What to do
Airboat tours: 5-10 miles from camp. At Boggy Creek Resort & RV Park, visitors have immediate access to East Lake Tohopekaliga for wildlife viewing. "If you're a fisherman, this place will be a good place to relax and talk to your neighbors. The location is great for people who are looking to be close to the airport and theme parks," notes Tina F.
Hiking trails: Various lengths and difficulty levels. Lake Kissimmee State Park Campground offers numerous trails with wildlife viewing opportunities. "Campsites are far enough apart for privacy with lots of shades trees. Each site has a firepit. Bathrooms were clean. Lots of small trails to explore and tall watch tower climb for observation," reports Stephanie G.
Triathlon training: Park roads provide safe routes. At Lake Louisa State Park Campground, the winding roadways serve as excellent cycling routes away from traffic. "The winding roadways within the park offer great bicycling opportunities, making me pine for mine which sat idly in my garage back home. During our stay, they were holding a triathlon the weekend we were to leave, so we saw many training on the peaceful and mostly untraveled roads," writes Dave V.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Vegetation creates natural barriers. At Lake Louisa State Park Campground, the layout provides isolation between camping areas. "This stage park has lots to offer - great trails for hiking and biking, boat launches, fishing, or just relaxing. We stayed at site #43 which has water/elec. hookup, dump station near by. All of the sites seemed level, most are quite private with a fair amount of trees/foliage in between sites," explains Cyndi B.
Wildlife viewing: Expect varied species sightings. Lake Kissimmee State Park Campground offers numerous animal encounters. "We stayed middle of July for 4 days. Only saw 3 other campers the whole time. Park is super quiet and there is a ton of wildlife roaming. Dog friendly, they provide poop bags by the dumpsters," states Corey K.
Activities for children: Multiple options at various sites. Orlando/Kissimmee KOA provides numerous family-oriented facilities. "Very Friendly staff. Several activities possible for children eg pool, skating jumping etc. Late arrival possible. Good WiFi and laundry facilities and even a gym. Very close to Disney world and to restaurants or supermarkets," reports L B.
What you should know
Cell service: Limited in many park areas. Lake Kissimmee State Park Campground has minimal connectivity. "Cell service is practically non existent in the park and within 10 miles from the park. Keep an eye on gas, there's one place about 6 miles from the park and town is about 15 miles away," warns Corey K.
Campsite selection: Significant variation in quality. Thousand Trails Orlando offers varied site types across different sections. "They have many sections. A- Lots of pull throughs, B- Giant Field where the kids play, C-Not sure where this section is..., D- Jungle, Secluded, Private, also with snakes but a lot more shade, E/F/G- Normal RV Park in the grass, some shade in some parts," explains Laura H.
Weather considerations: Prepare for rain. During summer months, afternoon thunderstorms occur regularly. "This is a great location to get away from everything, without going far. It has nice, spread out spots, and plenty of activities if you are outdoorsy," notes Joe R. about Lake Louisa State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Consider primitive sites for adventure: 0.25 mile walk-in required. Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground offers various camping experiences. "Who doesn't love this place!!! From the second you get there it's an experience. From the bot ride to Magic Kingdom to all the great activities they have. All I can say is Rent a golf cart, it's worth it!!!" advises Kirsten J.
Check bathroom cleanliness: Varies widely between parks. Lake Louisa State Park maintains excellent facilities. "Extremely clean restrooms, great washing machine and dryer, clean place to wash dishes! wow! Definitely returning," shares Lauren W.
Research distance to attractions: Most within 30 minutes. From Kissimmee RV Park, "Only 30 or so minutes due north of this location, pet-friendly Kissimmee RV Park offers close proximity to and affordable overnight accommodations near all of the amusement parks (just 6.5 miles away) the Magical City has to offer," notes Stuart K.
Tips from RVers
Site access challenges: Tree clearance issues at some parks. At Lake Kissimmee State Park, "If you have a tall rv low hanging branches in the camp area might be an issue. Bath house is very clean and at night the lights are on timers," warns Corey K.
Navigation difficulties: Some parks lack clear directional signage. Kissimmee RV Park has confusing layout for some. "The hosts were great and very helpful. They are working on making the park better so we lost power once and water twice during our week stay. Lots of permanent campers. Those we talked to were very nice. Pool is big and nicely kept. Sites are close together but getting in and out is easy," explains Wade H.
Maintenance varies: Check recent reviews for current conditions. At Kissimmee RV Park, "If you're looking for a spot to park your 5th wheel or mobile RV campsite for the night and don't mind being shoulder to shoulder with likeminded RV campers, then the flatly paved surfaces of Kissimmee RV Park, complete with 193 campsites, might just be for you," advises Stuart K.
