Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park offers camping opportunities across 2,000 acres of rolling sandhills, ravines, and lakes. Located at 300 feet above sea level, this area has drier terrain than surrounding lowlands, with temperatures typically 5-10°F warmer in winter than coastal Florida regions. The park contains one of Florida's few remaining examples of old-growth longleaf pine forests, with several rare plant species found throughout the ravine system.

Explore wildlife habitats: Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park offers opportunities to spot larger wildlife. "This park has 8 trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. We were able to see wild horses, bisons, snakes and gators. Great for fishing and kayaking," shares Brenda S.
Fishing in nearby waters: Rodman Reservoir provides excellent fishing opportunities. "The campground is immersed in the beauty of the Ocala National Forest, offering a tranquil environment for relaxation and exploration. Its proximity to the Ocklawaha River and Rodman Reservoir allows campers to enjoy a variety of activities such as fishing, boating, kayaking, and wildlife viewing," explains Jeff E.
What Campers Like
Shaded campsites: Many campsites near Keystone Heights offer ample tree coverage. "Good size campsites with fire ring, picnic table, water and electricity. Our camp site was partially shaded," reports Gina E. about her experience at Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park.
Dark skies for stargazing: The rural setting provides excellent night sky viewing. "Great location with plenty of dark skies. The spots are well spaced in the woods, with plenty of room," notes Joe R. about camping at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park.
Multiple accommodation options: From tents to cabins, the area offers various camping styles. "We have stayed here many times. In cabins or in tent. We like to hike which there is plenty of. Canoe which they rent. Firewood is available," shares Jenn B.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Early morning hours provide the best wildlife spotting chances. "Very woodsy, plenty of walking trails, even a spring to take a dip in, if you dare!!" suggests Kim M.

Bathroom facilities vary: Not all campgrounds have full shower facilities. "The bathhouse was clean and well kept," notes Gina E. about her family's experience with pet friendly camping near Keystone Heights, Florida.

Local history presence: Rodman Campground offers unique historical context. "Camp staff knows much about the Native American heritage in this location," mentions Chad P.
Tips for Camping with Families
Swimming options: Several parks offer designated swimming areas appropriate for children. "Families first camping trip," notes Mason B. about their stay at Gold Head Branch, while another camper mentions the "swimming area" as a highlight.
Playground access: Some campgrounds include playground facilities. "Great Family Fun. We went camping with the family and dog," shares Gina E. about their experience with pet friendly camping at Keystone Heights.
Educational opportunities: Camp Blanding RV Park offers family-oriented educational experiences. "We camped here before things warmed up, but we enjoyed it. The children loved the close proximity of the lake. We were approximately 10 feet away from the water. The area had two sets of swings nearby and a dock," describes Sean B.
Multiple activity options: Families appreciate campgrounds with diverse recreation choices. "We camped here in the fall and the kids had a great time. Our site was right on the lake so the kids had a great time playing in the water for something to do. We could hang our hammocks and the paved roads allowed for the kids to ride their bikes. It was peaceful and we would go again!" says Jenn B.
Tips from RVers
Site spacing and privacy: Starke-Gainesville NE KOA offers well-spaced sites. "Just left STARK FLORIDA KOA. No shade but a huge amount of space between sites and set up on an angle which increased the sense of space. Sites had full hook up, elec, water, sewer," notes Susan R.
Hookup availability: Check what utilities are available at each site. "Big sites. Would have given 5 stars if internet was decent but it was awful. Our rig is 42' w/ 4 slides and had lots of space. Escorted to our site. Nice picnic tables," shares Douglas T.
Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience noise from nearby recreational areas. "IF there is an 'ALL HOURS WEEKEND' at the nearby Hog Waller Campground and ATV Resort (right across the river), then the trails remain open 24 hours and you will not have any tranquility or relaxation all night," warns Jeff E.
Site selection tips: Choose sites away from main roads for a quieter experience. "Very quiet. The tent sites were very large, adequately spaced with varying degrees of privacy," reports Justin W. about his experience camping with pets near Keystone Heights.
