Silver Springs State Park Campground's dedicated pet areas welcome leashed dogs throughout the main camping loops, with 24-hour access to walking trails. Ocala North RV Park maintains a well-cared-for dog park that receives regular praise from visitors who note the park is "very pet friendly" with ample space for dogs to run off-leash. Both campgrounds accommodate tent, RV, and cabin campers with pets, though specific pet policies vary by accommodation type. Grand Lake RV & Golf Resort features two separate dog park zones for different sized dogs, while Sportsman's Cove Resort allows pets throughout their lakeside property. Most campgrounds in the Citra area enforce standard leash requirements outside designated off-leash areas and request campers clean up after their pets.

The natural surroundings near these pet-friendly campgrounds provide excellent opportunities for dog walking and exploration. Orange Lake offers water access for dogs that enjoy swimming, with Sportsman's Cove Resort providing direct lake access. Several campgrounds feature wooded perimeters with walking paths ideal for daily pet exercise. Visitors with pets should note that caterpillars falling from trees at certain times of year can be an issue, requiring campers to sweep RV slides before bringing pets inside. Local veterinary services can be found within 20-30 minutes of most Citra campgrounds, with the closest full-service options located in either Gainesville to the north or Ocala to the south. Most campgrounds accommodate standard pet supplies, though specialized food or medication should be brought from home.

      Eleanor Oaks RV Park

      Rv park, BUT not….

FHU, unleveled concrete pad with a picnic table. So close to the FT resident in the tiny home next to us, that we could not sit outside comfortably. Also, our area was right by her sewage hook up. And then there was a storage shed, leaf piles, random stacks of supplies, and a residential trailer behind us. The Pool was small but clean, we didn’t use. Dog park was ok, but other people don’t pick up after their pets, even with signs, and available poop disposal can. Maybe if management put mutt-mitts out, pet owners might use them. We booked months ago, and we arrived a bit after 5 due to traffic, there was no welcome packet, and no one answered the phone, with the posted #. Thankfully, the maintenance guy was friendly and helped us find our spot. It wasn’t easy to get to, or to see where it was. It was way too small to accommodate our 5th wheel and Dooley. If someone had been in the spot in front of us, we wouldn’t have been able to get in. The map online doesn’t even have our site listed. We were visiting family, so thankfully we weren’t there much. The area has lots of good restaurants, attractions, fishing, and springs! I do not leave 3 star reviews, but my honest review is to help others from paying $400 a week, at this park. I was hard pressed to leave a 3 star…. But Because of the area attractions, FHU, and helpful maintenance employee, was the reason I did. I would not reserve here again. Especially at the high price.

      Grand Lake

      Another great experience!

We wereet at the entrance by a gentleman in a golf cart. He brought us directly to our site, and helped us get squared away. He recommended the local restaurant for dinner. Not a lot of options, but all the options were good!

Great dog park, 2 separate zones!!!

This is a golf/ lake community that is like the old TV shows. People walking dogs, riding golf carts, and meeting at the club house. We will return when we have more time to stay!

      Wildwood KOA

      Awesome Campground for Overnight Stay

Stayed here one night while returning from the FL Keys.  Awesome place to overnight. Spacious pull through sites.  They have a small fenced dog park which was great to let the dogs stretch their legs after traveling all day.  The campground has plenty of space to walk the dogs.

Staff was great because we called during the days while traveling north and had a site waiting when we arrived after hours.

The only downside is that it is right behind a Pilot Travel center so there is noise from parked tractor trailers but I still slept fine.

      Ocala North RV Park

      Enjoyable

I have stayed here a few times. Very enjoyable and I always look forward to coming back. It's going through some renovations. New owners have paved all the spaces, the shower house has been redone, they are digging a beautiful pond in front. They have a little dog park, walking trails, off property is a nice bike ride, huge swimming pool, activities, laundry room and friendly people. At night the stars are amazing. Close to 1-75 and reasonable rates. This is a good place to stay.

