Best RV Parks & Resorts near West Simsbury, CT

RV parks in proximity to West Simsbury offer diverse options for motorhome travelers. Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park in Granville accommodates big rigs with 50-amp electrical hookups, water connections, and sewer services, remaining open from May through Columbus Day. Lake Compounce Campground in Bristol provides spacious sites for RVs with electric and water hookups but lacks sewer connections at individual sites. Austin Hawes Memorial Campground in Pleasant Valley features tent and RV sites with electrical service, running from May through September. Between these destinations, sites vary significantly in size and privacy levels. "This place isn't a campground, it's a parking lot for RVs. They made the roads so narrow to squeeze in so many sites, it's almost impossible to navigate an RV through, even for experienced RVers."

Full hookup RV sites require advance reservations during peak seasons, particularly fall foliage months when availability becomes limited. Dump stations are available at most parks, with Lake Compounce offering a sanitary dump station for RVs without sewer hookups. Pets are welcome at all major RV parks in the region, though some restrict certain breeds or impose leash requirements. Cell service varies by location, with mountainous areas experiencing reduced coverage. Winter camping options are limited, as most facilities close by late October or early November. Based on reviews from The Dyrt, some RV sites suffer from poor leveling conditions, with one camper noting: "Sites were large enough for RV. NO privacy, but tent sites were ok."

    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

    Black Rock State Park Campground

    A nice family friendly campground

This is a nice family friendly campground that makes for easy trips. There are a variety of sites available, from open field sites to more wooded and private areas. The campground also has a lake for swimming, trails for hiking, and some nice quiet areas for fishing. Well maintained bathrooms, with available showers, are also spread throughout the grounds. Not pet friendly unfortunately.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Aces High RV Park

    Peaceful

Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it. It was a quiet area with ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting. It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking. We enjoyed the shade trees on our site (#3) and noticed many sites had similar trees, but the owner keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site. There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far. Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back!

    Wells State Park Campground

    Rustic but not for RVs

Chose this spot to give us a rest on a trip to Canada (and again to go back to Maine to complete the vacation after we had truck trouble). Chose a pull-through to save time and effort. The first time we chose site 1 (pull through). This past weekend we chose site 38 (pull through).

A few weeks ago when we visited, site 1 was close to the entry gate, but was very confusing as a pull through. I just backed the trailer in. The next morning we saw that the "pull through" had not been maintained in several seasons. Tree limbs and brush intruded on the driveway. There was no way to get a truck and trailer through that without damage.

Yesterday we tried site 38. We had to take the camp road around the entire park, then enter the "loop" section. Even the "main" roads required my wife to watch as I cleared tree trunks; it was difficult to snake our little trailer around the bends. The driveway to site 38 was a mess. Tree limbs and brush invaded the drive, and there was nowhere level on the whole site. I used a record 9 blocks to get 4 levels high on the downhill wheel. When leaving we had to go out through the adjoining site, because there was no way we'd be able to make the turn out of the site onto the 10' wide tote road because of the trees.

A surcharge which makes it $50/night for non-MA residents, plus, no dump station on site and $7 for four pieces of firewood (go to the Walmart 2 miles away instead) will have us skip this place in the future, even if it's in a convenient place.

For those looking to vacation here. There was minimal cell phone coverage with Verizon. I could check messages but wouldn't try to stream. The highway is very loud (I-90 is across the lake). There are a lot of boggy areas and swamps which, although pretty, grew a lot of mosquitoes that kept my wife indoors. A lot of sites were fairly large and private. The beach area is close to the lower sites. Bathrooms and showers were tight and needed updating, but cleaned.

    Highland Campground

    Older but lots to do

The campground is older, and the roads/driveways need work. For those looking for newer facilities, this isn't the place. There are no 50 amp sites. The rec hall and the bath houses are old, but we don't mind the old fashioned spots at times. Reminds me of camping as a kid. There are a lot of activities for the kids and adults. Shuffleboard, bocci ball, fishing, bingo, playground, pit luck dinners, etc. There is wifi available.

