Best Campgrounds near Clayton, ID

The Salmon River corridor near Clayton, Idaho provides a mix of developed campgrounds and dispersed camping areas within the Sawtooth National Forest and BLM lands. Established options include The Sawmill Station with cabin accommodations and RV hookups, while Holman Creek Campground and Whiskey Flats Campground offer more rustic tent and RV sites without hookups. Several dispersed camping areas can be found along the Salmon River and its tributaries, with Deadman Hole Recreation Site offering free camping with vault toilets and picnic tables for tent campers, RVs, and even cabin options.

Road conditions vary significantly throughout the region, with many campgrounds accessible via paved highways while dispersed sites often require high-clearance vehicles on rougher forest roads. Most campgrounds in the area operate seasonally, typically from late spring through early fall, though some like Bayhorse Recreation Site remain open year-round. Summer temperatures are generally pleasant, but nights can be quite cool even in July and August due to the higher elevation. Cell service is limited or nonexistent at most camping locations, requiring advance planning. A camper noted, "The road can be a bit sketchy in spots but all in all not completely difficult. I did it with my Tacoma pulling a tiny camper but when I arrived at the lake, there were much larger vehicles than mine already there."

Proximity to water represents a significant draw for many campers in the Clayton area, with several campgrounds situated along the Salmon River or near mountain lakes. Vault toilets are common at most established sites, though hookups and shower facilities are limited to a few developed campgrounds like The Sawmill Station. The surrounding mountains provide excellent hiking opportunities and scenic views, with wildlife sightings frequently mentioned in reviews. Several visitors highlighted the region's natural hot springs as a unique feature worth exploring. A review mentioned, "This area is open range, and there are cattle roaming the grassland next to the lake. Watch your step on the paths around the site." Winter camping is possible at some locations but requires proper preparation for potentially harsh conditions and limited access.

    Park Creek Campground

    AMAZING

We were actually on our way to the Wildhorse campground and passed this and decided to check it out and were not disappointed! There was only one other family there on a Sunday night, and as soon as we pulled in we were greeted by a moose and her calf. Some of the sites are close and more bare and bigger would be good for groups or families together, others are more private. I believe there was 13 sites. Stars were also INCREDIBLE!

    Sunny Gulch Campground

No hook ups, but that’s great

Nice campground with lots of trees. Good spacing between sites, and have tent pads. Picnic tables and fire rings are nicely done. Easy access to river. Most sites could handle 30 foot travel trailer. Easy access to area attractions.

    Deer Gulch

    Great spot! Easy access

Just off the main highway, and only a narrow bridge as an obstacle. There is currently a 30’ish foot big fifth wheel here, so I guess it can handle the weight. Just watch your sides if you are pulling a camper.

Plenty of room for Rv’s and tents. Lots of open space next to the river. There are some shaded spots, and plenty of unshaded in case you have Starlink. There are even some metal campfire rings.

Easy river access, too! Note that you can turn right or left once across the bridge. Fewer people to the left.

North Fork Campground - Sawtooth National Forest

Remote location just a few miles north of Ketchum

Dispersed camping along the Wood River and a couple of SNRA Campgrounds with pit toilets and water. Amazing spot within easy driving distance of Ketchum and Sun Valley. The road dead ends at the trailhead for the Hemingway Wilderness

    Centennial Rest Area Hwy 93

Parking lot on the edge of town.

This parking lot allows for overnight parking, up to 16 hours. There are toilets and some picnic tables. A few trees and a nice view of the mountains.

Could not get them to respond to me

This review does not reflect the campground but the staff. They would not respond to my phone calls nor my emails.

    Sunny Gulch Campground

    Sunny Gulch

Great space between sites. Large driveway to park the larger rigs. River in the back of the campground with a short hike to access. Nice vault toilet but no showers

    Petit Lake Dispersed Camping

Great spots, close to the Tin Cup trailhead!

Within 5 minutes from the lake and the trailhead for the Alice-Toxaway Loop. Quite a few camping spots available back this direction, I saw at least 7 spots up close to the entrance, and it did go back farther. Plenty of room for trailer rigs or just tents like me.

I came on a Sunday night, several people leaving, several spots available. Not sure if it would be the same towards the beginning of the weekend.

North Fork Big Wood River dispersed #5

Best dispersed I have been to.

Best location I have been to yet. A lot of places are very small not big enough for larger vehicles and this spot is big enough for 30 foot trailer. Very good place, lots of area for multiple tents, very pretty views.