      Mill Dam Lake Resort

      Mill Dam campground PARKING LOT

75 women campers rented the parking lot at Mill Dam used for large group camping. I believe it was $100 a night. Currently a 'burn ban' on fires but they are otherwise allowed. Most of us have dogs and cats, but must check you and you pets for ticks, they are prevalent. There is a lake with a beauriful beach. There are restrooms and changing rooms with floor drains, so if you bring your own shower you can use that. There are no power hookups or dump stations that I saw, but there are dumpsters. There is a resident black bear so MUST observe bear safety. Great place, very nice camp host, kept bathrooms clean and stocked.

      Encore Southern Palms

      Mega Resort for RV Lifers

This place is gargantuan and has so many roads and alleyways that I got lost navigating the place at least a couple of times. And just when I thought that I seen all of Southern Palms RV Resort, upon exiting the place, I realized that there was even more of Southern Palms right across the street where the expansive RV parking lot continued.

Located on the outskirts of Eustis here in the Sunshine State, this place has just about everything you could be looking for – from parks, shuffle boards, evening themed dancing and lakes to bike paths, swimming pools and bocce ball. But wait, there’s more… there’s also: clubhouse/ lounge for large group gatherings, whirlpool / spa / jacuzzi for those late night relaxing moments, fitness center to get your workout in, showers / restrooms that are just decent, ballroom for those evening dance parties, WiFi that is pretty superb, basic and expanded TV cable packages, picnic tables galore, BBQ grilles as far as the eye can see, the whole place is pet friendly, a horseshoe pit (where Joey is the local hero), mail center, game room complete with billiards table, a dog park that is always jam packed with man’s best friend as well as a laundr-O-mat (bring your quarters!) an extensive library (without its own Dewey decimal system) … and the list goes on, but I will end here.

Downside to this place is that, well, it’s a mega mall of RV’s, campers and semi-permanent, yet mobile housing solutions, and there’s a lot more people and accommodations than there is really space for, so it is quite overcrowded and you will definitely hear your neighbors at all times of the day, in addition to all of the scootering traffic going by your ‘campsite’ whether day or night. So if you are simply looking for a place to stay for the night enroute to somewhere else, this is not a bad place, but given the overpopulation and the fact that every single amenity offered, while great for some, makes me feel like I just left home to go somewhere else where they have everything that I just left at home.

Insider’s tips? Here’s a few… First, if you are looking for a great meal and something out of the ordinary, head on over to The Dam Smoker and you will discover some pretty outrageous BBQ, which you can order and eat there (or order by the pound and go find a nice lakeside bench to enjoy) albeit in some very modest settings. Second, if you’d like to escape your asphalt slab for a nice slice of nature, then head over to Long Leaf Pine Trail, which has a decent hike, or check out the wildlife at Hidden Waters Preserve, both of which are near Lake Joanna.

      Happy Camping!

    Guide to Citra

Campgrounds near Citra, Florida showcase the natural wetlands and springs ecosystem of north-central Florida. The area sits at elevations between 70-90 feet above sea level with a subtropical climate that brings humid summers and mild winters. Seasonal flooding occurs in low-lying areas near Orange Lake and Rodman Reservoir, particularly during the summer rainy season when afternoon thunderstorms are common.

    What to do

Kayaking springs and waterways: Salt Springs Recreation Area offers both kayak rentals and natural springs access within the Ocala National Forest. "The spring is a short walk from the campground or a quick bike ride," notes Miranda R., who found the experience "Beautiful & Relaxing."

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park provides observation platforms for spotting diverse wildlife. "Many opportunities to spot wildlife close by... Buffalo, deer, eagles, alligators, owls," shares Jenn B., who recommends visitors "Visit Sweetwater" for optimal viewing.

Fishing in multiple waterways: Rodman Campground connects directly to Rodman Reservoir with boat launch facilities. Justin W. noted that "The boat ramp is well kept and there is ample trailer parking nearby," making it convenient for anglers to access prime fishing spots.

Trail hiking through varied ecosystems: The Florida National Scenic Trail runs adjacent to Rodman Campground with 5.1 miles of accessible trails. Charlie M. describes it as "a scenic setting for a campground," where he enjoyed "bookending a memorable trip" with overnight stays before and after backpacking.

