    Thousand Trails Bear Cave

    Great Campground

This is a nice, family friendly campground. Lots of very friendly other campers, a heated pool, playground for the kids, nice size lots with fire pits, picnic tables, electric& water (including at tent sites). Pool has an ADA lift chair. 2 shower/bath houses, camp store, a real bear cave you can tour in (free), a creek that meanders through it. The resort sits on the St. Joseph river & this park has a boat ramp & dock for fishing. There is a gate that campers need a code to get into so it keeps out unwanted’s. Nice staff. Yolanda is a great manager. Security, a ‘honey wagon’. Laundry center. Quiet hours are 10p-8a. It’s near Buchanan Michigan and the RED BUD Motor Cross track. Very friendly people, always stopping and talking.

    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Can be crowded, but a good park overall

We were a bit surprised that despite having a paid reservation , we still had to pay a $20 Day usage fee to enter the park, but no matter. This is a sprawling and sometimes confusing campground to find your way in. But the sites are generally shady if a bit close together. There are five facilities with showers and running water and six pit toilets. drinking water is accessible throughout the park.
The majority of sites have six person tables, though some, especially in the new 385-416 loop have little four person tables. These are also the least shaded.
Campground and facilities are clean and well maintained.
The General Store is one of the most impressively well stocked I have ever seen. Equipment, toys, tools, food souvenirs, you name it. Good dry firewood is $6.50 a bundle in the store, $7 on the honor system after hours. It burns fast, so you might want to buy more than you think. The store is open until 9:00 Friday & Saturday, but only 2;PM on Sunday and never on Monday. Keep that in mind if you're doing a 3-day weekend as we did. When checking out, look up to see the beautiful wooden canoe with wildlife inlaid wood.
Fire pits are mostly round iron with non-adjustable swing-away grills. Booking is through Indiana DNR/ Reserve America so you can see photos of the site you pick.
This was our second experience with an Indiana state park, and like our first (Pokagon, in the winter) we were impressed with the clear marking of the hiking trails (and canoe trail for that matter) there was a map and guidepost at every junction.
There's a beach, concession stand and boat rentals on Sand lake, the Park's largest. Lastly, there's a fish cleaning shed with running water outside the campground entrance that anyone in the park can use, something I wish more parks would provide.

    Twin Mills Camping Resort

    Beautiful Wooded Campground

Twin Mills is a really beautiful and quiet RV Campground, with tall trees in Northern Indiana. We frequent this location when getting RV Repairs and visiting Elkhart, the birth place of most RVs.

There are cabins and tent sites and a large lake access point with a beach area. The playgrounds seemed to be in good shape and the dumpsters were centrally located.

The park has a gate entrance for security.

There is a large pool area and basketball court.

There are several sections in the park, some more wooded and narrow sites, some are more spread out.

Cellular: T-Mobile had good signal strength and bandwidth, AT&T was not as good but still doable.

Most of the sites are full hook up, some have 30amp and some have 50amp.

Amenities: Pool Clubhouse Basketball Volleyball Picnic tables Fire rings Trash Playground Lake access Beach area Dock Cabins Tent sites

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Great for families and group camping

If you're traveling with kids or enjoy the community of being near your fellow campers this is a great option. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat this may be a bit loud and busy. However, the many amenities are a great way to find peace with the 9 lakes, 12 trails and a beach for swimming. The lakes and connecting channels are stunning for canoes and kayaks and there is a convenient rental area. This is a campground of convenience with a very well stocked campground store with reasonable prices right next to the entrance. There is firewood and ice for sale as well as staple cooking items and cute souvenirs. The campsites are spacious and have a picnic table and fire pit at each. This campground is a great way to stay close to the fun and other campers. With so many options there is a something for everyone! Safe travels happy campers 😄

    KOA Campground Middlebury

    Decent for a quick stop

Got us in last minute when our other plans fell through. Site was only $35 for a back in water/electric. Grateful for it but wouldn’t have booked this otherwise. Site was unlevel and ran into a hill on the back end. Not much space on ether side of us. Corner lot and the rec center and basketball court was directly behind. Kids cutting through the campsite all the time.

We called several times before anyone answered and the store was clearly understaffed. Although the staff was kind and doing their best. Picnic table is on its last legs and fire ring looked like it was run over. Overall it was a little shabby but definitely not bad. Good for a place to sleep but I wouldn’t book a week here. Not many restaurant options either and also no signs for this one on the highway.

    Potato Creek State Park Campground

    Great Family Camground

We have visited this campground twice now. The first time we stayed in one of the cabins. The cabins are large, bathroom was very clean, large screened in porch. Only con was that the cabins all share one large firepit. This past weekend we stayed in a camper. The sites were a nice size. Clean sites. Bathrooms were decent for a campground in my opinion. The kids had a great time riding bikes, playing on multiple playgrounds, and playing in the lake all day.

    Elkhart RV Resort by Rjourney

    Very pleasant

Hope, the owner, is always so friendly & helpful. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean. You can get an entire 4 wheeler dump load of wood for $20. It’s nice dry wood. When we’ve camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months. There’s a nice little camp store. We were given a nice welcome packet at check-in with visitor guides for the area. They recycle also. Pool and small miniature golf course. We really enjoy camping here. We’ve camped on several different sites here. We’ve stayed on the deluxe patio sites a couple of times when they were available. They have patio table & chairs on extra wide concrete pad, gas grill, fire pit & seating area in back.

