    Thousand Trails Bear Cave

    Great Campground

This is a nice, family friendly campground. Lots of very friendly other campers, a heated pool, playground for the kids, nice size lots with fire pits, picnic tables, electric& water (including at tent sites). Pool has an ADA lift chair. 2 shower/bath houses, camp store, a real bear cave you can tour in (free), a creek that meanders through it. The resort sits on the St. Joseph river & this park has a boat ramp & dock for fishing. There is a gate that campers need a code to get into so it keeps out unwanted’s. Nice staff. Yolanda is a great manager. Security, a ‘honey wagon’. Laundry center. Quiet hours are 10p-8a. It’s near Buchanan Michigan and the RED BUD Motor Cross track. Very friendly people, always stopping and talking.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

A campground with a little bit of everything for everyone ...

PSA, this was my first time camping.  EVER.  I came here with a few family member to hike and get away from the rat race of life and that's exactly what I got. An awesome 1st time experience.  My site was NOT fully shaded and was level, a plus because I slept in my vehicle.  Our camp neighbors were friendly.  So many people, kids and well behaved dogs.  The quiet hours were quiet with exception of the couple loud drunk guys who ended up laying in the road near our sites.  I thought it was funny, but my experienced camping family members not so much.  Bathroom was clean and stocked.  Didn't use the available free showers, next time.  Water water everywhere and no mosquitos.  Trails were well kept.  They do have an enclosed fish cleaning station which looked nice.  Everything is within walking distance from your campsite.  Boat & kayak rentals are available, but closed after Labor Day.  The camp store has everything and anything you would need or need including souvenirs.  My late September weekend was cooler than normal, lows in the 40's and highs in the 60's.  The campfire smoke that hung in the air like ground fog.  Not a deal breaker.  I will be back in April 2026.  Going to give the cabins a try and do some fishing.  I will come back here !

    Air conditioning in the bathrooms

Very nice campground with level sites and air conditioned bathrooms! That is amazing in the summer. They have trails that are a nice walk for the dogs and a pond to catch and release fish.

    Shamrock Park

    Hidden Gem

The ranger was awesome. You can buy firewood and ice on site. There’s WiFi, electricity, showers and bathrooms. The campground is right on the water-perfect for kayaking or fishing. There’s also all sorts of activities for kids-ping pong, basketball, cornhole and more. It’s also a quick walk to a grocery store and restaurants. There’s no grill on the fire pit, so plan accordingly.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Can be crowded, but a good park overall

We were a bit surprised that despite having a paid reservation , we still had to pay a $20 Day usage fee to enter the park, but no matter. This is a sprawling and sometimes confusing campground to find your way in. But the sites are generally shady if a bit close together. There are five facilities with showers and running water and six pit toilets. drinking water is accessible throughout the park.
The majority of sites have six person tables, though some, especially in the new 385-416 loop have little four person tables. These are also the least shaded.
Campground and facilities are clean and well maintained.
The General Store is one of the most impressively well stocked I have ever seen. Equipment, toys, tools, food souvenirs, you name it. Good dry firewood is $6.50 a bundle in the store, $7 on the honor system after hours. It burns fast, so you might want to buy more than you think. The store is open until 9:00 Friday & Saturday, but only 2;PM on Sunday and never on Monday. Keep that in mind if you're doing a 3-day weekend as we did. When checking out, look up to see the beautiful wooden canoe with wildlife inlaid wood.
Fire pits are mostly round iron with non-adjustable swing-away grills. Booking is through Indiana DNR/ Reserve America so you can see photos of the site you pick.
This was our second experience with an Indiana state park, and like our first (Pokagon, in the winter) we were impressed with the clear marking of the hiking trails (and canoe trail for that matter) there was a map and guidepost at every junction.
There's a beach, concession stand and boat rentals on Sand lake, the Park's largest. Lastly, there's a fish cleaning shed with running water outside the campground entrance that anyone in the park can use, something I wish more parks would provide.