    What campers like

Spacious, well-maintained sites: Silver Springs State Park Campground receives consistent praise for site quality. "The sites are big and have plenty of space between them," notes Carlos R., adding that it has "that old Florida feel." Jody O. confirms this assessment: "Large sites with ample separation from your neighbors."

Clean facilities with reliable amenities: Ocala North RV Park maintains excellent standards for their facilities. "The park is very clean and well cared for. Staff is very attentive," according to a camper identified simply as "Name," who specifically highlighted the "Great pool and fitness center."

Access to water recreation: Ocklawaha Canoe Outpost & Resort offers direct river access with multiple water activity options. Kate M. describes it as "a friendly campground with canoe/kayak rentals and a shuttle service" where "the tent area is near the river and very wooded--lots of places to hang a hammock or pitch a tent."

Authentic Florida natural settings: Many campgrounds preserve natural habitats. Sportsman's Cove Resort sits directly on a lake that one camper described as "natural and undisturbed," while another called it "a perfect place to enjoy fishing, wildlife and the Florida Birding Trail."

    What you should know

Seasonal insect considerations: Several campgrounds report seasonal challenges with insects. A tent camper at Citra Royal Palm RV Park noted: "Caterpillars were falling from the tree not that the owners could do anything about that but we had to sweep the slides off so we didn't have any in our RV!"

Noise factors at certain campgrounds: Rodman Campground can experience noise from nearby recreational facilities. Jeff E. warns about "Hog Waller Campground and ATV Resort (right across the river)" where "there was loud music, dirt bikes, ATVs and 4-Wheelers screaming through the entire night" during special events.

Varying cellular connectivity: Connectivity varies significantly between campgrounds. At Sportsman's Cove Resort, Rebecca H. reports "Terrible phone service," while at Ocala North RV Park, John found adequate signals, noting: "They have an amazing campground WiFi deployment. I was getting about 15mbs down and 6mbs up."

Bathroom access distances: At some sites, facilities may be distant from certain campsites. Jeff E. observed at Rodman Campground that "Bathrooms were clean (with hot showers) but were a bit of a hike if you camp riverfront."

    Tips for camping with families

Boat tours for all ages: Silver Springs State Park offers glass-bottom boat experiences suitable for children. Carlos R. shares: "We have a 4 year old and a 10 year old and they both really enjoyed the boat tour also."

Educational ranger programs: Several parks offer guided experiences. Lindsey H. at Paynes Prairie Preserve recounts: "We did the Ranger led hike which was really nice, my 5 year old struggled to keep up with the Ranger and there are decent elevation changes."

Kid-friendly amenities: Look for campgrounds with dedicated recreation areas. Stephanie observed at Grand Lake: "The Rec center was utilized almost every day with my two younger children. Everyone there seems to be long term/permanent guests and all is very friendly and welcoming."

Swimming opportunities: Natural springs maintain constant temperatures year-round. As Stuart K. notes about Salt Springs: "Like most natural springs, as the day progresses, the spring will get busier and busier" and recommends "that you chose to go either early or later in the day" since "the water's temperature doesn't change remaining constant at 72 degrees throughout the day."

    Tips from RVers

Site levelness considerations: Some RV sites require additional leveling. At Ocala North RV Park, Sue G. observed that "Sites have paved pads but most are not level" despite the campground being "nice enough."

Shared electrical hookups: At certain campgrounds, power connections may be shared between sites. One RVer at Citra Royal Palm RV Park reported: "We shared power with the guy next to us and the breaker blew. Not too happy with that!"

Dog-friendly facilities: Grand Lake RV & Golf Resort provides separated dog park areas. Clayton D. was impressed with the "Great dog park, 2 separate zones!!!" Most dog friendly campgrounds near Citra offer designated pet exercise areas, with Grand Lake offering dedicated spaces for different sized dogs.

Local service access: Most campgrounds sit between population centers. T S. notes about Grand Lake RV & Golf Resort: "Have to drive 20 to 30 minutes North or South to get to a grocery store," which affects planning for longer stays.