There are a lot of seasonal campers which can sometimes feel like you're intruding on their space. There is a page of rules to follow, the seasonals ignore them.

There is no black water hookup, only gray water. You have to have them clean out the black or dump on the way out.

Guide to West Simsbury

RV campgrounds near West Simsbury, Connecticut, are situated in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains with elevations ranging from 300-500 feet above sea level. The region experiences four distinct seasons with summer highs averaging in the 80s and winter lows reaching the teens. Most campgrounds in the area have mature tree cover providing natural shade during summer camping months.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Lake Taghkanic State Park Campground offers a serene setting for anglers just over an hour from West Simsbury. "The lake is beautiful and clean. Expect to pay $15 fee (I think) to use your paddleboards / kyacks etc. Worth every penny," notes Mellisa T. The park maintains a catch and release policy in designated areas.

Stargazing sessions: Clear nights in the region provide excellent viewing conditions due to minimal light pollution. "Late night, stargazing over the lake is a great pastime, because the water is calm and the light pollution is low," shares Seth K. from Lake Taghkanic State Park Campground.

Swimming access: During summer months, water temperatures typically reach the mid-70s. "Best swimming experience ever," writes Lizz H. about Lake Taghkanic State Park Campground. Multiple campgrounds maintain designated swimming areas with varying depths suitable for different age groups.

What campers like

Elevated camping platforms: These wood platforms keep tents dry during wet conditions. At Rudd Pond Area — Taconic State Park, "Almost all of the sites have platforms to pitch your tent on, although there are a couple of flatter spots without platforms," explains Katherine P. These elevated sites help with drainage during rainy conditions.

Clean bathroom facilities: Visitors consistently mention bathroom cleanliness as a priority. "Showers are hot and there's great water pressure. The cleanliness of the bathrooms depends on how busy the campground is," notes Perrin M. about Lake Taghkanic facilities.

Private tent areas: While many RV sites lack privacy, tent sites often provide more seclusion. At Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park, "Grounds were absolutely beautiful and very well maintained! Pool was lovely and refreshing," reports Megin F. Sites near water features tend to fill first during peak season.

What you should know

Cell reception limitations: Coverage varies significantly by carrier and topography. At Thousand Trails Sturbridge, "Cell reception is not great. Camp link Wifi for a fee is workable unless you need to do zoom calls," cautions Mara S. Mountainous areas experience the most limited coverage.

Site privacy considerations: Many reviews mention proximity between camping spots. "The sites were a little close together, but being able to fish and catching 2 decent-sized largemouth bass made everything all ok!!" writes Rosie R. about Rudd Pond Area.

Water access varies: Not all waterfront sites offer direct water access. "The sites on the water looked nice- hoping to try for that next time!" shares Stephanie about Prospect Mountain Campground, indicating limited availability of premium water-adjacent sites.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds feature play equipment for children. At Aces High RV Park, "It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court," according to April L.

Family-friendly activities: Scheduled events cater to children during peak season. "Prospects mountain is a great campground for families with younger kids. They have activities every weekend such as dances, bingo, hayrides," Sandra S. explains about Prospect Mountain Campground.

Dog-friendly areas: Many campgrounds welcome pets with designated exercise areas. "There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it!" notes April L. about Aces High RV Park. Specific breed restrictions may apply at certain facilities.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling conditions: Some RV sites require significant leveling equipment. At Lake Compounce Campground, "Sites were large enough for RV. The sites were long so even though you face your neighbor, the sites were long enough that our door wasn't directly across from our neighbor," explains Tina.

RV site utilities: Electric service varies significantly between locations. "Utility hookups were in great condition and everything worked as it should (other parks should come and take a look at how to do this right)," reports Matt S. about Aces High RV Park.

Dump station availability: Most rv campgrounds near West Simsbury, Connecticut, provide dump stations rather than full sewer hookups. "Does not have sewer hookups, but does have a dump station," notes Ray B. about Lake Compounce Campground, which provides essential information for trip planning.