Amish country exploration: Elkhart RV Resort by Rjourney provides convenient access to Amish communities. "Great campground in the heart of Amish country. Near Elkhart and the RV/MH Hall of Fame & Museum. Great place to visit, really interesting. Also, near Shipshewana," explains a camper who enjoyed the cultural experiences available.

Trail hiking: state park networks: Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground features multiple hiking trails connecting natural areas. "I have stayed at this state park many times since I was little. There is so much to do. Between the hiking trails, boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and biking. You won't ever get bored," shares a frequent visitor.

Winter activities: Unique among area facilities, Pokagon State Park Campground maintains year-round cabin availability with winter recreation. "There's 500+ sites, but all nicely separated and shaded. There's an inn, restaurant, cabins, boat rentals, horseback riding, bike trails, beach, toboggan run, etc," reports a camper who appreciated the full-season options.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Cabin properties in the Ligonier area maintain consistent cleanliness standards. "Air conditioning in the bathrooms. Very nice campground with level sites and air conditioned bathrooms! That is amazing in the summer. They have trails that are a nice walk for the dogs and a pond to catch and release fish," notes a visitor at Elkhart RV Resort.

Family-oriented activities: Ebys Pines provides structured recreation for various age groups. "Tons of stuff to do for campers of all ages. Roller skating, mini bowling, laser tag, and an arcade at the fun center. There was a corn hole tournament, a golf cart parade, a wagon ride, and a live band," reports a satisfied family camper.

Nature immersion: Many cabin properties feature proximity to natural features. "Lots to do here! Trails lead to a local County park - Bonneyville Mill. There's a roller skating rink and laser tag across the street. Bathrooms were well maintained, although the water hammer noise when you flush is a bit scary at first!" explains a visitor who enjoyed combining outdoor and entertainment options.

Security features: Several properties implement controlled access. "Twin Mills is a really beautiful and quiet RV Campground, with tall trees in Northern Indiana. The park has a gate entrance for security," notes a camper who appreciated the safety measures.

What you should know

Site variations: Twin Mills Camping Resort and similar properties feature significant differences between site types. "Huge campground, we stopped for one night a week prior to their closing for the season. Sites deep not very wide. Good for a quick stop," notes a visitor, highlighting the importance of researching specific site dimensions.

Seasonal limitations: Many cabin facilities close between late October and April. "The General Store is one of the most impressively well stocked I have ever seen. Equipment, toys, tools, food souvenirs, you name it," reports a visitor at Chain O' Lakes, though seasonal hours may apply.

Tent-specific areas: Several campgrounds maintain separate tent and RV sections. "If you like tent camping this place has a great tent/pop up only section on the river," notes a camper at Ebys Pines, indicating specialized accommodation areas.

Additional fees: Various properties charge for extras beyond standard rates. "Stayed here 3 nights in October campground has most of the attractions (pool etc) closed as expected but still charged visitors $5 per person per day. And charged $5 per device per day for WiFi," reports a Shipshewana Campground visitor.

Tips for camping with families

Off-peak timing benefits: Visiting during weekdays reduces crowds at popular areas. "Memorial Day weekend was busy with lots of events each day. But not so crowded that you couldn't enjoy some privacy and nature!" shares an Ebys Pines visitor who found balance even during a holiday period.

Activity planning: Properties offer varied scheduled events throughout summer seasons. "We stopped here for a night on our cross-country trip, wish we had 2 nights because we had lots of thunderstorms. Tons of things to do (playgrounds, lake, beach, hiking, horseback and pony rides etc)," notes a Pokagon State Park visitor.

Bathroom facility research: Atwood Lake Campground and other properties vary significantly in bathroom amenities. "It's crowded, pretty quiet usually, no showers or running water bathroom facilities. But the view..." cautions a visitor who recommends planning accordingly for bathroom needs.

Weather preparation: Summer temperatures can reach 90°F with high humidity while spring and fall nights often drop below 50°F. "We were in the tent portion and it was very loud, the pit toilets did not have doors, and there were some mosquitoes," warns a Chain O' Lakes visitor, suggesting bringing appropriate gear for variable conditions.

Tips from RVers

Access route selection: RVers should plan approach routes carefully. "Coming from the West, stay on I-80 to IN-13(exit 107) as it makes for an easier route than on the local roads versus following your GPS or Waze which may have you exit off in Elkhart," advises a Shipshewana Campground visitor.

Site positioning considerations: Campgrounds often have varying hookup locations. "The utilities were in the center, which made it nice to dump our two black tanks. Water pressure was good at about 50 psi. It was nice that the utilities were on the center of the pad," notes an RVer who appreciated the convenient layout.

Connectivity variations: Cell service and WiFi quality vary significantly between properties. "We got 4 bars on Verizon. If we wanted to put out satellite, we could have as there are not many trees in the central area to block the signal," reports a camper at Shipshewana Campground South Park.

Seasonal site awareness: Many campgrounds have predominantly seasonal residents. "This campground is almost completely filled with mini homes that occupy the grounds year round. The residents flock to open them at the beginning of summer and stay as late as November," cautions a visitor about Jellystone Park Camp Resort.