    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

    Very pleasant

Hope, the owner, is always so friendly & helpful. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean. You can get an entire 4 wheeler dump load of wood for $20. It’s nice dry wood. When we’ve camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months. There’s a nice little camp store. We were given a nice welcome packet at check-in with visitor guides for the area. They recycle also. Pool and small miniature golf course. We really enjoy camping here. We’ve camped on several different sites here. We’ve stayed on the deluxe patio sites a couple of times when they were available. They have patio table & chairs on extra wide concrete pad, gas grill, fire pit & seating area in back.

    Michigan City Campground

    Great campground, will return

This is a beautifully kept campground just outside Michigan City, IN. It is gated so will need to call in once you arrive to enter. We stayed  in the premium sites which were 90ft pull thought with 50A service, water and sewer, and the best wifi I have seen at a campsite. The cement patio was large with a picnic table and an adjacent fire pit. There is swimming pool and a game room, and a small store with the essentials, and propane.

You are close to Indiana Dunes and the downtown area of Michigan city. Good food, shops are close by.

By the way there are a number of cabins/mini homes to rent.

Dunewood Campground — Indiana Dunes National Park

    Easy camping

You gotta love Indiana dunes national lakeshore! A quick drive from chicago this campsite is a real good place to get away from the city and enjoy the outdoors. It’s one of my favorite places to go within an hour’s drive. The campsite has everything you need. Modern bathrooms and showers, running water. Good for tent camping. It’s clean and a quick drive to a quiet beach at Beverly Shores. I highly recommend!

What You Should Know

Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds in the region operate from April through October. "We camped the end of May & they were just getting going. Spring & late fall would be a good time to visit," advises a camper at Tippecanoe River State Park regarding mosquitoes.

Reservation requirements: Popular sites fill quickly, especially on weekends and holidays. "Seems like a very popular place, even in the off season, so you're best bet is to make a reservation or call ahead to make sure they can accommodate you," recommends a visitor.

Noise factors: Some campgrounds experience highway or railroad noise. "The proximity to the highway is deceiving. It feels like you are off the beaten path, but looking at a map, you see how close you are to the interstate. That makes for a lot of noise, all night long," reports a camper at Warren Dunes State Park Campground.

Cell service variability: Coverage varies significantly between providers. "I have AT&T service and could not use my phone at all, my husband has Verizon and had no problems with cell service," notes a Tippecanoe River visitor.

Tips for Camping with Families

Playground proximity: At Tippecanoe River State Park, certain sites offer direct playground access. "For the playground, sites 2,3,4,6,&7 have direct access to a playground & you can watch your children from your site," explains a reviewer.

Structured activities: France Park organizes regular family-oriented events. "The kids had fun at the park and fishing. Everyone was super nice and inviting. The potluck was amazing," shares a family camper.

Beach options: Both lakefront and pool swimming are available within the region. "The swimming beach at the Quarry is very nice. If You're A Primitive camper this place has some awesome camping spots for you," notes a France Park visitor.

Educational opportunities: Seasonal stargazing events are scheduled at several parks. "Did participate in a star gazing event being held that weekend and it is still something my husband and I talk about regularly," shares a Tippecanoe River camper.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Elkhart Campground offers full-hookup sites with good utility placement. "After checking in, we proceeded to pull through site 742 with FHUs. The utilities were well placed on the pad and the water pressure was good at around 50 psi," reports an RV camper.

Extension cord requirements: At Potato Creek, electrical connections may require additional equipment. "Be ready with back up cords, some sites require 75 ft to hook up," warns a frequent visitor.

Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds have uneven terrain requiring adjustments. "Site needed leveling, had no shade at all and was close to major hwy. The front and side sites seemed nicer and had ample shade with some concrete sites," notes an Elkhart Campground reviewer.

Travel distances: Campground entrance to site travel times can be significant. "Takes 10-15 mins to drive out of campground, so keep this in mind," mentions a Potato Creek visitor.
