Best Campgrounds near Oakley, ID

Camping near Oakley, Idaho encompasses a mix of established campgrounds, dispersed sites, and reservoir-based recreation areas in southern Idaho's high desert landscape. The area is anchored by the internationally recognized City of Rocks National Reserve, located about 15 miles south of Oakley, where unique granite formations create a dramatic backdrop for camping. Nearby Castle Rocks State Park offers additional camping through its Smoky Mountain Campground. Closer to town, the Lower Goose Creek Reservoir (Oakley Reservoir) provides waterfront camping with fishing opportunities. The Oakley City RV Park serves as a convenient in-town option with hookups for those seeking more amenities, while Sawtooth National Forest lands surround the region with various primitive camping options.

Most campgrounds in the Oakley area operate seasonally, with peak availability from May through September. City of Rocks and Castle Rocks require reservations through Reserve America, with sites filling quickly during summer months. The higher elevation sites at City of Rocks (reaching over 7,000 feet) can experience temperatures 10 degrees cooler than surrounding areas. Cell service is limited throughout the region, with reception generally available only at higher elevations or in town. Dirt roads leading to many sites can become difficult after rain or snow, and some remote areas require high-clearance vehicles. Water availability is seasonal, with many facilities shutting down in winter months.

The camping experiences vary significantly across the area. City of Rocks attracts rock climbers with its world-class granite formations and uniquely dispersed campsites scattered throughout the park. According to visitors, "sites are well spaced out, intermixed with the rock formations" and offer exceptional privacy. Lake Cleveland and Independence Lakes campgrounds in the nearby mountains provide cooler summer temperatures and fishing opportunities. For RV travelers, the Oakley City RV Park offers full hookups during its operating season (May-September), while dispersed camping on BLM and Forest Service land provides free alternatives for self-sufficient campers willing to follow leave-no-trace principles.

    Wifi and solitude

I am so surprised I have service! Car camping with my dog. Right by the water. Several very cool spots to pick from. You need a 4WD. My pup Wolfie loved it too!

    Lud Drexler Park

    Nice view, horrible flies !

First two days were good, weather was hot but doable. Only available sites were not close to level and unfortunately the gravel was deep enough that I had trouble getting level blocks in place. Got it close enough to work. This was Labor Day weekend so pretty full. Day 3 saw the arrival of the flies that others have noted. Horrible. Nice tables under pavilions, fire rings and relatively clean vault toilets, dumpsters and a RV dump.

    Rock Creek RV Park

    Good value for the money

Twin Falls county park within the city. Electric & water. Dump about a mile away. Extremely well maintained. Vault toilets. Lots of paved walkways. Narrow steep, short, paved road in and out, 40 foot rigs navigated in and out

Beautiful and private but watch out for the flys

This site was a one night stop but I would’ve stayed a bit longer if I could’ve it was quiet with some good views of the Snake river and the surrounding canyon walls. The one downside is there is a large amount of flys at this site.

    Great campground, not great road

Beautiful and peaceful, right on the river's edge. Lots to explore. No amenities so be prepared for that. Great place if the road in wasn't so stetchy. Barely made it out with 2wd E250 van. 4wd would probably be fine, just be aware it's a bumpy ride either way! If you come in August, bring something for the flies (they're pretty bad). ✌️

    Murtaugh Lake Park Campground

    Peaceful, clean, grassy campsites

Birds are abundant, so is the sunshine and good vibes. A few families using the day use areas and boating out on the lake. I wanted to take my paddle board out but the lack of shower facilities had me hesitating.

    Twin Falls-Jerome KOA

Clean and excellent location for Seattle based multi day trips

We stopped here on out way home to Settle from Colorado. The staff at front desk was welcoming and nice. The place was quiet at night and super clean bathrooms, showers, and all around. We were very pleasantly surprised. Comparing this to any other KOA that we've stayed at, was one of the best.

    STUNNING

One moment you are driving through farmland. The next moment a canyon appears out of nowhere. There is a beach there are waterfalls and the views are absolutely amazing. This is a hidden jem a must see… totally dispersed camping there is nothing here, but peace and beauty. There is one site that has a picnic table. Other than that it’s just amazing. The water falls are absolutely spectacular! You can park on a beach or higher up… every site is amazing. You need to walk up the rocks and follow the path to the water falls. It is an easy walk on the path or you can climb some rocks. It is a short walk to see the most amazing lava rock formations and the canyon

    Bear Gulch

    Worth the drive

After a long drive down a washboard dirt road for about 40 minutes we finally made it to the campground. Secure what you can as your stuff will vibrate everywhere. No problem fitting our 33" motorhome and extra vehicle. The first two sites were taken but further down there are a handful of sites to choose from including some with some shade, and pit toilets. We came up here looking to escape the heat of the city and were not disappointed. It was a good 10 degrees cooler and cooled off quickly when the sun went down. A handful of flies and bees but haven't noticed mosquitoes as of yet. No cell service at all. Looks like someone has been building forts up here in a couple of the spots.
