Fort De Soto Campground spans 1,136 acres on five interconnected islands with seven miles of waterfront access. Located at the mouth of Tampa Bay, the campground sits at sea level with seasonal temperatures ranging from 50°F to 90°F. The campground features sites separated by natural vegetation for privacy, with both waterfront and inland camping options available throughout the year.
What to do
Fossil hunting excursions: Peace River Campground provides opportunities for visitors to find prehistoric shark teeth and other fossils. "I once had to abandon my Tilapia as the alligator appeared to want it more than me! Close attractions include the Solomon Castle, well worth visiting," notes one camper at Peace River Campground.
Kayaking through mangroves: E.G. Simmons Regional Park offers kayaking routes through protected mangrove canals. A visitor explains, "We were in site 55 of the East CG which was right on the water where we launched our kayaks to paddle the canals amongst the Mangroves. Great place to paddle a kayak in the Mangrove canals. Right on Tampa Bay."
Wildlife observation trails: Myakka River State Park features elevated walkways and observation areas. "Tons of great hiking and even some elevated bridges for site seeing. Tons of gators, birds, deer etc. There is also a scenic drive in the park, a 'fisherman's loop' and a few picnic areas," reports a camper at Palmetto Ridge Campground.
What campers like
Waterfront access: Camp Venice Retreat offers direct river access with convenient launch points. "We stayed at the tent sites and they are under a nice canopy of trees with water and electric. The nature trail was awesome to take our dog on walks down. It's located by snook haven so we got to still hear the music and walk over for drinks," shares a visitor at Camp Venice Retreat.
Well-separated sites: Sites at Fort De Soto Campground provide adequate space and natural barriers. "Many sites are waterfront and are mostly well separated. Great bike trails. Restrooms are dated but well maintained. Electric and water. 2 dump sites on property," notes a camper at Fort De Soto Campground.
Pet-friendly areas: Horseshoe Cove RV Resort accommodates visitors with dogs and includes dedicated pet facilities. "I live local and have been staying here in the pull through area a month until I transition to 100% travel trailer life. I have 2 50 lb+ dogs and there are many other people with dogs, plus a dog park," remarks one visitor.
What you should know
Reservation windows: Fort De Soto Park bookings open six months in advance with limited weekend availability. "They do start booking 6 months out and open up 10% of the sites for the weekend each friday at 7am if you want to try and get lucky," advises one camper.
Seasonal insect activity: Biting insects can be prevalent in coastal areas, particularly at dusk. "You really cannot stay outside at dusk. Citronella torches, spray, fans, Avon skin so soft...none of these work for the no see-ums," warns a visitor at E.G. Simmons Regional Park.
Wildlife interactions: Active alligator populations require appropriate caution near waterways. "Went to drain the tanks yesterday morning and a large sounding gator started to growl territorially at me. So heads up with your pets please," cautions a Myakka River State Park camper.
Tips for camping with families
Playground facilities: Terry Tomalin Campground offers newly renovated spaces with family amenities. "The campsites are nicely spaced out so you aren't too close to other campers. The trails are amazing but be careful or you might get lost," mentions a visitor at Terry Tomalin Campground.
Educational opportunities: Fort De Soto Park features historical sites alongside natural areas. "Great park with days worth of activities! The historic fort, scenic beaches, trails for hiking or biking, etc. made for a great visit! Tons of wildlife - we saw raccoons, dolphin, manatee, tons of birds!"
Recreation options: Pools and organized activities provide alternative entertainment. "The park maintains several activities like bingo in the evenings. Close to grocery stores if you need something and the nearest town is cute," shares a Peace River Campground visitor.
Tips from RVers
Site selections: Palmetto Ridge at Myakka River State Park offers paved RV sites with full hookups. "I'm staying in the Palmetto Ridge loop which is the only paved loop and I think the only one with sewer. The Palmetto Ridge pull thrus are gigantic. I would say the vegetation gives semi privacy but they aren't on top of each other," details an RVer.
Electrical connections: E.G. Simmons Park provides 30-amp service at waterfront sites. "Paved roads, packed sand and grass sites, 30A and water at each site, two separate campgrounds each with a dump station and bath house. First come (no reservations) with 14 day stay limit."
Maintenance facilities: Horseshoe Cove RV Resort offers excellent support services for equipment issues. "Park is very well kept, beautiful gym, pool, hot tub, and private island on backside to fish and other games like horseshoes. Maintenance is AMAZING! I will be staying here again for short and extended periods," notes a visitor at Horseshoe Cove RV Resort.
