griffin Bike Park offers exceptional trails. A camper mentioned, "This park is located about 1/4 mile from the entrance to Griffin Bike park, and the mountain biking there is fantastic." The park also provides a scenic lake loop with smooth tarmac that's "pretty smooth for a longboard glide almost all the way around the lake."

Pioneer village exploration: Fowler County Park features a historical attraction worth visiting. As one reviewer described, "There is also a really nice loop around the lake with a swimming spot and some old cabins for some westworld feels." The park hosts special events throughout the year including vintage camping demonstrations.

    What campers like

Privacy and space: At Taylor Ridge Campground, campers appreciate the natural setting. One reviewer shared, "The site we stayed in was lovely. It was backed up to the edge of the woods which made for a lovely view." They also advised, "Pay particular attention to the size of the site you're booking as some were pretty small."

Clean facilities: Cleanliness stands out at several campgrounds. A visitor to West Boggs Park commented, "Boggs is great for Families. They have great activities such as outdoor movies, scavenger hunts, and more. They are golf cart friendly with many well-maintained trails." The park's themed weekends receive positive mentions from multiple reviewers.

Lakefront camping: Water access is a major draw for campers in the Linton area. One reviewer said of West Boggs Park, "We love this campground. Its close to home, on a lake & has all the amenities. We prefer a small section of the park called Milligan's Point. There are only 10 spots, you're right on the water, and has full hook ups."

    What you should know

Site selection considerations: Many campgrounds have varied site qualities. At Taylor Ridge, "Driving through the campground it looks like there are some sites pretty close together but ours wasn't too bad. Also, some sites were fairly sloped as well."

Seasonal concerns: Weather impacts both access and facilities in the region. At Shakamak State Park Campground, a visitor noted, "Most of the spaces that had both water and electric were mostly in the sun. But all the other spaces had plenty of shade and trees around them." Summer visitors should prepare for insects as one camper warned: "Very nice camping spot, but in August beware of the bugs!"

Cell service variability: Connectivity differs significantly between campgrounds. A Shakamak visitor reported, "One downside was we had Verizon as a cell phone carrier and only had one bar." Meanwhile, small private campgrounds like Happy Campers Campground offer "Verizon LTE, AT&T LTE, T-Mobile LTE, Sprint LTE" according to listings.

    Tips for camping with families

Pool alternatives: When looking for family-friendly rv sites near Linton, Indiana, consider Shakamak State Park's aquatic amenities. A camper described, "There's no beach, but they have an enormous pool. It has slides & everything." Another added, "The pool also had a splash area/wading pool for your smaller kiddos."

Playground accessibility: Happy Campers Campground provides open space for children. A visitor noted, "Plenty of room for kids or pets to roam and play. Very clean and safe." The campground's layout allows for easy supervision.

Organized activities: Family programming varies by season. West Boggs Park excels in this area as one camper explained, "Their holiday/theme weekends are fun for all ages. They have normal lake life, beach, and fishing." Another recommended, "West Boggs lake is near the heart of Indiana's Amish country" for cultural exploration opportunities.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling: RV camping near Linton, Indiana often requires preparation for uneven terrain. At Cloverdale RV Park, one RVer noted, "This easy-access-from-the-highway RV park is really nice. The spots are accessible, the bathrooms are AMAZING (no…seriously)." However, at West Boggs, another mentioned, "I haven't seen any of the pads that are terribly unlevel."

Big rig access: For larger motorhomes, site selection requires careful research. As one RVer at West Boggs advised, "If you are wanting sewer, this park is very limited for 45' Motorhomes. The available sites with sewer are all back in that are not very level and many are tight for Big Rigs including large trailers."

Working remotely: Some campgrounds support digital nomads better than others. At New Vision RV Park, a reviewer commented, "Clean easy to find it is right on hwy a little noisy but quaint." The park's highway proximity provides better connectivity but introduces traffic noise.
